If you've never heard this lady sing, this performance would have opened your eyes. And the best part is there's a whole lot more to see and appreciate. 'You Raise Me up' and 'Everyone', both from the Immortal Songs show, are truly epic performances that will blow you away. We all wonder if So Hyang is human or from another planet. Current odds are that she’s from another planet, with an outside chance she’s actually an angel come down from Heaven. 😇 We have never heard anyone sing like her, or be able to hold an audience in the palm of her hand until she lets them go. Her voice is, as one person described it, like liquid gold. Perfection in clarity and pitch, and she doesn’t fade in the upper octaves, which is startling when you hear her hit those 5th and 6th octave notes with such _POWER_ it actually gives everyone goose bumps-and makes us bald guys’ hair stand on end! As she says, her voice “is from God.” She does all the musical arrangements herself (with the input of her musical assistants), teaches vocal technique at a South Korean university and speaks four languages. Korean, English, French and Vietnamese. Let me catch my breath. OK. She is a cancer survivor from uterine cancer at the age of 20, just after getting married, and states very plainly that God saved her life due to the prayers of her church. But this left her without the ability to have children so she decided to dedicate her life to being a Contemporary Christian Gospel singer and has refused recording contracts from the biggest corporations in the world. She only wants to sing for charities, churches and while doing missionary work, to strengthen those suffering through difficult times. David Foster, Josh Groban, Michael Bolton and others have all travelled to Asia to work with her. She contracted hepatitis B from a blood transfusion during her cancer surgery and it clings to her to this day. My fave singer. Best technical singer I have ever seen. Her belting technique is unmatched. "Arirang alone" is a good next song with violins. "Everyone" is a technical masterpiece with lots of upper register that makes you wonder how she doesn't tire out. "Lean on me" is her just showing off with a killer arrangement. Michael Bolton was in the audience and liked her so much he invited het to perform with him in concert in Korea. Sony had reached out to her and offered her a contract..... and she tolld them no. So Hyang is one of the greatest female singers on the planet today, based on the critique/opinion of knowledgeable, experienced vocal teachers like Roberto Delli Carri (master teacher of vocal coaches), John Henny (John Henny Vocal Studio and music publisher), Elizabeth Zharoff (Charismatic Voice), Recao Imediata, and many others. She is the queen of the mixed voice, vowel modification, belting, etc. She is virtually flawless technically while singing with emotion based on her gospel/Christian background and desire to comfort others (Todd Sauve in the comments below always has a great summary). Michael Bolton called her performance of "Lean on Me" a "virtuoso" and offered her to tour with him- which she delclined since it was inconsistent with her beliefs that singing is not to make money or fame, but to sing for God and to comfort others She also has a "Star" rating along with Whitney, Mariah, and Celine. Each of her performances are mini-masterpieces. She is a humble person. It's such a satisfying experience to see a knowledgeable pro react to Sohyang's singing. This "Bridge Over Troubled Water" introduced me to Sohyang as well, and her voice has forever enslaved my heart. Kudos for taking notes of the clarity, tone and control of her voice right away. Typically by the end of the first verse when Sohyang gave us the decrescendo, vocal insiders know they are in for a treat. When Sohyang turned up her power and went to her chest-mixed belts, one knew they were watching a legend in the making. I think Sohyang gave this performance when she was 36, and one could argue that she's been getting even better since. Many already gave you a long list of performances to watch, so I would resist my impulse to add my personal choices. However, you choose, you cannot go wrong with Sohyang's stage. Yup! As soon as you hear So Hyang start to sing you know you have tapped into something you have never heard before! People looking for their jaws on the floor is probably the most common after effect, followed closely by tears (from us guys, too!) and then just plain blank, dumb stares. Then you have to hear the song again and again and again ... finally after all of this your brain starts working once more and you begin processing what you have just heard. It happens every time with everyone. This tiny South Korean Gospel singer is by far the greatest unknown singer in the world today, and has been for more than a decade now! Schnell :-)) You have just been introduced to our Marvelous little Korean Gospel Singer SoHyang! What do you think? Of coarse she does more then Gospel but Praising God is her Favourite thing to do! She sings to lift the Spirits those of us that suffer in anyway! She made that promise to God when her life was spared from cancer! Gospel , Rock, Jazz,Soul, Show Tunes,She does the voice in the Disney Korean version of Moana! Has sung with Josh Groben, Micheal Bolton and joined David Foster for concerts, and turned down Sony Music and two other big management companies! Happy to have her, Father-in-law manager her still ! Great reaction, Schnell. My first reaction to So Hyang was her "Arirang Alone" and I would highly recommend you add that to the top of your list. She is AMAZING! One of the best female singers on the planet. And she has a heart of gold. She sings with such emotion and power. I would also recommend "Everyone", "Lean On Me" and she has (IMHO) the best cover of Whitney Houston's "I Have Nothing." I loved seeing your jaw drop and the goosebumps hit. Many people recommend these big production performances (Everyone, Lean on Me, You Raise Me Up, Arirang, I Have Nothing, etc.) but she may be more impressive just sitting outdoors on a folding chair and singing with minimal accompaniment as she did in last year's Begin Again concerts ("I Will Always Love You", "If I Ain't Got You", "I'll Be There", "I Won't Give Up", "Misty" etc. plus many emotional Korean songs including here own "Stay"). It's also fun to hear her rap ("Day Day").

Nice reaction. Sohyang is gospel singer who's great faith (and church experience) infuses her work with emotion and establishes a powerful connection with her audience. She was in her late 30s when she did this performance and now in her 40s has become even more comfortable and confident in all the things she can do with her voice. You wouldn't believe it, but in her early 20s she was a bit of a gospel screamer as she fired away at high Cs. Over the two decades since, she has added, still adds, technical proficiency, emotional intensity, and charisma to her live music. Her mixed voice up to a B5 is now totally at her command and she can put power into her head voice a few half tones higher. Her lower registers are relatively weak but she makes up for it with resonance and tonal color. For a peek at her versatility, react to Everyone and Lean On Me from Immortal Songs 2, and I Will Always Love You, Misty, and Day Day from Begin Again Korea. We are lucky that she speaks English with so little accent. It opens up our music to Sohyang and, I'm certain, is the reason we have been introduced to her. That said, Korean is a great language for song, and I have come to enjoy her Korean work the most. Check out Arirang Alone from Immortal Songs 2, Hug Me, Home, or Dear Love from King of Masked Singers, or Love Poem or Please from Begin Again Korea.

For those who love Dimash and Sohyang, another must see singer is Zhao Shen from China. Because of his small stature, feminine disposition and voice, he was often bullied in school. Never thinking that he had what it takes to be a singer, he went tot he Ukraine to become a dentist. While there, he was convinced that he did have a great singing ability, thus transferred his major to music. Thank goodness he did. As an introduction into Zhao "Charlie" Shen, begin with his premiere performance on the Voice of China singing HuanYan. After this first video, move on to his versions of "Memory", and "Time to Say Goodbye". For something different from him, watch his version of "Let It Go" and "Monsters". Last, but definitely not least (there is so much more from him), enjoy the videos, "This is Me" and a very unique and fun song (one of my favs) "Da La Beng Ba". His biggest success is the song "Big Fish".

Many fans of Sohyang love the songs performed in Begin Again. Truly those were masterpieces as like all her other performances. Imho, the songs that you ought to react to are songs from Immortal Song 2 and King Of Mask Singer. Songs from Immortal Song 2 are mind blowing because her cover songs are re-interpreted and they came out quite different from the original. They are just made into EPIC songs like what you experience in this video. Most of her cover songs in this competition are in English except for the iconic Arirang Alone. For me, Sohyang performances in King of Mask Singer were the best. All the performances were Korean cover songs and she covered many genre including rock and rap. Please Google "vimeo Sohyang Immortal Song with Eng sub" and you should see a list. Esp for KOMS, do not use KZbin to react as many are just teaser. For Begin Again, her performances were wonderful except that you might not get as much chills and goosebumps as the two competitions above. My other favourite songs are Fate, Saldaga and It's Only My World from another competition.
