1979. I was 19, living and working at a ski resort. I worked nights. This Album was on my turntable. I put it on every evening when I got up for work. The first song I always played was Minute by Minute. I went skiing every day, every morning after work. Good Memories for an old hippie ✌🇨🇦🏒🎶🎷🎸

This song only gets better with age. And if you take some time to understand the lyrics it takes on a new dimension that will reveal its true genius. I can’t think of another song that so effectively tugs your emotions so powerfully in two opposing directions. From one bar to the next… one line to the next… even simultaneously, it is upbeat, hopeful, inspirational, and then completely emotionally devastating. It leaves it to the listener to decide. It is a musical masterpiece masquerading as a pop song.

It's a great line, though I am fairly sure you've slightly misrepresented it. I can't look it up right now (don't want to stop the video!), but this is what I think he sings: "What a fool believes he sees No wise man has the power to reason away." Better, no?

@@TheoZoffrok The line is "What a fool believes, THE wise man has the power to reason away." Think about it (or just Google it lol) the line before says: "As she rises to her apology ANYBODY else would surely know..." How could "NO wise man" be able to reason away what "anybody else" would surely know? The line is contrasting a fool, and a wise man.
@TheoZoffrok
@TheoZoffrok 2 жыл бұрын
@@thomaspaine7107 I could not disagree more. First of all, as far as google is concerned, yes, the first search result brings up the version you claim; however, the next 3 or 4 all give the version I believe to be correct. As to your interpretation, again, I quite disagree: *surely* the message is if a fool really wants to believe something, no one, no matter how wise, can disabuse them. I honestly think this makes far more sense. This is from one of the lyric websites: Punctuation is important here. The key phrases are "What a fool believes he sees, no wise man has the power to reason away" and "What seems to be is always better than nothing." Translated, that means, "There's no point trying to reason with a deluded fool. He sees what he wants to see, and you'll never convince him that he's wrong. But hey, maybe he's HAPPIER with his delusion. For a lonely fool, a fantasy love may be better than no love at all."
@thomaspaine7107
@thomaspaine7107 2 жыл бұрын
@@TheoZoffrok I agree that the way you have described the scene is the only way to understand the line as you do. The lyric you, and I are discussing is a maxim, and it is summing up the line immediately preceding it. This lyric is not describing an actual discussion between a fool, and a wise man. Both the fool, and the wise man are hypothetical in this line. For the record, I don't think that referring to the subsequent lyric (What seems to be...) aids your argument in any way. That line does sum up the mindset of the fool though. We agree on that. Many people interpret the lyrics like yourself, and I am not frustrated by that. I am curious if a live version of the song would help us determine the original intent of the songwriter?

My uncles- bless them- took it upon themselves to try to teach me about life and how men could be. When I got boobs early, they rented a projector - pre VCR days- and Mae West movies and said "Boys/men are going to look. This will always be part of your life. Own it and control it." They also played this song to tell me lots of boys/men are going to imagine relationships with you. That is on them. You can be kind but you don't owe them anything just because you were polite to them and they wanted more.

This devastating song becomes real to life when one fully digests the storyline expressed in the haunting lyrics. We have all known a fool or three who adjust reality by adding sufficient sugar so bitter pills can be masked as candy when necessary. But those with no skin in the game see the obvious in a instant. Grammy Song of the Year 1980 and well worthy of the honor.

He was the voice in the 70's. Van, believe it or not, the truth is my uncle, Jerome Jones, was the session musician for the Doobies and I met Michael MacDonald at 12 years old in Detroit, MI. It was at Capitol Records in Detroit. It was my aunt and uncle's wedding day. He took me to the studio to meet them and I said, who's that black man singing. He said that's no. black man, that's Michael Macdonald, I said you're lying, I don't believe you. He said, go down the hall and we crossed paths as I walked down the hall. That was when his hair was white. Now he is in his 70s. But that day changed my life. He was so cool because I wrote him and he wrote back when I was in college and sent me an autographed picture that I hung in my room when I went to the University of North Carolina School of the Arts from 1985-1989.

Michael McDonald was everywhere in the 70's and 80's. Everyone wanted his voice on their record. Christopher Cross - "Ride Like the WInd", Kenny Loggins "This is It", are a couple big hits of other artist with him singing backup. And of course he had a great solo career after the Doobies. "I Keep Forgetting'", and "Sweet Freedom" are probably his two most famous solo tracks. You'll probably recognize the music from "I Keep Frgetting" from a hip-hop song.

It's a slower groove but "It Keeps You Runnin'" is a great tune (recommended by many others here) but one not listed yet that I love is "Take Me In Your Arms (Rock Me)". This was originally written by Motown's enormously successful team, Holland-Dozier-Holland" and is a fast-paced, soulful treat. Michael Mcdonald was very instrumental in elevating the Doobie Brothers. He is one of the transcendent voices of music, that many people don't know. Listen to, " This is it" by Kenny Loggins. His voice on that track is undeniable.

What an intelligent young man, with wisdom of of a much older man. There are powers trying to keep us apart !!!! I am a 55 yr old white man, and love to see my young brothers, black white or brown ! Keeping it real, and not falling for the attempts at racial divide. There is power in music, old or new. When I see the younger generation such as yourself, enjoying, understanding and truly feeling my generations music. It helps me feel, I ain't too old yet. I call everyone brother, we are all truly brothers and sisters. And we all need to act like it ! And brother, you can break bread with me any day ! Your attitude, and intelligence, love for music, comedy and people is truly inspiring ! Would love to hang with you, and the people in your life that inspired you most ! Peace and love my brother !!! Peace and love !!!!

Michael McDonald sang lead on this (he’s in the middle); but the tall guy behind him with the mustache sings lead on other songs like “China Grove” and “Take me in your arms”. Some of their hits were “Minute by Minute”; “Taking it to the Streets”, “Long Train Runnin’”, and “It keeps you runnin’”! 👍❤️👏
