I woke up to this song being played in the ward, in a US military hospital, 3 days after being critically wounded in Vietnam, happy to be alive and longing to be close to my fiancé. We married 3 years later and just celebrated our 50th wedding anniversary

The "Carpenters" are a brother & sister duo that were extremely popular all through the 1970's and early 1980's. They had numerous hit albums and singles racking up over 90 million in record sales. Richard is the songwriter/music arranger, plays the piano and sings harmonies. Karen (a contralto) sings in her sultry lyrical voice and plays the drums. The pressures of the music business caused quite the problem for both siblings Richard took a hiatus to get clean of Quaaludes (successfully) and Karen developed an eating disorder (Anorexia Nervosas). Karen died of heart failure in 1983 due to the Anorexia. The publicity surrounding her death increased public awareness of eating disorders. Until her death almost nobody had even heard of eating disorders. Her death helped to save the lives of many people especially young girls and teenagers by finally making the public aware that there was a problem with negative body image.

Richard wrote some songs but most of their hits were covers or written by others like Paul Williams and Burt Bacharach. This song was previously recorded by Richard Chamberlain, Dionne Warwick, and Dusty Springfield.

@@bengilbert7655 According to the movie.'The Karen Carpenter Story' The words to 'Close to You' were written by Bacharach and given to Herb Albert who handed it to Richard and asked him to arrange it and ready to perform at a party he was having. All of Richard's studio recordings were masterfully overdubbed using only his and Karen's voices for the harmony. Sometimes laying down up to 6 tracks. tracks.

As well as being a one-of-a-kind singer, Karen was a superb drummer and considered herself a drummer who sang. Her brother Richard is the pianist. This song was written by the iconic Burt Bacharach and became the first major hit for this duo. Richard wrote and arrangement many of their later hits. Karen left this earth in 1983 at age 32 from the eating disorder, anorexia nervosa and is greatly missed still.

I'm so glad that my old high school, after they renovated it, finally set-up a tribute to The Carpenters. They both went to Downey High. Karen was in the band too. I remember the first day of band camp I saw her name on a plaque in the band room and I fan-girled a bit. My senior year I was nosing around the sheet music room and found old band pictures and she was in them. I remember thinking "Why are these not up on the wall? It's Karen Carpenter's band picture for crying out loud." Richard donated money to the school to have that tribute to his sister put up. They aren't the only known musicians who went to my school but their presence in Downey is very significant. I hope you do more of The Carpenters. Especially "We've Only Just Begun". Richard heard the hook of that song from a bank commercial so he decided to write it fully. They had two apartment complexes in Downey. One called "Close To You" and the other "We've Only Just Begun". It was close to their parents' house. Where, unfortunately, Karen Carpenter passed away at.

Hello MRBOYD, I have been watching some of your videos and just subscribed. I loved the Carpenters in the seventies, they appeared on all the variety shows of the time. Karen had an issue where she thought she was fat and tried all sorts of diets. It came down to that eatting disorder (I don't know how to spell Bollemia, I believe this is close). Back then I'm not sure if there was a name for it, but she got so sick and was in and out of the hospital so much. Eventually we lost here, there's no way to know what she and her brother could have accomplished in music had she lived. I'm sure someone else wrote all this stuff I just felt compelled to put these things down, having them in my memories. She was a great singer and drummer, her brother wrote most of the songs , played keyboards, and sang harmonies. What a great duo. Thanks for all my Rock brothers and sisters who have read this. Brother Gary

Karen Carpenter had an iconic voice, and her brother, Richard, did all of the arrangements for their songs, and played piano and provided harmonies for their songs. Most of them were Burt Bacharach songs. She struggled with anorexia that eventually killed her, but her death brought about an awareness about eating disorders that probably saved many lives. Such a tragedy that she never saw herself as the beautiful voice, and person, that the rest of us did.

Karen Carpenter is one of the most greatest female singers of all times hands down. Karen Carpenter sounds just as good live as she did on any of their vinyl recordings, no auto-tune and no back woods tricks just raw talent.

Love the Carpenters. Also love the bumpy hair. Those were called "falls" back in those days. You just kind of stuck the hairpiece on with clips. My sister used to wear one

I was introduced to this song through Frank Ocean’s cover of Stevie Wonder’s cover of this song. All three hold a special place on my life

Karen sang all her songs brilliantly. She s one of the greatest female voices ever in music. Her brother plays piano and arranges the songs that they both wrote. She passed away at just 31 or 32 years old. Over 40 years ago but she left so many beautiful songs and videos for the rest of the world to enjoy. Greatest female voice I ve ever heard. She lived through her songs which many were haunting and sad. She was very popular and loved worldwide.

The Carpenters! Love them. Still incorporate their songs in my playlists. This song was very popular for weddings once upon a year so you’d be right about the romance. I often wonder what other wonderful gems of music they would’ve done had Karen not gotten sick. So sad.

Her and her brother had changed gears and have become more the way they are on close to you, that might have been the song that put him so far up that when she died it really rocked everybody it was so hard to believe

Proving again you can quickly identify talent. It’s hard to go wrong with a Carpenter’s song. Wait until you see her playing drums. Thank you!
