This is such a great song! She paints the picture so vividly. She also did actually get a boating license when she was 15 lol
@MizukiLovesDraco8 ай бұрын
What's wild is, while this song is fictional like many of the other songs on this album and its sister album, Taylor actually really did get a boating license when she was 15. 👀

Chris Watts. He killed his 2 beautiful daughters and his pregnant wife. They were expecting a son, Nico. He was convicted of killing all 3 people and the unborn child. The way he did it was so sickening and vile. The wife had a best friend that had the police there on day 1. She’s a true hero for her friends justice.

Was that the guy who told the police that his wife and kids went to the pool that day and didn't come back yet?

Honesty is the only way to go. Glad you enjoyed the storytelling aspect of this song. Songwriting is at the very core of who Taylor Swift is as an artist, and we love when reactors pay attention to her lyrics. It's always a strategy to show new listeners some live performance before diving into the lyrical side of her. Another song that showcases her amazing lyricism is "My Tears Ricochet" - from the Long Pond Sessions. The song is about her masters being sold to her biggest enemy, and you can tell it affects her emotionally while singing it.

Taylor Swift is one of the best story tellers!!
@khills8 ай бұрын
This is a murder ballad. If you're not familiar with the genre, I definitely recommend a real deep dive into it! It'll put this song in a lot more context; So, murder ballads are, as the name implies, ballads about a murder. They follow a traditional ballad format, meaning that they’re a narrative song about an event, and they generally tell the story of events leading up to a murder - normally a dude singing about killing a woman, often “the love of his life,” for some perceived, typically false, crime. (There’s a LOT of “stalking is love” behavior in them, too.) But you can also get the songs being sung from the victim’s perspective… or the victim’s ghost as she comes for revenge. Rarely, you can get a third person omniscient narration of events. In the last 60-odd years, women have started to take the murder ballad back, and their narratives tend to be ones of revenge - typically revenge for domestic abuse. In the last 20-30, it’s slipped out of country music and bled across all genres. For classic murder ballads, try the Old World English ballad The Godport Tragedy, or the Americana version of the same song, Pretty Polly. For other classic Americana songs, try Lloyd Price’s “Stagger Lee,” Wayon Jenninsgs, "Cedartown, Georgie" or Lyle Lovett, “L.A. County.” Sting wrote “I Hung My Head,” which was recorded by Johnny Cash. For a more contemporary take on murder ballads, try "Where the Wild Roses Grow" by Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds or a number of songs by Eminem, including “‘97 Bonnie and Clyde” and “Kim,” “Dance with the Devil” by Immortal Technique (an example of a third person telling the story), and of course, “Thunder Rolls” by Garth Brooks (especially the live performance with the fourth verse). For a couple more takes on feminist murder ballads like No Body, No Crime, there's Wanda Jackson’ “The Box it Came In,” “Caleb Meyer” by Gillian Welch, "Goodbye, Earl" by The Chicks, and "Pretty Little One” by Steve Martin (yes, that one) and the Steep Canyon Rangers with Edie Brickell. Enjoy!
@Jay-dn2fc8 ай бұрын
Thank you for this! I’ll definitely do deep dive, this is so fascinating!
@khills8 ай бұрын
@@Jay-dn2fc You’re welcome! My default answer is a little longer, but I trimmed it here since I wasn’t sure if anyone would be interested. Here’s the rest of what I normally write, just to help that deep dive get started: Murder ballads are split into three other broad categories: Old World, Americana, and American Old West… but we have almost no examples of the latter because they were largely passed down either via broadsides no one kept or told orally in a very small geographic area. Old World ballads come from Germanic roots and are found across England, Scotland, and Scandinavia - these songs almost always have a mystical or supernatural element. Americana songs, on the other hand, often use the same musical score and even themes of Old World ballads, but the supernatural elements are removed. Instead of a ghost seeking revenge, it’s someone’s family. And Americana itself is a broad category. It includes all the folk genres, including all the country genres, but we also have gangsta rap (Eminem in particular) and soul/r&b (Macy Gray) as well as narcocorridos and, some argue, teenage “cry and die” love songs of the 50s and 60s are offshoots on the theme. Have fun! 😊
@robertthompson72428 ай бұрын
so you know, Taylor was a huge crime show fan; back around 2009, CSI brought her in for an episode (as the murdered teen); she named one of her cats for a tv detective (Olivia Benson). The boating license detail is probably real; her parents had a dock at their house in Hendersonville (Nashville suburb).

If you’re up for a little change of pace, you should check out ‘My Tears Ricochet’ and ‘Exile’ (featuring Bon Iver), recorded at Long Pond Studios. They’re both very powerful/emotional songs that really showcase her true talent singing and writing her own lyrics and music. I would love to see you cover those 😊 *both videos are on here and are of the actual studio recordings so you can see her emotions while singing. It’s beautiful.

You need to see the rock version of We are never ever getting back together . Then there is you’re losing me, there are just so many songs and i love that she is re-recording her earlier albums (Taylor’s version) so she will have control over her discography singing as hell her rights to her masters of her songs were sold out from under her for 140 million to scooter Braun and then sold them to Shamrock for 405 million so she’s taking back the masters first because they are Taylor’s version
