LOVE this one! There's a great story behind it... In short, Donald Fagen befriended Rikki, the wife of one of his professors at Bard College. She was a writer who had grown up on the college’s campus and graduated from the university with a B.A. in Fine Arts a year before Fagen had enrolled there. The two found themselves at the same party, and despite Fagen’s knowledge that she was married - and the fact she was pregnant at the time - he gave Rikki his number. She never called...

Jay & Amber, you'll absolutely LOVE their "Aja", "Deacon Blues" and "Josie"!!!!! edit- Jeff Baxter (pre-Doobie Brothers) on electric guitar!! That's Jeff wearing the beret. Its Rikki Ducornet. Ducornet said they met at a college party, and even though she was both pregnant and married at the time, he gave her his number, although not in the same context as the song. Ducornet was intrigued by Fagen and tempted to call him, but she decided against it.

To me, Steely Dan created perfect records. The writing, the arrangement, the execution, the layering, the production--all perfect. Think about when you sit down to write something or draw something or cook something. How many times do you say "that was exactly what I was trying to do?" With Steely Dan, they just "nailed it." Aja is a perfect example of a perfect album.

omg my most favourite steely dan song. i know it's considered their most commercial hit but i absolutely love how silky smooth and melodic this song is! rikki is an actual woman whom songwriter donald fagen met at a party and was smitten. she was married and pregnant at the time so i love how it has a forlorn but yearning feel ❤ the intro is also an homage to the jazz classic "song for my father" by horace silver. p.s. the "number" y'all are wondering about is donald's phone number, which he gave her in the hope she'd call. she did not.

One thing I've noticed about you two is how Amber has really come a long way in how she can analyze a song and the different parts and different instruments while Jay just kinda flows along with "the groove' and giggles over the lyrics a bit! You two really play well off of each other and it's a lot of fun for us to watch. Keep it up. It's a great show. Deacon Blues and Black Cow. I'll patiently wait because there are a hundred other SD songs you could play as well. Cheers!

People move at Steely Dan concerts. They bob their heads, they tap their feet. It's funky and groovy, light rock, but more of a jazzy funky vibe mixed in that makes you move your body. And it's funny, because you guys were doing the Steely Dan fan moves. Lol. You'd fit right in. It's almost a meme. I saw some young folks being interviewed while waiting in line for one of their comeback concerts, They were asked what it was like being with all these people in a Steely Dan Concert, and they started bobbing their heads back and forth. Funny stuff.

The "Bum Bum, Bum Bum" is lifted directly from Jazz pianist Horace Silver's song "Song for my Father". Rookie Don't Lose That Number, along with Josie and Time Out of Mind are my favorite hits, though all their bits are excellent. Steely Dan, Pink Floyd, ELO and Deep Purple were my favorite FM rock bands from the 1970s. I'll give Dave Edmunds an honorable mention. But, then Lynyrd Skynyrd comes to mind as well. What a decade!

I could reel off 2 dozen Steely Dan songs you need to hear. Kid Charlemagne is an absolute must, but I suggest saving it until later. My first pick would be "My Old School". it is one of their earlier songs, but so much fun with a rockin' tempo, great guitar licks, and awesome horn parts. But whatever you choose you can't go wrong with the Dan! Thoroughly enjoyed your reaction to this one. Have a great weekend, RSR Fam!

I grew up with their music! I was 15 the year Deacon Blues busted out on the charts. What a fantastic beginning to a lifelong relationship with their music. RIP Walter Becker. After Steely Dan there's a whole other world of Donald Fagen's solo works (which oddly enough include Walter and others). I scanned thru the 800 plus messages below, and nobody recommend a Steely Dan that wasn't amazing.

Steely Dan started out as a band that toured but they evolved into a partnership of the songwriters Donald Fagen (keyboards and vocals) and Walter Becker (bass and guitar). Fagen and Becker were jazz fans who also liked rhythm and blues. As they went through the 70s they got jazzier and jazzier, culminating in their "Aja" album. They also stopped touring and hired the best session musicians in the USA to play on Steely Dan records. The first 2 bars of intro to this song are exactly like the intro to "Song For My Father" by jazz pianist Horace Silver. They started playing live again in the 1990s. I've seen Steely Dan 4 times in concert, the last time being in 2017 a couple months after Becker died. I think Fagen still runs the band and they're really ace musicians. So many songs for you to hear from these guys! "Doctor Wu", "Daddy Don't Live In That New York City No More", "Sign In Stranger", "Deacon Blues", "Josie", "FM."

Steely Dan is what we use to listen to when ending a night of LSD, Pink Floyd and the movie Forbidden Zone.

I'm a huge Steely Dan fan. It was so amazing growing up in the 70s and 80s and hearing awesome music like this on the radio. Great reaction Jay and Amber ❤❤❤❤❤

This is a great song, part of their more pop repertoire. Next up try FM (No Static at All) for the beginnings of their more groove songs. Black Cow, Green Earrings, Deacon Blues, Glamour Profession, My Rival, Babylon Sister, Hey Nineteen; these are all super groove/funky. So glad you're enjoying The Dan!

Another excellent reaction! The Dan are my favorite band because they check all the boxes: when I want to jam, when I want to chill, when I want to think, when I don't want to think, there's a Steely song to fit the need... They're raw and rough, but also smooth and highly technical... A couple of suggestions... Don't Take Me Alive rocks hard... Aja and Home At Last are as good as smooth jazz gets... Haitian Divorce and Caves of Altamira also show off these guys' (and the studio musicians') talent! There are very few meh songs in the entire Steely catalog, and almost all are end to end phenomenal! The pianist (and writer/composer) is Donald Fagen... You guys give me so much hope for the future of music! Keep up the great work!
