The Devil Went Down to Georgia was released in 1979. It became popular. Charlie Daniels RIP was an awesome fiddle player. He burned that fiddle up and many times played the song with only on string left on his bow. It they show a close up of his bow you can see string’s flying. Thank you for this reaction.

I’ve seen a video of him shredding that bow. Awesome sight to see. I believe it was shown on the local news when announcing his passing. Or could have been here on YT.

When it's played like that it's called a fiddle. It's the same instrument, it's how it's played as to what you call it.

There were two versions, so technically two release dates. This version, with "son of a b*" intact was the original. There was a radio edit version with "gun" that was used in ghe soundtrack for Urban Cowboy, and ironically was almost never played on radio. They all played the original and gave the FCC fits.

This is a major crossover hit that is still played on both classic country and classic rock radio stations today. Charlie Daniels is a member of the Country Music Hall of Fame, passed away in 2020.

There is a definite Bluegrass influence in the CDB's music. There is a sequel to this song, approved by Charlie but not including him. It has a whole raft of younger "outlaw country" types telling what happens when the Devil takes Johnny's challenge, comes back to Georgia, and tries again. Three guesses as to the creatve title of this tribute. I saw the Band once due to simple luck. I was at a county fair and there was the sign saying Charlie Daniels Band. Usually, I would see that 2 hours after the last show, but this one time, I had a little luck. They gave a full on show to that small venue just like they did at big ones like this.

I saw Charlie Daniels and Travis Tritt in concert (for my first time) in Oklahoma in December of 2019. Charlie was so dope and could still shred on his fiddle. He expressed his love for the USA, its citizens, and especially its men and women in uniform protecting our freedom and there was not one dry eye in the theater. He also saw a young boy in the front row who was dancing to the music and Charlie walked right over to him in the middle of a song and gave his bow to the boy. Pretty awesome souvenir and memory for that youngster. Now that he has passed I’m deeply saddened but also thankful that I decided to buy that ticket and drive from Texas to Oklahoma to see him perform. As I sat there just a few rows back I was amazed at how spry he was for being in his 80s. It just goes to show you that life is precious, health is paramount, and every day is a gift. RIP Charlie!

All of the songs he was mentioning in the chorus - including the one you recognized - are lyrics from traditional folk songs: Fire on the Mountain Run, boys, run The house of the Rising Sun (This following is all the same song) Chicken in the bread pan a-pecking out dough; Granny does your dog bite; no, chile, no. The devil and his band played modern - for the time - music. Johnny played traditional music.

The Animals. House of the Rising Sun. Devil's in the house of the rising sun (House of ill-repute, a bordello, whorehouse). It's not a violin. It's a fiddle. Violins play classical, opera, rock, pop, even Rhythm and blues, but country, western, folk, bluegrass etc. it's a fiddle. The name of the instrument is determined by the type of music played.
@amberfuchscia709

Michael Hendricks...House of the Rising Sun is actually an American folk song with roots going as far back as the late 1600's. The first recorded version was, I believe in the 1930's.

I probably knew all that before you were born. I mentioned the Animals version because theirs is the most well-known and often referenced. Kinda like people refer to Charlie Pride's "Miller's Cave" although Charlie never wrote music and certainly wasn't alive when the first verses of the song were written, probably wasn't yet born decades later, when the 123rd verse was added, But it is the most well-known rendition. Nobody really knows who wrote many old folk songs just as the originator of many old blues and jazz tunes are unknown. The Animal's version of "House..." is one of the best, I've heard, but there were various country versions released earlier. Jack Scott's version is excellent.

I would also say man you should check out the studio cut of this from the 70s at some point because this is a live performance and it's awesome that you could see the mood and all the people and what they look like and live performances are awesome man but the Fidelity really isn't very good compared to what you would hear on the album where you can hear every bit of virtuosity on the fiddle and really with all of them, including that part that you correctly identified as kind of a 70s Funk feeling when they do that guitar Rift for when the devil is playing. But the thing is, on the album cut, you can really hear how creepy and weird and experimental music style that's going on for the seventies anyway, to make it sound like the devil. You couldn't hardly hear it in this recording

An interesting note about the terminology here, when a violin is played in country music or hillbilly or bluegrass, it is never referred to as a violin but rather a fiddle. And you don't see it here, but in the really early days of fiddle, they wouldn't even tuck it under their chin like classical violinists do, they would play it in the crook of their arm. I guess they felt like they were just fiddling around on it rather than playing serious classical music or something.

If you want to hear and also rebellious song but one that's super chill and really really funny at the same time at all so matter-of-fact and really quite real about the reality of life. It's called, Long Haired Country Boy. It's basically he just wants to sit out in the woods with his dog and fish in a pond and get high and ignore all the television preachers and the politicians and all that kind of stuff. But it's just so well-written, and it's a slow plotting thing which perfectly fits being so laid-back like you're in a rocking chair, kicking back and just basically giving a big middle finger to all the bullshit that goes on in this world. It was also a favorite song of his fans along with this one. And please keep in mind, what you're seeing here is he is doing this many many years after it was initially a hit on the radio, so you're seeing an older man doing this. And it's great, don't get me wrong, I just think it always helps to know the context. When he was originally performing this he would have been much younger and way more energetic.

Hip Country Hop, lol lol. Right on. Did you know there was a brief thing that happened much later on, maybe in 2008 still kind of exist today but it was called hick-hop. And it was called that because the urban influence of hip-hop and rap by then was really becoming quite common across all groups of people especially young kids, and so as the suburbs expand it out and sometimes people that really into hip-hop would get together with their counterparts that really came from a rural existence which somehow they combined together to have the elements of hip-hop with like hillbilly and Country and it created this really interesting blend. So yeah, you were definitely onto something with your description there.
