Greetings retro reactions. I was 22 yrs old in 1977 living in west LosAngeles, Venice & Santa Monica California. It was a very magical time StealyDan has always gone way pass above & beyond perfection. There are too many to name of the magnificent music of the 70’s So happy to have been there with the ear/orgasm & ear/candy

Jazzed up rock... nobody did it better. A significant part of the soundtrack of the 70s. "Do it Again" another classic.

It's amazing that there was so much great music in October 1978 that this gem reached only #26 on the Billboard Hot 100. Placing even higher that week were some other amazing songs like the Rolling Stones' "Beast of Burden," Billy Joel's "She's Always a Woman," Gerry Rafferty's "Right Down the Line," Bob Seger and the Silver Bullet Band's "Hollywood Nights," Olivia Newton John's "Hopelessly Devoted to You," and Exile's "Kiss You All Over."

Agree 100% not a bad track. The track that got the least radio play, "I Got the News", is my favorite. All of them are stellar, and the production is out of this world.
@synthystation Жыл бұрын
They use a technique of clashing the bass note against the chords (instead of anchoring the chords with a root note) which creates a unique jazz flavor.
@retroreactions.... Жыл бұрын
Nice...their sound is so signature! Thanks for stopping by....
@WMMDWVMCGmail Жыл бұрын
LOL - not exactly - the bass does sometimes play an inversion (for example the third or fifth or seventh) instead of the root. not a "clash"

You can pretty much throw a dart at a list of Steely Dan songs and hit something great. Black Cow has an incredible loping groove which naturally has attracted the sampling attention of hip-hop producers, and Josie got some of that treatment as well. Along those lines, you oughta check out to "Kid Charlemagne" from the album prior to this, "The Royal Scam". It's got a flawless drum and bass groove by Bernard Purdie and Chuck Rainey, and a top-10-of-all-time guitar solo by Larry Carlton. The song was famously sampled by Kanye West after he wrote a pen-and-paper letter to Becker and Fagen to ask permission rather than the more typical email or phone call.

Steely Dan rarely uses all Brass without Woodwinds in their arrangements. It's probably safest to say, Horns. This is, perhaps, only a quibble that a long-time horn player such as myself would make. Best. Mike.

Some really great laid-back sounds on this album. Probably the most jazzy, uptempo, and relatively unloved song on the album is "I Got the News" which features a little vocal solo by Michael McDonald in the middle 8.

Synthesizers in 1977 weren't sophisticated enough to make that brass sound. They were moving beyond a "squonk" noise. But mostly they sounded like what you would think of as a keyboard sound. The Cars' first album in 1978 will give you the idea of what synthesizers were up to in the late 1970s. Great stuff, really added to a song, but certainly not like today's synths that can sound nearly convincingly like any instrument in the orchestra.
