Those synth patches on the chorus are glorious, especially in tandem with the backup vocals. That line where he calls the guy a "nasty schoolboy" cracks me up every time.

Steely Dan ! Oh YES !!! Every so often (every 2-3 weeks) I just _MUST_ take another deep dive into their music, it is sooo therapeutic to the soul !!!!!

Just outstanding. The incomparable Jeff Porcaro on drums, the Maestro Tom Scott on sax. Scott has a podcast and interviewed Donald Fagan. The description of how Gaucho came about is classic Fagan. I guy brings his gay lover dressed as a Gaucho to a high powered meeting. Fagan heard the story and wrote the song according to Scott.

The song literally lived or died by the drums simply because Becker and Fagen had resigned themselves that the song did not meet their musical standards. What ensued was Porcaro and the lead engineer stayed late and were able to piece together something they were both proud of. In the wee hours of the following morning both Fagen and Becker were called to let them know the song was complete. Both came into the studio with their own doubts and they were pleased at the end result and that is how the song lived another day and was not canned.

Another great reaction my friend! I always love the Steely Dan vibe! Definitely heard the sax, later with some trumpet peppered in. Gaucho, as well as other albums of theirs that I have, need to get dusted off and played more!! We need more than 24 hours in a day! 😊

Thank you!! Yes, I felt the sax definitely has the bigger presence of the 2 instruments in this one. Did you say you rent a warehouse for your EPIC record collection? 🤣 I'll gladly take 48 hour days, with 2 hours being the ideal sleep length for optimal health and energy!!! Oh and I'm awarding myself a trophy for not posting at 1 AM LOL.... 🏆

...I lit up immediately, when I saw that you'll react to 'Gaucho' - almost like a pre-Christmas... that whole song/experience is just simply enchanting, and rich like the best chocolate cake... and the build-up is so amazing... when the chorus comes in, its take-off time, up-up into the spheres... followed by 'Time out of Mind', those 2 are the highlight of the album for me! I think to get teary with this song is natural, as it is so hauntingly beautiful...💖

Apparently the song is about Donald's exasperation with Walter's South American "dealer" turning up at the recording sessions 😮 a little bit of a problem at the time.

The opening bars of Gaucho were "stolen" from a Keith Jarret tune; even when Steely Dan "steal" they do it with class.

@@retroreactions.... Plays ear, i mean, plaisir. Well, both. You probably already know their epics, like Royal Scam, Aja, and Babylon Sisters, but many overlook the sleeper in the corner, "Charlie Freak", which I find to be a great Christmas song, in the same way that Jethro Tull's "Christmas Song" is appropriate for the season. Both have bells, and both have a message of helping the needy.

@@retroreactions.... I know that you too love the bells. There is an illustrated version of CF that it out of this world. While musically a beautiful short tune, lyrically, it is a bit of a gutpunch. But real, far too real. Enjoy!!!!!! (he said quasi-sardonically).

"Gaucho" is not my favorite SD album (that's a race between "Countdown to Ecstacy" and The Royal Scam"), but I have never nearly disliked it as many fans and critics. One of the issues such people have with it: the production is too perfect - well, I get it, it's not wrong, but I don't care. They were always able to play pretty perfectly in their concerts. The title track is one of the best.
