Texas Flood by Stevie Ray Vaughan has been long overdue. I made sure to go live at El Mocambo for this one. Before this reaction I had never heard anything from this guy. I didn't even know he existed. To say he is an animal on the guitar would be an understatement. I think we'll be looking at more Stevie Ray Vaughan in the future...

This was recorded shortly after his debut album was released. This is the title track. He had played all the guitar solos on Dsvid Bowie's album Let's Dance previously. This is blues. This is 1983. Just when you think he can't get better, he spins around. The solos were too easy previously. LOL And he sings like that. He mainly plays with a pick, but can also finger pick.

I'm so looking forward to this reaction. A little FYI- Stevie played with the thickest and heaviest strings you could play on and they were lifted higher than most strings on the fret board so that he could get the sound he wanted. He'd rip the skin off of his fingertips from playing and he'd SUPER GLUE them back on and keep playing. He was a little guy (5'5' or 5"6 ish) but LOOK AT HIS HANDS! After his death, #1(the guitar in this video and the only thing that survived the plane crash that killed him- CORRECTION helicopter crash, thanks @howiewarren243) was displayed in a case I believe at a Hard Rock Cafe, and I did read somewhere that LEGEND guitarists couldn't even play his instrument. They (his hands) were massive and also contributed to his ability to literally wrap his hands around the neck of the guitar ALSO- Another great who could not read music and was self taught. Now, if you want to hear another great one from Stevie, look up "Little Wing" from the same concert (el Mocambo) and then find "Life without You" at the Capital Theatre in 1985 (where he loses a tooth and keeps playing),and if you have some time watch his concert at the Montrose. Blues was becoming a "dying" genre and Stevie pulled it back into its rightful relevance. I could go on and on! Amazing amazing artist!

Because of Stevie Ray Vaughan when I was a kid I used to put super glue on the tips of my fingers when I first started playing guitar it actually helps you develop calluses pretty quickly

Sadly Stevie was killed in a helicopter crash in August 1990. There has never been a greater guitarist than him. He was self taught because he loved music, especially the blues. The guitar in his hands becomes an extension of him and his soul. He is still greatly loved and missed.

I was kinda of being tongue in cheek (I’ve played guitar since I was 7 I’m 44 this year) to me as a guitarist that moment was absolutely incredible, more so than ANYTHING I’ve ever seen from EVH or really ANY “revered” guitarist. Anyone who plays guitar knows the point I’m making. You break a string “you’re done” until it gets fixed. I’ll never forget… we were on vacation in San Antonio Texas and was walking through the hotel parking garage. Stevie Ray and his entourage walked by and stopped to ask if we were enjoying our visit in the city. Spent about 10 minutes talking with us. Super nice guy, he was a very genuine person. Not to mention the best guitarist EVER. It was just a few weeks later when he and other members of the band died in that fateful helicopter crash. Definitely a sad day for music.

Yeah, yeah, yeah. And if you want to dig just a bit further...this is the '12-bar blues' form. The time signature is so slow that even I can play the chord progression (I don't really have much musical talent) on a rhythm guitar. That leaves the lead soloist to....just....go...off (into some other place and time). You are also correct that this music can just allow a listener to CHILL OUT (using whatever vehicle one may choose, if you will). I will never forget when and where I was when I heard SRV had passed. That was a sad, hard day. The house is a rockin', don't bother knockin'....Just come on in!

When electric guitars sleep, they have nightmares about SRV. I had the privilege to see him live many years ago, unbelievable. To get that tone he used strings that were incredibly thick. He would use super glue to glue torn callouses back on his fingertips so he could continue playing. The BEST there ever was.

Yessir! Sorry for the long comment, this just got me hyped! (This was 1982 by the way, a few months before he was discovered by the world). You've officially been baptized by the greatest to ever do it. He is improvising - all feel and soul - most of the entire song - he has his go-to licks and structure and moves but his soul get's locked in and he just leaves normal earth behind and travels and brings us along (one of the cool things about getting into the blues...it will help your guitar playing to learn the blues as it is the source of all music, and once you have some comfort, you can improvise forever.). Welcome to a new world as there are dozens of videos of SRV and he NEVER disappoints. ALWAYS DO HIM LIVE!!! Most people check "Voodoo Child" next, any version will do, and to really hear his vocals "Life Without You - Live at Capital Theater" - "Mary Had a Little Lamb - live from Austin" and EVERY SINGLE song from this concert, SRV Live from El Mocambo (check out "Lenny" from the same concert to have instant brain explosion). He is the Baddest MF to ever go out and demolish the guitar and electric blues on stage. While he can be so gentle, precise, and take you through the clouds with the angels bending around soft corners, he also rips and tears into it like he is possessed with something, mean, beautiful and spiritual all at the same time. He was on fire that night - every night - but it is a gift to guitar players and music lovers that people were on hand to record this night, from which this version of "Texas Flood" is from. He never played the same song the same way twice, so you can watch a different "Texas Flood" live and he'll do the same basic structure, some of the main licks and such, but every time out he let his soul drift into some magical place and he gave it all back, and it'll be a totally different outcome. He eventually gave us his life (RIP Stevie it still hurts) in a freak helicopter crash in 1990, 7 years of the spotlight, and IMO - and its cool for anyone to love whoever, Van Halen, Jimmy Page, of course Jimi Hendrix -and many many more - the most, it isn't about wrong or right, it is personal and whoever hits you or touches your soul is your GOAT - but for me and multiple generations since, it all begins and ends with Stevie. The blues are an incredible rabbit hole to go down which stretches you back to insane players like Robert Johnson in the 1930's, with cheap beat-up acoustic and nothing else, playing for whiskey and a bed that night in the old deep American south (Mississippi Delta blues is THE SOURCE) to BB King in the 60's and a zillion other amazing players. Stevie's beat up 1962 Fender Stratocaster you just watched is arguably the most valuable guitar on planet earth (if you go back and watch or on future vids, he just uses one pedal, and a Wah pedal, but he is constantly adjusting his pickups and tone knobs mid song in a purely subconscious master wizard level, to get that perfect tone (his tone is just as epic as his playing). He called this guitar 'Number 1' and it is the sickest guitar hands down, to me at least. SRV went through a battle of life to arrive at the man you just witnessed and his guitar fits the part. Enjoyed many of your vids over last couple years, glad you got to this one, it is a game changer.

This concert was 1983, but Stevie's influences were 50's, 60's and 70s. He took traditional blues, added fire, magic and insane passion and elevated it to what you see here. I was lucky enough to see him live once before he passed.

At the time of this amazing performance SRV had already been practicing/playing most every day for 20 years. He was established and working by the time he was 14. Started at 7 years old. And yes that was too funny that you had to guess that maybe this is the BLUES oh yes the master of the blues, and ALL guitarists acknowledge his greatness

I remember the night that helicopter went down. Bawled my eyes out. And for a brief few minutes they thought Eric Clapton was on it with him. Talk about heartbreak.

He died in a helicopter crash on August 27th 1990. Every year, I love to listen to his music on this day, I believe it is a fitting tribute to him. Im from Texas, and he was absolutely a son of Texas, and we miss him all the time. RIP SRV

Stevie Ray Vaughn was my FIRST concert. 15 years old and completely blown away. I remember exactly where I was when the radio announced that he had died. No one like him. Native Texan here BTW... he used really heavy strings and high action which helped his sound. Guitarist would pick up his guitar and then set it right back down. This is 1982.

never got to go to a show ; but accidentally discovered him when i was 13 when his '89 Austin City Limits show aired, and it completely changed my life in that moment. just like i'll never forget watching MTV News a year later, seeing them announce the crash and his passing. i think i still haven't fully recovered from that.

Congrats young man, you've just been introduced to the greatest Blues Guitarist in history and overall considered in the high ranks of all electric guitarist that ever lived. SRV. You will never look at other guitar players the same ever again. What you heard and saw can not be unseen. There are players and then there are Masters. One is one in 2 million maybe, then there is SRV and he was one is maybe 2 billion that could do what he did. Think I am exaggerating? Do the research and what other guitarist say about him. I believe i commented for you to do this. I am so happy that you covered this. SRV is a guitar legend taken far too soon. I was born and raised and still live in Wisconsin. Later in my teenage years that i found out that his plane crashed after a show at Alpine Valley here in Wisconsin, i first listened to SRV and his genius guitar playing. It is hypnotic and catches you in the feels. Even tho he passed at such a young age, what he accomplished in that time is legendary. Musicians like him dont come around anymore. Im just happy i can re-live these tracks from reactors like you. Keep up the awesome content bruv.

I've been watching reaction videos to every genre for maybe 5 or 6 years now, SRV was and still is my favorite rabbit hole. Highly recommend one of the three: Life Without You (live @ the Capitol Theatre), Lenny (Live @ the El Mocambo), or Little Wing (also live @ the El Mocambo). Some of the most intense & emotional performances I've ever seen, regardless of artist. Absolutely breaks my fucking heart that he died the way he did, especially after getting sober. Seems to happen with all the legends.
