No, this is true. On this song, he pays tribute to three of his guitar heroes: Jimi, Albert King, and Charley Christian. Covering Little wing overall and the wah-wah heavy section is the tribute to Jimi, the more aggressive-bendy section is the tribute to Albert King (search for videos of Stevie playing with Albert King), and the quieter, jazzier section is his tribute to Charley Christian.

@@williambooth8728 Fair enough if you want to think of it that way, but in general I believe the phrase "the old blues players" usually references people like Son House, Sleepy John Estes, or Mississippi John Hurt. The 'real' "old blues players" from the 1930's.

Little Wing (by Jimi Hendrix originally) does indeed have lyrics, but there aren't many of them: Well she's walking, through the clouds With a circus mind that's running wild Butterflies and zebras And moonbeams And-a fairytales That's all she ever thinks about Riding with the wind When I'm sad, she comes to me With a thousand smiles she gives to me free It's alright, it's alright, she says it's alright Take anything you want from me Anything...

This is a cover of a Jimi Hendrix song. Stevie was a HUGE fan of Jimi as am I. Jimi was before my time but I saw Stevie play live and it was life changing he was that amazing. Little Wing was recorded by Jimi with Noel Redding and Mitch Mitchel in about 20 min of studio time left. Chas Chandler was his manager who was in the band the Animals and Eddie Kramer was the producer. Stevie bought the very same year and type of guitar Jimi played, same amp, same peddles, even the same patch cord. Stevie was right handed so even played the same guitar as Jimi who was left handed but could not afford a left handed guitar so played a right handed guitar upside down. Both these men are gods of rock/blues music. If there is an afterlife hope they are jamming together. That would be heaven.

This is such a right on comment. A few more totally random comments: SRV is wow. Hendrix is wow. I once saw a comment (jokingly) by Jeff Beck, stating that he wanted to quit playing once he heard Stevie. There are actually words to Little Wing. And ... when I was growing up, I once went to a music venue...pretty small, maybe about 50 or so capacity. George Thorogood was playing. In the audience was Stevie. Thorogood saw him, called him up on stage and handed him a spare guitar ... and they jammed for a song. IT WAS F'IN FANTASTIC.

@@pmbbmp I hope they can find a way to solve your issue. Going two years without being able to play led to depression. The first song I played 2 days after surgery on my left hand was Blackbird. It hurt but the surgeon said playing would be great rehab. 2 months later I had the right hand done. It wasn't nearly as bad as the left but would be eventually. At our age, we play for ourselves more than anyone. The only time I play out now is when I need a date for something. I'll just sit in for a few songs and it's the easiest way to pick up younger and more attractive women. After all, isn't that why in some part picked the guitar up in first place?

The most spot-on comment I ever read about reacting to Stevie Ray Vaughan went something like this... "My wife and I watched an SRV performance. Afterward she said, "Stevie Ray Vaughan makes my ovaries quiver." I thought that captured it perfectly! Since you've seen two songs from this 1983 show at the El Mocambo, you might want to check out mind-blowing performances from the 1989 Austin City Limits show. Stevie was clean and sober and looking great! My favorites from that show are Voodoo Child, Riviera Paradise (another instrumental), Cold Shot, Couldn't Stand the Weather, Crossfire, Tightrope, Look at Little Sister (smoothest guitar switchout ever when a string breaks), and Mary Had a Little Lamb (yes, it's the nursery rhyme and you should see what Stevie does with it for sure). By that time an amazing keyboard player (Reese Wynans) joined Double Trouble along with drummer, Chris Layton, and bassist, Tommy Shannon. Another great pick is the live performance of Tin Pan Alley at the Montreux Jazz Festival where Stevie plays with one of his idols, Johnny Copeland. I think you'd love his vocal delivery on that one! Thanks for the joy of your reactions!❤

The reason he stepped towards the mic the first time was to play a wah wah (or Cry Baby) pedal. You control the timbra of the guitar signal creating a sound as if the guitar is crying. The stick thing is called a tremolo bar (or whammy bar) it tightens (pull back) or loosens (Push down) the strings.

Stevie was simply the best blues guitarist of his generation, and one of the best to ever pick up the instrument. The blues players before him (BB King, Buddy Guy, Buddy Guy, Albert King, Bo Diddley) considered Stevie to be one of the greats. He never played a song the same way twice if he could help it, and on a 12-bar blues scale, rarely repeated a musical phrase. To answer the carpal tunnel question, that's one of many injuries and things that don't get spoken about enough. Every instrument damages you. Wrecks your hands, fingers, forearms, shoulders, back, neck. Add in drums and you'll trash your knees too. Musicians are walking injuries. Sacrifice the body for the music. Very common.

Much like Eric Clapton and Chris Stapleton, SRV wasn't really confident about his singing ability. But he KNEW he could make a guitar sing! The rhythm section in this song needs to be called out too - lays an excellent groove for him to work on top of.

Some thoughts: "he could play while in a coma". Interesting you would say that because legend is he was in a cocaine induced coma an hour before this show and had to have medical attention and IV to rehydrate. This is from the 1983 show at a Toronto club called El Mocambo. The show was apparently televised on Canadian TV. The heavy sweating is in part due to the heavy drug use. He later cleaned up and got even better. You should check out his 1989 Austin City Limits show for a clean and sober SRV.

Eric Clapton once described Stevie as an "open channel" for the blues when he plays.

Stevie definitely is communing in this song, and the alchemy in the mix of his musical soul and skill creates gold... a faultless interpretation of Jimi's music. I can't say that Jimi's "Little Wing" is anywhere near a favorite song of mine of those Jimi created, but to the respect SRV gives it, and the appreciation and tribute he gives Jimi's intense, innovating spirit, the result from Stevie's hands is superb. I love SRV to the heavens and back! ❤

Stevie did a great job on this Hendrix classic. Unfortunately both of these master guitarists are long gone. Stevie died just miles from where I lived in 1990, and it sent shock waves through the fans of SRV'S playing. RIP Stevie and Jimi!

I got carpal tunnel in both my hands from playing guitar all my life. I’m sure if Stevie lived long enough he would have had it as well. He is improvising as he’s going. It’s hard to constantly come up with ideas and this is what made him great.

You’re not wrong about the GOAT comment. If you ever watched one of his concerts on tv you’d know for sure. Literally exhausting

Stevie was a massive fan of Jimi Hendrix. He also was able to do a jam with Albert King. I grew up in Texas and would hear his guitar work on my radio. Him and Jimi made me want to learn guitar. Thankfully, I still have a ways to go with guitar skills, but getting anywhere close to Stevie would be an achievement. Congratulations on your Paetreon for recommending this!

Previous comment touched on the strength in the hands of SRV. He has to play the largest strings he could find because standard string would break because of him bending them so far over the fret. I believe it may have even been bass guitar strings due to them being larger diameter. He was and is the 🐐

I got to see the guitar on temporary display at the rock and roll hall of fame. A relevant and famous singer today that all of you would know, has even said if that guitar was on sale somebody would have to outbid me for it because he said I would love to have it. Prince always said that guitar is priceless. He said you really couldn’t put a price on it. He had so many guitars, but that was Old Faithful.
