There was never a difference whether a group was black or white, at least in my house. Born in “57,” next to Asbury Park, so I saw lots of artists at the Paramount and Convention Hall. I watched Where the Action Is, on television, along with, American Bandstand and Soul Train, and my parents encouraged it. We watched Ed Sullivan, and saw all the latest acts, of every color. My Dad was a Cop and he was at the Asbury Park riots, and came home telling me that when people are ignored for hundreds of years, riots can happen. He and my Mom had black friends throughout their lives, and even had a black friend that was a club owner, and so the often went to their club. What the hell has happened to us? It is just so sad.

Kathy here - I am a 68-year-old white woman, not that color matters, but this is the music my parents listened to, danced to, had parties in the house and took the furniture out to the garage and open up the living room for friends to dance. My dad would put on this album, let me stand on his feet and slow dance, before me and my sister had to go to bed. What memories this brings back. So glad to see the younger generation discover music from the "old" days! Yes, their harmonies were great, and they were one of the most popular bands in their day. The were actually considered to be a "rock n roll band" back then. LOL Thanks for your reaction and loved YOU actually reacting to it also. You need to check out Smoke Gets in your eyes, it's amazing.

From an old white guy living in a rural area, I completely agree with you that you need to do more reactions to black artists from the 50's - 80's. There must be 500 famous black artists with 1000 famous songs in 3 or 4 diff genre's of music during those 4 decades. Both black and white music was just incredible for those 4 decades.

Oh yes. I'd love to see Twon do the Carpenters recording of the 1938 big band ballad standard "I Can Dream, Can't I" from 1975, for example. For a guy who's all of 21, that would be a double timewarp, because 1975 is 46 years ago and then the song was 37 years older than that...BTW the Platters often recorded songs from that era as well, beautifully, carefully written songs that stand the test of time...

Most establishments had separate bathrooms for clientele and the kitchen staff (who were mostly people of color). Black artists that performed in these places were treated very poorly. The Platters came around just prior to the Civil Rights movement. A fabulously talented group who's popularity transcended race; which was a huge statement at that time about their talent.
@davisworth51143 жыл бұрын
They were treated poorly in the South, the only segregated facilities were down South, I have no doubt that Platters were paid well for this performance, they were all over radio and TV. The black community was better off then in many ways, today is much worse, black families are atomized today.
@TheDivayenta3 жыл бұрын
@@davisworth5114 just seeing this. There was plenty of segregation up North. Growing up in New York I remember my Black friends were not allowed in the community swimming pools and were barred from buying their own homes. These “ covenants” were artfully buried - so not as obvious.and those are only two examples. Read about what happened in Boston when busing was instituted. Mob riots and destruction by white people against Black folks just trying to go to school.

You only hold a people back when you are scared of their potential and you are insecure.
@davisworth51143 жыл бұрын
@@TheDivayenta I grew up in Seattle and spent a lot of time around people of all races at ball games, riding trains, and playing sports when I was a kid. There were no segregated facilities. I never saw a single racial incident back in the day, and I never saw or heard any racist acts when I was in Army training down South and in Vietnam. You don't have to lecture me, I saw Satchel Paige pitch when I was a kid and I've been a blues player for fifty years and a student of black music and history. Keep it about the music, black musicians were the main reason the races started coming together in America. We know blacks are the best musicians, that's why we copy them, that's where rock and roll came from, white guys trying to play and sound black. Didn't you know that?

I came in at the end of the baby boomers era so I grew up listening to my Mom and Dad play the music of the 40s and 50s and I loved it from the moment I heard all these songs and believe me it feels really good when I see this generation hearing such beautiful music it can never be replaced or repeated either. Yes, black performers came in through the back door, could not use any facilities, and though they were loved, it was as entertainment, not necessarily as human beings. Just remember, we're talking about clubs not in the deep south, but in Hollywood, New York, Chicago, and every other big city. This movie wasn't shot in Podunk, Georgia or Bug Tussle, Mississippi. Thank goodness this all changed when I was young. It was tough times, but hard times make strong men and women and strong men and women make good times. Unfortunately, good times make weak men and women, and weak men and women again make hard times. Be strong, young man. Don't go down the rabbit hole of resenting the past. The past is what made the future you're now living. Keep making it better.

This comes from the 1956 movie "Rock Around The Clock", the man introducing The Platters here is legendary disc jockey, and radio personality Alan Freed, who made several movies like this. Alan Freed is considered a very important person as far as integration,and breaking down racial barriers in music He was one of the first people to have black and white rhythm and blues ,and rock and roll musicians both on the same concert stage, and play them on his radio shows, although concert promoters like John Hammond, another legenary figure you should know, were doing this with jazz musicians in the 1930s. The Platters are a group who were very popular in their time, and sold millions of records all over the world, in their time, but are largely forgotten by younger audiences. Check out the second Platters group from the late 60s. A more soulful group, with only two original members. Recommeded song "With This Ring".

I've heard the Platters my whole life. Zola Taylor was married Frankie Lymon from Frankie Lymon and The Teenagers. He took all her money since he got addicted to herion. And was married to multiple women at the same time. The guy who introduced them in this clip was the DJ Alan Freed who they say coined the term Rock n Roll. This is from the movie Rock Around the Clock from 1956. You take care and stay safe 😷

Classic stuff! 1955! "Only You" sat atop the U.S. R & B charts for seven weeks, rose to #5 in the overall charts and stayed there for 30 weeks (i.e. 7 months). The Platters biggest hit, however, was "Smoke Gets In Your Eyes", which went all the way to the top of the charts in 1958. They also scored hits with "The Great Pretender", "Twilight Time", and "If I Didn't Care". If you like this style of music and want to hear more like it, you must check out The Flamingos "I Only Have Eyes For You", Johnny Mathis "Chances Are" and "Misty", and Nat King Cole "Mona Lisa", "Unforgettable", and "Autumn Leaves" among many others. Also check out The Five Satins "In The Still Of The Night", The Skyliners "Since I Dont Have You", The Penguins "Earth Angel", The Dells "Oh What A Night", and The Crests "Sixteen Candles" among other similar songs from the 50's.
