I believe you were trying to get out "barbershop quartet". The Doobie Brothers were close but as far as I know never tried for or managed the "fifth voice" a real barbershop quartet can do. (That's when their voices' harmonies merge into what sounds like a fifth singer's voice.)

The vocalist here is Patrick Simmons, which is the second one from the right. I think this is before Michael McDonald joined the band. He's whos voice sounds kind of cottony. He had a solo album with a good song called, "I Keep Forgettin' (Every Time You're Near)."

The voice you're looking for is MICHAEL MCDONALD. Literally, one of the most recognizable voices in the business. The original singer for The DB was Tom Johnson ("Listen To The Music", "China Grove", & "Long Train Runnin'") "Black Water" was lead by Patrick Simmons (guitar), who wrote it & was the first of the two of two hits in 1975. 🌟🌟🌟Michael McDonald: who had sang with Steely Dan joined as a fill in for Tom but his vocals, well, they kept him. ("Takin It To The Streets", "Minute By Minute", & "What A Fool Believes" - which you heard.) I will say this - hardcore DB fans seem to gravitate to Tom Johnson. Everyone always loves an original, right? Michael's solo career is legendary: "KEEP FORGETTIN" Lots of people have sampled it. The one every immediately thinks of is the very famous song "Regulate" by Warren G & Nate Dogg. It's a must hear after this even though they stole it. Yep, they had to pay up. "Yo Mo Be There" w/ James Ingram "On My Own" w/Patty LaBelle "Sweet Freedom" All songs mentioned are big songs, Van & should be reacted to. Tom has the original DB sound & they are bangers. Michael brought a different sound & they are hits. Solo - he kills it. There's too many songs to name where he is background. Believe me, now that you know the voice, you'll know it when you hear it. 😉

When I was a kid, my alarm clock was set to "wake up to music" (radio) and almost every morning this song was on rotation when my alarm went off. A great song to wake up to. There are two iterations of The Doobie Brothers: the Tom Johnson years and the Michael McDonald years. Yes, Tom rejoined the group after he recovered from his illness, but the difference in sound between the two leads is palpable. I MUCH prefer the TJ years. Their early stuff is just amazing. And this is my favorite DB song by far. Thanks for the reaction. I loved watching your eyes during the outro.

I agree, the TJ years were great...because they were one of the groundbreaking bands who created the standards others have since, tried to meet. There are so many elements that went into the DB, that made them the iconic band they are. When MM came in, he saved the band. His lead, his songs, the inspiration that there would be DB music still, yet and again. In the time between when TJ left and MM started, the DB sucked as a live band. Understandable, and for a while they had the reputation of being a studio only band. I like all the iterations of the DB. MM evolved their music, refined their sound. I’m particularly fond of a DB horn player, the late Cornelius Bumpus. After Corny left the DB he played with Steely Dan for many years. Like the times they’re from, a point came when they were forced to adapt and change to just to survive. Thankfully, it clicked. They more than survived, they flourished with a bold new sound, while retaining the charm of the DB. One of my all time favs!

Your parents sound like they were excellent parents! Any parents who loved the Doobie Brothers and actually took their kids to three of their concerts are alright in my book! 🎸🎸🎸 My parents were as square as square could be. My dad only listened to old time fiddle music from the Maritimes and my mom was too timid to sort herself out over music, afraid that my dad would have a fit, so they hardly listened to anything except country radio. And what I mentioned. I grew up in the 60s and 70s (born in 1958) on Motown and rock. What years those were for music!!! About the year 2000 or so my mom told me that she actually liked Elvis Presley back in the 50s, 60s and 70s. You could have pushed me over with a feather. She said my dad would have freaked out if she listened to him so she did it vicariously through my sisters' Elvis records. As I said, my dad was very square. In fact, that is an insult to squares. He was just a hill-billy red-neck for the most part, who thought he knew everything but hardly knew anything in reality. It is sad to have a parent like that. He hated rock and roll and called them "long haired hippie Christers!" With a curse. Anyway, as you can see I did not get along with him and didn't even much like him.

They are kind of singing at the end "a round." It's a type of harmony where one member sings the beginning of a verse and then a few beats later a response is played and this is done over again where the second time around starts before the response is finished. The best known version of a round is Row Row your Boat.

The Black one is Tiran Porter, he doesn't sing lead. But he provides the most memorable bass lines! The bass on "Long Train Runnin'" (sung by Tom Johnston) and "Takin' it to the Streets" (sung by Michael McDonald) will stick with you forever.

Somehow The Doobie Brothers, no matter who was leading the group or singing, made music you want to listen to. I mean music wise and lyric meaning wise. Their 2010 album has just as many musical and lyric meaningful songs on it as their earlier works. I have not bought their latest album, but will, even if I have not had a chance to hear any selections: They are that good, 50+ years later!

I saw them with my parents in 1978 I think Eddie Money was the opening act. It was at the New Haven CT colosseum. What a great concert at 11 years old. There were tons of beach balls and frisbees ,but what they had the most of was weed. Joints were being passed around from person to person. Never smell it before and asked what the smell was..They just laughed. Maybe they had some too. That was the original members I believe at that time I believe. Great music. Brings back soo many memories

You must hear the Doobie Brothers' REAL LOVE, LEAD BY Michael McDonald. There's never a Black soloist on any of their recordings, as I can recall. However, the flavor the one (or two) blacks deliver, has been critical for the group and lasting. You must hear - It Keeps You running - among my favorites. Also- Taking it to The Streets -- and What a Fool Believes. This group is OFF the CHAIN! Their choice of lyrics, by Michael and other collaborators --His flavor and genius on the piano, His vocal MAGIC can never be repeated- a Legendary lead/Michael and legendary backup. Thanks for keeping the music I have loved and appreciated for decades!

Listen for this acapella gem: "I wanna honkey tonk, honkey tonk, honkey tonk... with you all night long." The song is one of the best examples of vocal musical rounds ever recorded by a rock band. By the end, there must be eight or ten syncopated voices some going in perfectly different directions. It deservedly sailed to the top of the charts and stayed there for a LONG time. Way before Michael McDonald, these dudes had a list of radio/album hits as long as your leg. I say Tom Johnston is/has been the hardest working man in rock.
