Stevie was shootin' the breeze with Jane one day and the subject of how time flies. Jane said I know, when I met Tom I was at the age of seventeen. Well due to her accent Stevie heard it as "The EDGE of seventeen". They had a good laugh about it but the words "The edge of seventeen" just kept rolling around in Stevie's head. That's where the song "The edge of seventeen" came from.

Some info you probably don't know ... After Stevie left Fleetwood Mac she want to join the band and kept bugging Tom to become one of the Heartbreakers. He said no, but gave this song, which he wrote, to Stevie for her first solo album.

The song was written by Tom Petty and Mike Campbell. The person responsible for this collaboration was producer Jimmy Iovine. Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers had recovered the original track, and Iovine suggested that Stevie Nicks try singing over it. What I didn't know until I just looked was that the bass was played by Duck Dunn.

Jimmy was secretly dating Stevie (they didn't tell anyone) and he not only convinced Tom to give the song to Stevie, but also convinced him (and the Heartbreakers) to play on it. Its a funny story to hear from Jimmy and Tom themselves ( I can't remember if it was on The "Defiant Ones", or the " Running Down a Dream" documentary

Stevie Nicks' "debut" solo album, "Bella Donna" is a wonderful work that flows so well from first track to the last one. If you can find her "White Wing Dove" concert that was shown on HBO back in the early 80s, I recommend giving it a watch! She and her band did a fantastic job on that show.

This is Tom Petty's band on this tune, the Heartbreakers. Their secret weapon is the pairing of guitarist Mike Campbell and organist Benmont Tench. Just listen to the way the instruments support each other; they're airtight. Next Stops: Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers, "You Got Lucky" Johnny Cash, "The Man Comes Around" (Mike Campbell plays guitar on this one) The Civil Wars, "From This Valley" (another incredible vocal duo, of Joy Williams and John Paul White)
