I agree. I remember the year "Steal this Album" came out. My parents had a little garden with a hut near the Forest 3-4 km outside of our village, and in the christmas holidays 3 friends and i(we all were between 16 and 18) walked there every evening, freezing our asses off, listening to Toxicity and Steal this Album up and down every day for like 4 weeks, jugging some beers in the candle light and singing along and burning through countless batteries on a portable CD Player. Those were a simple, but the best time back then. Some time later i actually met a girl because of Mezmerize, when i was blasting BYOB so loud on my Minidisc Player that the busdriver kicked me out after people complained and while i was pretty embarassed, she actually got off the bus laughing and asking if we can listen together. married since 12 years now. i really connect some of the best moments in my life with SoaD.

They’ve said this song is about how people are perceived more based on how they die than on how they lived, especially if it’s a “shameful” way like suicide or an overdose. The original title was just Suicide, but the label wouldn’t let them use it so they chopped suicide in half, hence Chop Suey. Them eating Chinese food in the video was kind of an fu to the studio. The verse lyrics are references to the daily thought processes of a suicidal/addicted person.

Brief explanation This, like most SOAD songs, always has a deep message. Let's define the premise, starting from the look of the song is based on L0s Angeles, the Armenian band members and various lines of music depict the Armenian way of life and also Los Angeles being the biggest Armenian community outside Armenia. Then the song speaks strongly about the roots band Armenians. Toxicity according to band member Daron Malakian is on Deficit Disorder of attention. But the metaphor can be extended to the letter I think it has a very deep meaning. Now the line " conversion software 7.0 version" parodies the forced release of AOL version 7.0 in 2001 where it was essential everyone to update. The members are trying to convey that we are being controlled by corporations that force us to make these changes and updates by cause of their profits. The second line, which says look at life through the eyes of a hub tired, exemplifies the narrow mindset of people who do not see the general picture of corporate greed and still continue to do what they are doing. Now, eating seeds for Armenians is LITERALLY an activity of hobby. I heard that in Armenia the most men are on the streets, without job, spending time eating sunflower seeds... it's everywhere place. It is said that even in the USA you can see the trail of sunflower seeds leading to Armenians (specifically Armenians who came from Armenia). You have clutter - There is a lot of clutter in Armenia. There are no jobs, the police are corrupt, the government is linked to the mafia and the protesters are brutalized. People in Armenia are apathetic, hopeless and gave up to some extent. the USA is like paradise compared to Armenia... Sacred silence and sleep - With the lack of jobs and the field going to the dogs, have something to pass the time (like eating sunflower seeds) is ideal. The silence Run because no one is really, genuinely happy; so the silence is created. People have nothing better to do to do than eat sunflower seeds and sleep to pass the time. Daydreams of lanterns trapped in headlights a truck." He's talking about someone fall asleep at the wheel of a car and get into Traffic. The driver collides with a truck because, in a dream, he saw the truck headlights how can lsso mean technology is numbing our sense of reality (and that we are constantly stuck in a state between silence and sleep?), or it could just be a example of the disorder that is happening around us. are stuck in technology instead of helping and helping people in Armenia who suffered as a genocide. This talks about wealthy Armenians in America doing nothing for genocide-ravaged Armenia. war. In short, it's about your content. poisonous. Your level of toxicity. But toxicity does not necessarily mean the toxicity of a person, can be the city toxicity. Or the toxicity of one nation. The toxicity of a speech. AND just the general toxicity that's in the involving in general. Hope this helps

Serj has such a wide arsenal of vocal tricks that he can do to enhance an already impressive voice. In this song alone we saw him pull off a few quick vocal riffs, growls, a cry, a whine, and being able to alternate his mouth position to work different vowel changes - which they did a few times. I always enjoy his harmonies with Daron (guitarist). Daron does a great job hitting those higher sections in the harmonies, and I get a kick out of SOAD newbies thinking aloud "They don't look like they should sound like that." Thanks for another wonderful review, Jen! :)

So - as a musical theater performer i am sure you can truly appreciate Serj and his amazing vocal abilities. My mother is a classically trained singing teacher, so getting her to appreciate things like this is a little more difficult. She certainly did not appreciate me playing stuff like this as a teenager 😅 But i do think bands like SOAD are exactly how to get people who care about vocal performance and dramatic/ theatrical performance into metal music. Serj can combine classical lyrical vocals, harsh metal vocals and traditional Caucasian/Armenian folk vocal styles with ease. He is probably joint equal with Slipknots Corey Taylor (though quite different) regarding the best 90s/'nu metal' vocalists.
