Thank you for saying that! He gets zero mention for his introduction of synths into popular music.
@johncampbell756
@johncampbell756 Жыл бұрын
Les Paul created a massive amount, including multitrack recording. As for synths, the first one you could buy in a music store was the Minimoog. That was 1970. I'm not sure when Stevie first used a synth, but I keep seeing 1971, the same year as The Who. The Beatles used a MOOG on Abbey Road (1969) and, of all people, The Monkees had sythns on a record in 1967. All that said, no one in these bands mastered the synth the way Stevie did. And only Paul McCartney tivals his all around musical ability. Though, I'm mentioning these other people, I'm not trying to diminish Stevie. He just has some good company.
@keithroberts4952
@keithroberts4952 Жыл бұрын
@@johncampbell756 thanks for that John. For me, every artist you mentioned used the synth as additional embellishment which was great! However, stevie used the synthesisers to create whole bodies of work. He would play the drums, add probably Fender Rhodes or clavinet and have the synths add colour to the songs. Plus, he played moog bass as well. By the 80's a lot of r'n'b music became synth driven as they followed the sonic template pioneered by stevie. Part time lover is a great example of stevie as a one man band in action!

@@themajicman745 I don't see him or any other backing vocalists credited on my copy of the Roberta Flack & Donny Hathaway LP (despite an extensive list of session players), and can't find any copies on Discogs that show this info, either. I don't doubt that he worked on the LP, but the fact that his name wasn't a featured credit is probably why his collaboration with David Bowie is often credited as his "big break", since he arranged the backing vocals in addition to singing, and was involved in major TV performances and became a part of Bowie's international touring band in the mid-1970s.

When he put this out in 1985, Luther had "When My Baby Comes Home" at the same time; the next two singles were Luther's "It's Over Now" and Stevie's "Go Home." My favorite all time artist. Too many great songs to choose from, but if I had to pick one for you it would be "Superwoman, where were you when I needed you" from his Music of my Mind album. One of the most important albums ever recorded, because it resulted from his fight for musical independence. A fight he won against Motown records, as he broke with the Motown Sound and his kid image. The album was experimental and set a new foundation for R&B, in short he became to R&B what the Beatles were to Rock/Pop.

Jay and Amber there is the video to Stevie's song "Do I Do". Dizzy Gillespie does a trumpet solo that is to hear and see. The cheeks while playing that trumpet! All I could ever say when seeing the video is WOW! Dizzy's trademark cheeks.

You're feelin' it, J&A! Stevie in the 80s, was on fire! This one, of course, "Go Home, Girl" "Send One Your Love" "Master Blaster" "Land Of La La" "Happy Birthday" "Did I Hear You Say You Love Me?" "That Girl" "Overjoyed" "Do I Do" "I Just Called To Say I Love You" "Never In Your Sun" "As If You Read My Mind" "Stranger On the Shore Of Love" (quite a few more from earlier and later on, too)...like "You Haven't Done Nothin'" "Front Line" "Golden Lady" "You Are the Sunshine Of My Life" "Isn't She Lovely?" "Don't You Worry 'Bout a Thing" "Ribbon In the Sky" "Ebony And Ivory"(with Sir Paul McCartney) "Higher Ground" "Lately" "Living For the City" (many more)

Stevie has quite a catalog. He started out as "Little Stevie Wonder", he was just a kid in his teens. Fingertips (part one) an instrumental (harmonica Some beautiful slower songs: I Just Called To Say I Love You, My Cherie Amoure, Isn't She Lovely, Ribbon In The Sky, I Was Made To Love Her. Then there are: Signed, Sealed and Delivered, Living ForThe City, Knocks Me Off My Feet,, For Once In My Life, Do I Do....and so much more.

You guys will enjoy listening to his song, "Skeletons". It's a very funky, jazzy banger from back in the 80s.

The other great, silky voice on this, who is doing all the "duh do da" scatting is the great Luther Vandross. Listen to him doing "The Glow Of Love", "Here And Now", "Give Me The Reason", and "Never Too Much" all big hits for him. IMO Luther was the greatest R&B male singer of his generation. RIP Luther, we still miss you.

"Never Too Much" I have suggested a long long time ago. It is one of those 80's R&B Classics that if Jay and Amber have never heard, they should at some point. Essential Luther Classic. It's his first!

@@lreed1040 Actually "The Glow Of Love" and "Searchin' " with the group Change were is first big hits, and I actually prefer both of those. But yeah, "Never Too Much", along with "Give Me The Reason" are classics.

@@helgar791 I stated First meaning his solo first. I liked Change back then haven't listened to them in a long time. Those songs are Change hits which Luther was a member they are not just his hits alone. "Never Too Much" would be "his" first hit. That's just my way of thinking. When an artist goes solo I keep it separate than their group or band material. As an R&B artist Never Too Much is my Favorite by him.

Perhaps you refer to the song with the title "As". Yes, As is a true masterpiece, the bridge in it is very spiritual, with direct reference to the Gospel of John.

I love your reactions. At the end of this song you may have heard a different voice...it's Luther Vandross scatting. I love him too. Check out Stevie Wonder's "Superwoman" An absolute masterpiece. On another note, I am a 62 y.o. woman on a fixed income so I can't do Patreon but I want you to know I watch every reaction you do...music and movies and I love them all. Thanks for being my go to family.
