If you like Styx with a proggy feel, you need to check out Crystal Ball from the album of the same name. Great song!

They really did do music differently back in the 70s didn't they. There's an epic almost stage production feel to so many songs, including this one. Thanks for sharing.

A wee bit of power ballad, a wee bit of prog(or what Dennis DeYoung will sometimes call "theatrical "), gorgeous vocals---classic Styx Another must from this album: " I'm OK "

Thank you so much Alan. Nice, a lifelong fan! I've certainly loved a couple of Styx songs since the 80s, but so happy to be finally delving into more on this channel. Have a great night!

Hey Brandon. I was only just recently introduced to the band and was blown away by the excellent prog rock elements to them that escaped me at the time. Some of their music is as good as anything out there mixing that prog element with some harmonies resembling Queen at their very best. All the very best. Dave✅✅

Can't be wrong here, this song were one of my favorite from Styx then, a piano driven piece, I always loved that middle bridge very progressive , the rest was cinématic. Contrasted music, rock and soft ballad, great voices with those choruses as well as Dennis de Young. Thanks for this musical visit Brandon !

Excellent choice. I don't think I have listened to this one since the 1980s, and I don"t know why the long break. Their incredible PARADISE THEATER may have distracted me. They have many great tracks to keep you busy.

The last great Styx album, IMHO. While they continued to have individual great songs after this, POE was their last really consistent one. But you should have allowed it to play into “Aku-Aku”, as the tracks are really of a piece to be listened to together.

I typed-up these comments the day you released this reaction - I guess it didn't take when submitted 'cause I don't see it in the comments now. So, here are my comments... It seems so many songs that become the album title have so much care, time, focus, extravagance, and production behind them making for an enjoyable listen by those who listen to entire albums at a time; even though the song was not a "hit". This is true for "Pieces Of Eight". BTW, Styx performed "Pieces Of Eight" for the first time since they did the whole album shows(last of those in 2012?) at the Wednesday performance at their mini-residence at the Venetian in Las Vegas a couple months ago (I was going to go to just 3 shows, but ended up attending all 5). When I was in high school in the late 70's, I went to a "artsy" performance at N.C. State University where there was a multi-media presentation (3 computer-controlled slide projectors and music - high tech for those days) where the theme was "Dream Weaver" by Gary Wright. For one stretch, "Pieces Of Eight" accompanied the visuals of people on crowded Manhattan streets rushing to and from their jobs in skyscraper offices. The measures of the instrumental part of the song was cool in that they provided the timing of when the projectors would switch overlapping images. When I saw them perform the whole "Pieces Of Eight" album in concert and they got to this title song, I said to myself that their video at the concert was not the "real" images that should accompany the song. They need to track down the guy who did that multi-media show and use his pictures and timing. I agree, "Man In The Wilderness"(expanded version: kzbin.info/www/bejne/mJquo3d8d9VjpNU ) is the one you should do next(more Tommy Shaw exposure). I would also suggest some James "JY" Young with "Young Man", "Miss America" (live), or "Snowblind" (Tommy sings chorus). You could also do "A Day" a jazz-rock fusion song by the original member before Tommy, John Curulewski(who wrote and performed "Prelude 12, the intro. track to "Suite: Madame Blue" you reacted to a few months ago). You've done a number of Styx songs, but there's a large catalog of both "hits" and deep-cuts that are great.

Hello. So sorry for the delay in responding. Sadly I got WAY behind on comments, but I still want to try my best to see all of them! How cool to see Styx perform this song in 2024! Thanks for the suggestions. I will add them to my list. Currently it's around 3 months between a band's "turn" on my channel, looks like Styx's turn will be coming again in a few weeks 😊 Thanks for the great comment..

Love early proggy Styx. Now Brandon, on to an unrelated band. Please react to The Who!!! One of the greatest bands of all time and in my opinion have the greatest bass player of all-time and the most unique drummer, bar none. It's a glorious rabbit hole you will not soon forger. A bit harder than you usually listen to, but soooooo worth it!!!!

Nice to see Styx back in the fold. Not my favorite album, it’s got some great songs, but I’m a little partial to their earlier albums. I saw every tour from “The Grand Illusion” up to the “Kilroy Was Here”. “Pieces of Eight” I saw twice. Styx is always great live… the last time I saw them was in 1996 when Kansas opened for them.

I’ve still got to lobby for “Little Fugue in “G”/ Father O.S.A.” I know you’ll love the cathedral pipe organ (also some chimes). It’s from Styx II from 1973….there’s a great guitar solo featuring JY and JC towards the end. I’m guessing many listeners are more familiar with newer songs, and may not be as familiar with this great song!
