Although not as widely known in the US, Shirley is considered a living ICON in the UK and throughout Europe. With over 135 million records sold, Bassey was inducted into the Guinness Book of World records in 2000 for being the largest selling female artist from the United Kingdom. Shirley is the only artist who has recorded more than one James Bond Theme Song (Goldfinger, Diamonds Are Forever, and Moonraker). She started back in 1953 as a 16 year old. As she was a minor, her mother had to approve her first contract as a Chorus Girl. As soon as managers discovered she could sing, she eventually gave up her dancing shoes and be up front as the main singer. Also, the really tough upbringing she had as the only black child in the small Welsh town she grew up in. Poor family. No encouragement at school, even though her voice was clearly something special back then. She left at 14 and pretty much actually pulled herself up by her bootstraps, because through sheer talent and charisma she went from literal rags to riches.

Since it was a long time since I followed her career, Wikipedia shows that she is now 86 and lists the many honors she has accumulated. But as for Angelina, one of her favorite Bond themes is Diamonds Are Forever, which Shirley did (1971).

Shirley was a Welsh woman, the Welsh are known for their singing. Her vocals and pretty face propelled her to stardom. But, also a Welshman, Tom Jones happened to be around the same time as lovely shirley. He lived in a poor coal mining town. If you hear Tom Joneses versiom of , I who have nothing, or I'll never fall in love again. Tom jones sings these songs with so much more emmotion. I'm not distracting from lovely shirley bassey, but compare the feelings and emotion that these artists put into our lives.
