He wrote this song when he was a teen; it is about the fact that his Mother left him and his father when he was just a young boy; he grew up without his Mother and it broke his heart. “Wishing for the arms of Mater (Mother). I think that’s why he sings so soulfully. ❤️

Music is the closest thing we have to a time machine. Certain songs can evoke strong memories and a sense of place as you recall where you first heard it. Decades later, this song is still the gold standard of expressing a vibe that is both sentimental and bittersweet.

I loved Simply Red. He’s so good. It’s a sad song about his mother abandoning him and his family when he was very young. He was holding out hope she’d come back but she never did. Sung so soulfully. Good reaction. The trumpet has a “mute” on it. So cool.

This original version wasn't the version they used in Love & Basketball tho. Angie Stone sung a cover of it for the movie! Her cover has a different feel from the original. Her version wraps you in warmth while that late 90's neo-soul comforts you. Mick's original has a more vocally powerful, contemplative, jazzy soul feel. kzbin.info/www/bejne/rnLSiqNqgJZmiM0

This song came on the car stereo as I was going to scatter my fathers ashes up on the Mendocino coast. Red's voice stopped me cold and all of my grit of holding it together, caught up with me big time and all at once. Hadn't cried before or since that day in 89'. I just wish my father could have heard this song. He and all three of us kids played music because of his influences of many musical genres. R.I.P Russel Edgar Pardee.

There's such a richness and deep soul to it . I can listen to it again and again and it never, ever ceases to induce feelings of joy. Most amazingly,he wrote it when just 17. I was a relatively young man when I first encountered it. Didn't particularly like it. Over the years,my tastes have matured. I've seen him perform this song live when he was 60. And. His voice is still as dynamic and soulful as ever. Absolutely brilliant.

It was first released by Harold Melvin and the Bluenotes in September 1972. I love both versions.

Oops! Wrong Simply Red song. I was thinking of If You Don’t Know Me By Now. (For some reason I couldn’t just delete my comment)

Ur so right @Asia RIGHT in the feels…@Bj did u say they played this song in ur house? I’ll never forget my dad forcin me to listen “to what real music is”, & of course me being an angry tween said “dad ur music is bad” & he played not this one but another Simply Red song if u don’t know me…I think that’s the title & I vividly remember as it played I couldn’t find words to describe it…one of the first times I remember hearin lyrics like I was front row @ a concert….his voice is….just different & the word popping into my head as I nod along w/ u guys is “AUTHENTIC”..thanks for some good memories

Heard this on the radio last night for the first time in sooo many years. Forgot about this tune and how soft and beautiful it is. Goosebumps! Had no idea who sang this until I looked it up just now. Had to go looking for reactions today! Not surprised you two love this! :-)

Getting older now, but when I listen to these from days gone I get such a nostalgic feeling. Glad to see another generation enjoying the music and sharing it.
