I visited the UK in 2007 and can confirm. I was familiar with this song (Canadian here btw) but having it close down clubs and everyone knowing all the words was surreal. It actually made me like the song way more than I ever would have. I don't think the song ever did get the appreciation it deserves in North America.

First of all, I love your family and I want to come hang out with you all! 😁 This is a very catchy song and an interesting video, but the lyrics are a little too close to a description of a couple of my previous relationships!
