I am now 72. I heard this song maybe in the 1980's, but never heard anything else. Like you, I'm just discovering Rush in 2023. It wasn't the music that first captivated me, it was their interviews, their RNR HOF speech, and the 3 of them having dinner together, (all available on KZbin). Then I heard Limelight, YYZ and Spirit of Radio live and I couldn't believe what I was seeing and hearing from 3 guys. How I missed them for over 40 years, I don't know. But I also missed Thin Lizzy and Metallica, both of whom I've discovered in the last couple of years, too. Retirement has its benefits. Now, if my hearing will only last a few more years!

The Dinner video is great, it really shows who they are (were in Neils case-RIP). Just three silly goofballs who happened to be extremely gifted musicians. While I enjoy all their interviews, it's my favorite non-musical experience of the group.

I think they are technically considered ‘prog rock’, at least in the 70s & 80s. If you liked that I suggest (off the same album), Limelight. But just about anything off ‘Moving Pictures’ was great. Rush in their prime. For the record, the little hair I have left is getting pretty salt & pepper. I’m jealous because you actually have hair. Lucky you.

🙋🏿‍♀️ May I suggest 'The Spirit of Radio' next. 🤔 4 decades of music is hard to pin down to just 1 genre of Music. 😏 There are folks from the 70's who saw them open for Kiss with songs off their 1st Album who couldn't stand the later 80's Synth stuff. Folks from the 80's who adore this period of Synth Rush 😒 but don't go for their early stuff. Fans who can't stand Geddys voice but love their instrumentals (YYZ Live in Rio, La Villa Strangiato). Those that don't like radio friendly Rush but go for their long epic pieces (2112, Xanadu, Natural Science). And those that go for the Books 😆 literally! Cygnus Book 1: The Voyage & Books 2: Hemispheres. 😉 Oh and they have a few Reggae tinged songs. 🤗 So much to choose from! 🥰🐰

A lot of people will tell you that Rush is progressive rock but they are actually considered the fathers of progressive metal. Imagine if King Crimson and Led Zeppelin had a baby.
@BalokLives
@BalokLives Жыл бұрын
It's because the term metal became associated with a different harder sound throughout the years. If you came up in the 60's and 70's like I did and perhaps OP, then you remember. But as Metal evolved Rush no longer fit into that category, so they stopped trying to put them in one and changed it to Progressive Rock. Anything they couldn't categorize they put into Progressive Rock. But I always said that Rush shouldn't be put into a box at all. They are like no one else. They were Rush.
@compnnburns8831
@compnnburns8831 Жыл бұрын
their music spans 4 decades so their music does change as you would expect from a progressive band . You will absolutely adore "Spirit of radio" from their January 1980 masterpiece album Permanent Waves . constantly played around the world even today and probably their greatest hit (Rush did not write songs for the radio as such). If Tom Sawyer has you hooked Spirit of radio will mean you will get reeled in and consumed in what will be the most epic music journey of your life. I am so jealous. My journey started with them in 1978 when I accidentally purchased their album a farewell to kings another brilliant album. You'll find you will end up running out of superlatives to critique the holy triumvirate as they are known to their cult following and the most decent humble likeable human beings to boot.

Best rock band ever and the best live shows. Rush was what happened when a top ten all time bassist who was also the singer and keyboardist and a top ten all time lead guitarist were joined by the world's greatest rock drummer/percussionist who also wrote intelligent and thought provoking lyrics. These three guys were amazing right out of the box and only improved in the 40 plus years they stayed together, check out Working Man live in Cleveland when they were pushing 60 to see what I mean. Subbed for more Rush. 😊

Genre probably “prog metal.” Progressive in the sense of transitions, time signature changes, melodic elements passed from one instrument to another. Metal meaning progressive rock with a harder edge. Astonishing that all that multi layered music is made by three guys. Check out YYZ, La Villa Strangiato (instrumentals), Xanadu (12 minute epic), Limelight, Red Barchetta.

Welcome to RUSH! The greatest Prog Rock group of all time. They are in the top 5 of all time consecutive gold/platinum albums. Considering the Beatles and Rolling Stones are 1 and 2, they are in pretty good company. Never had a number 1 hit, but their following is unbelievable. Many of their songs require you to think, which is why some people don't like them. Neil Peart is considered to be one of the greatest drummers in Rock...... I suggest you listen to their breakthrough album, 2112. This will give you a good sense of their direction. The first side of the album is one song, with several movements. Also, their final album, Clockwork Angels, ends with a very thought provoking song, The Garden. Neil passed away in January of 2022.....enjoy.

There isn't really a 'typical' Rush song, unless you're going be era. They played for 40+ years and their style changed over time; sometimes it was heavier and grungier, sometimes there were more synthesizers, sometimes it was more Blues-y, and once they even attempted rap in a song. The commonality is that, with the exception of the first album, all three musicians stayed the same and their lyrics tend to be more on the intellectual side. They also have great chemistry and skill, yet remain humble and are more of an "everyman's band." Tom Sawyer was immensely popular and is a complicated song, but I don't think it was their best. But if you liked it, you'll probably like their early 80s albums. Definitely try out some of their other stuff. Be warned though -- the mid 80s songs were polarizing for fans. Some loved the heavier synths with guitars seemingly as an afterthought, and others hated it and just try to pretend it never happened. You might want to try Limelight from the same album (Moving Pictures), Subdivisions from their Signals album, or YYZ live in Rio. YYZ is an instrumental also from the Moving Pictures album, but the Rio performance is about thirty years later.

Sept 30 1974 I am 16 in a rock band and I am teaching myself how to play keys, so I buy a ticket to see Billy Preston. I think it was like $8...a little high we thought.(my band mates) There were two other bands, we had never heard of them, opening for Billy. It was "stadium seating", we were front row stage right. I could reach out and touch the stage. So the lights finally go down and this blazing guitar riff starts...."Finding My Way"...Rush comes out and rocks the stadium. I was feet away from Alex most of the night since they were the first band and their equipment was in front of the next band to come out before Billy Preston. What a show. Rush made a lot of new fans that night. The other band? Well this 8 foot fire breathing demon looking bass player was in front of me for their show....haha

I'm sure among the 533 likes someone has told you they are a great Rock Band Trio From Toronto. In there many years together their was only 1 line up change. Very early in the bands life (not sure if it was before their first album or not, but Geddy Lee stepped in as the Bass player, Keyboardist and lead singer. The Drummer Neil Peart (RIP) is considered one of the greatest rock band drummers ever (1 or 2), He also wrote most if not all the bands lyrics. He was know for multiple time and key changes in a song. Sometimes as many as 12. They drew crowds in the 10's of thousands in their 50 yrs performance career. Even though there were inducted into the Rock and Roll of fame, they never had a song break into the top 80 of the Billboard Charts. Neil battling a terminal illness recorded about 10 minutes of drum tracks for a buddy and then collapsed and within 2 hr's later was dead. Definitely one of the leaders in Progressive Rock!

Then you need to go back and do fly by night, the trees, la Villa strangiato, working man, and 2112. Then move forward to the 90s and do dreamline, bravado, roll the bones, and driven. Then top it off with some 200's Rush with Headlong flight, BU2B, and the Garden.

Howard Stern loves to stir the pot about who the best rock drummer of all time was, but he is completely ignorant. Hands down, its Professor Peart. He laid the beats and wrote most of the lyrics and music. We lost a genius, but he will never be forgotten.

I've never really listened to rock bands. I liked Talking Heads in the 80's and REM in the 90's, but we were Pentecostal in my family, so I was not "allowed" to listen to rock, really. I have mostly only listened to pop music, Elton, Billly Joel, Barbra Streisand. I have not listened to many rock bands at ALL. Especially if they were "heavy" metal. My friends and family growing up called it all "devil music". Seriously.

Why is it always Tom Sawyer? Why not Xanadu, The Necromacer or Bytor and the Snow Dog

I just stumbled upon your channel and reaction. Soooooo how is it that you've never heard this? What were you listening to back in the late 70's and early 80's??? Just curious. THIS SONG WAS EVERYWHERE. BTW, all of RUSH is great. Not a typical band that sang about sex, drugs and rock n roll. Much deeper meanings and stellar music from this trio.

@@citywoof Well that makes perfect sense. I was raised a rock n roll kid. Been to more concerts than I can remember. I'm 56 now and have slowed down quite a bit but before Covid I was averaging 35 to 75 bands a year. I too enjoyed the 80's new wave movement and was able to see the best of them back then as well. Thank you for responding you cute Silver Bear! 😘

@@citywoof That makes perfect sense. I grew up in Pentecostal family too. My dad tried to outlaw the music but just gave up. So I spent my high school years listening to Rush, Kansas, Boston, and U2.
