Taylor originally wrote Babe for the RED album (2012) but it didn't make the cut. Most of the songs that didn't make the cut of their respective albums, she eventually put them on the re-record of those albums as Vault Tracks. BUT, with Babe, Taylor instead decided to sell it to Sugarland back in 2018 and she featured on it. However, after her masters were sold and she decided to re-record, she re-recorded Babe as she originally wrote it with just her vocals

Taylor wrote it for Red, but the album was too long (she was 22, and the deluxe version was 22 tracks. . . . .) but she didn't forget the song, and decided Sugarland's vocals would be a good fit. So she offered it to them, and they accepted. Taylor sang backup on the track; she also storyboarded the video, so the concept of the film is hers. And, she dropped in a minor Easter Egg by wearing a RED wig. Another song she decided to loan out was Better Man; she let Little Big Town record that one. Now, they're Taylor's Version songs, and she altered the production on her version (benefits of working with Jack and Aaron so long).

Taylor gave the song away to Sugarland. It's her song and then, Sugarland wanted her to still sing it so, they asked her to feature on it. And then, when she was rerecording Red, she decided to make it a vault track because it didn't make it to her original album

I think because she performed Stay so raw, even though there was no known connection to the song, that people felt there had to be a story behind it. She just has this ability to emotionally go there, similar to how Taylor can reconnect to the pain of so gs even a decade after the pain has healed.

Like others have mentioned, Taylor wrote the song originally for Red (2012), sold it to Sugarland when it didn’t make the album, then added it as a vault track for Red (Taylor’s Version) in 2021. I would recommend listening to the song “Better Man”! It’s almost the exact same scenario as “Babe”. Taylor wrote “Better Man” for Red (2012), decided not to put it on the record, sold it to a band called Little Big Town, then added it to Red (Taylor’s Version) a few years ago. Little Big Town (LBT) has a music video for their version of it, too! TBH I have never watched it because even though I knew Taylor wrote the song, I personally did not care for the LBT version. The production wasn’t my cup of tea. However, when Red (Taylor’s Version) came out I could not stop listening to her version! Absolutely criminal that she left the song off the album in 2012. In 2021 when Red TV came out, I screamed this song so often and so loud that my neighbors thought my husband and I were going through a divorce. 😂 I had to say, “no, we’re doing great but I’m a swiftie who’s been waiting for this version of the song for almost 10 years” haha 🫶🏻🤡

Oh, definitely not fun, Taylor’s playing the “other woman” in the Sugarland video. But what is fun is the re-recording process, we get to hear Taylor giving us songs how she would have presented them (production style, etc) if they had been on the original album. It's worth watching more Sugarland. They won't all make you cry. Some of them will make you laugh out loud. It's important to notice that in the Sugarland video, both Jennifer & Taylor sing the line "We said no one else." This is a classic story. The subordinate woman at work seduced by the supervisor who claims to be either single or unhappy in his relationship & planning to leave his wife. It's such a cliché that I can't even remember the origin of the friend character's advice, "They always say they're going to leave the wife. They never do." Of course, that's neither comfort nor guarantee for spouses who are cheated on. The point is, often "the other woman" is being played too. Taylor has been interested in the complexities of infidelity stories for a long time. She's studied it and written about it from many angles. She even revised a song with her evolving perspective, feminism, and nuance. It would be interesting to trace the themes of competition, secret emotional attachments, and infidelity throughout Taylor's full discography.

In terms of a band breaking up, you may be thinking of The Civil Wars (Joy Williams and John Paul White) who Taylor recorded Safe and Sound with??? They stopped recording together after their 2013 album but did the re-record of S&S for Red TV. The power of Taylor to bring people together. Also, you should do the same as this video for Better Man. Little Big Town is a quartet (2 women and 2 men). It's a really good song and their sound is different than Taylor's recording of it. And this is not to be confused with Pearl Jam's Better Man which is also an excellent song (different lyrics and sound, just happes to have the same title). Eddie Vedder has big respect for Taylor (unlike Dave Grohl) and Eddie was at one of the final Eras shows in Vancouver.

The story behind Stay has a couple different takes, There's Jennifer was the other woman and there's Jennifer was going through a rough divorce. I'm not sure which is true, but I do know that Kristian didn't want Jennifer to go through that again for another take.
