There used to be a chain restaurant in the '80s called The Red Onion, which was kind of like a Chili's, except that it had a nightclub and dance floor section (these are the days before everything had to be "family friendly" -- see Las Vegas, lol) and whenever this song came on, people would bumrush to the dance floor to get their groove on. SO many part-time lovers 😂

The music on this song is a deliberate throwback to the Golden age of Motown s "You Can't Hurry Love" (Diana Ross & The Supremes), "I'm Ready For Love" (Martha Reeves & The Vandellas), "All I Need" (The Temptations) - also employed by Hall & Oates on "Maneater." Luther Vandross does an excellent job on background vocals and this one of countless classics by Stevie Wonder! Please also check "I Was Made To Love Her.", "I Wish", (I think you already did "Living For The City" and "Sir Duke"), "Ribbon In The Sky" and "Black Man."

Was this on his album.....'In Square Circle'? I saw him in Oakland on that tour......in the late 1980s I think it was. I had an extra ticket, and remember offering it to some girl I met on the dance floor. On the way to the concert......THAT.... was when she decided to tell me she actually had a husband, who happened to be sitting in jail on 'assault' charges. It made for some very awkward conversation after that, and the 80-mile drive home was relatively silent. I was in such a rush to get her home, that I got pulled over on the freeway for speeding.

song is cold af, love the way he cuts in hard on "just pass me by -- don't even speak" always thought this would have been a killer song for MJ too, maybe a little flashier in that case lol

I love this song - makes me wish I grew up in the 80s! You might like 'Womack and Womack - Teardrops' from around the same time :) x
