Be aware that you were going backwards as “do it again” was their first hit in 1973. It’s a bit confusing because the first part of the song sounds like a western and the second part sounds like gambling addiction in Vegas. Peg was a hit around 1977. They had moved much closer to Jazz by that time and were no longer touring.

My friend, the Dan is one of the most rewarding rabbit holes you can dive into. They are their own genre... mixing all music styles with jazz, and making great songs. Very hard to find a bad song. I would go back and start with their first album, and then go in order, past Aja and finally Gaucho.... that way you'll hear them the way we did growing up in their music. They are a 'desert island' choice for me and just about everyone I know. Have a good trip!

This is one of the Dan's jazz-funk songs, but they touch on almost every genre, and excellently. If you go down the rabbit hole, you will never look at music the same. My personal favorite is Kid Charlemagne, but there's dozens of others. You won't be disappointed, ever. Their lyrics are quite amazing, too, sometimes cryptic or sarcastic, but always brilliant.

I believe that "Do It Again" (studio version only) was their first big hit back in 1972. So I would start there. I have been waiting for you to discover them and go down their rabbit hole. Prepare yourself because the rabbit hole is massively deep.

I forgot to mention that the album version and the single version of "Do It Again" are different. The single version is shorter and it omits the organ solo. If possible, you should react to the album version because the organ solo is DYNAMITE.

my favourite - "rikki don't lose that number" should be next, it's melodic, perfectly structured, and gorgeous. steely dan make no bones about it not being their favourite and stopped playing it live years ago, despite it being their highest charting, most successful song. i think you'd love it ❤

Just about every single song from this group is fantastic!... This particular album when it was produced was one of the most expensive and technologically advanced productions ever made back in the day when this came out. Any high-end audio system company that was trying to sell their equipment would be having steely Dan playing when you walked into the shop. These guys were just amazing at producing this album. There was nothing like it at the time

The band name was taken from William S Burroughs novel, ‘A Naked Lunch.’ It was the name of a steam powered dildo. Burroughs moved to Mexico and devoted himself to drugs and alcohol, and during a late night session shot his wife through the head, purportedly while recreating the William Tell apple on the head story.

Steely Dan is a deep rabbit hole! The Aja album is considered the best produced album ever. In the day, when you went to buy a stereo system, the salesman would put on the Aja album to show how good the stereo was. My favorite song from Steely Dan is Black Cow. That is the first song on the Aja album. Black Cow was sampled by a famous rap artist as was Kid Charlemagne. You have plenty of music to go through, people below have written out some great options to choose from. But you can't go wrong with SD. They are musical geniuses.

Steely Dan were die-hard perfectionists in the studio. They threw away tons of recordings because they weren't exactly right. They hired tons of musicians to record the same songs over and over until the chemistry and feel were what they were working for. "FM (No Static At All)" is my favorite tune of theirs. It sounds so damn clean. Absolutely flawless. You might also like "Black Cow," or "My Old School," or "Deacon Blues."

This is one of my favorite Steely Dan songs. Like many Stevie Wonder songs from that era, it's a fantastic composition with a great groove, big band instrumentation, and jazz and funk influences. Chuck Rainey was killing it on the bass, and Michael McDonald adds incredible harmonies 🔥 Steely Dan (a band, not a person) is one of the greatest rock groups ever. There's a reason they've been sampled in a lot of hip hop!
