Except Sting's best drummer list LOL. They were constantly at one another because Sting felt that Copeland couldn't keep steady time to save his life, and later Police shows you could see them going at one another. Not sure they ever really settled it but both appear to laugh about it today. Just don't expect to see another Police reunion. Ever. Personally, I love Copeland's drumming and I don't get what Sting was going on about...

I think Andy may had been the oldest in the band? In the 60's he played in Dantalian's Chariot who played in the same circles as Pink Floyd early on and then with Soft Machine who played mostly fusion and after that Eric Burden and the Animals.

When this came out, England was going thru a huge SKA revival thanks to 2-Tone Records. This obviously influenced bands like The Police. That doesn't take away how big of sound these 3 guys could make or how Stings song writing always kicked things up a notch!! Brilliant!

Because there was a lot of immigration to the UK from the Caribbean in the 50s and 60s, the British music scene was massively influenced by this culture. Growing up in London in the 70s and 80s, we were completely immersed in reggae and ska.

Ska influenced The Police exactly zero percent. On their first two albums they were either punk, or reggae, or both. But never once ska.

This is from 1978, 2-Tone didn't take off until 1979. I'd say reggae was the influence as the genre led by Bob Marley had become huge and The Police weren't the only band influenced as in 1977 The Clash covered Police and Thieves and even a mainstream act like 10CC had a go at reggae in 1978 with one of the biggest hits of the period with Dreadlock Holiday. We had a band from near me who released one of the best albums of 1980, UB40s Signing Off album...people forget how good a reggae band they were before they started doing all that commercial crap.

In any case, Sting IS wearing an (English) Beat tshirt in the video for "Don't Stand So Close to Me", so he was into or at least very aware of the 2-Tone ska scene by their 3rd album, and he HAD to have been aware of it before then, as those bands made national news. All of this happened in the space of the same 2-3 years.

Stuart Copeland was the driving force behind The Police. He is a student of world percussion and rhythms, middle eastern, native american and island styles. It really made their sound so interesting.

Copeland is an amazing musician. On the off chance you haven't seen it, search here on KZbin for videos he's done with all sorts of other musicians at The Grove. My favorite is "A Little More Noise" with some guy named....Neil Peart I think it is....on drums. Copeland is on guitar.

A message to you Rudy, and One Step Beyond are both ska covers of ska songs from the 60’s. All reggae is ska, but not all ska is reggae.

The Clash did a copy of Police and Thieves on their debut album. Stiff little Fingers did Johnny Was on their debut Album. Bob Marley did a song called punky reggae party as well.

@@twatinahatsmith7428 absolutely, the Police have a ska influence. Punk and ska have been intertwined since their beginnings, due to the similar stance against “the man”. Though ska is more about racial (and general) equality, where punk is more about “eat the rich” and F the system.

Police had such a unique sound for the late 70’s early 80’s. All three were incredibly talented musicians, but the drummer Stewart Copland is part of the (my) Holy Trinity of drummers of that day and age, being Stewart Copeland, John Bonham (Led Zep) and Neil Peart (Rush), in no particular order.

As you dig further into the catalog of the Police, you will find more golden gems. DEMOLITION MAN, INVISIBLE SUN, WHEN THE WORLD IS RUNNING DOWN, YOU MAKE THE BEST OF WHAT'S STILL AROUND, CANARY IN A COALMINE. The influence of Reggae was more noticeable on their first three studio albums, as is the influence of jazz that Sting loves so dearly. On his solo recordings, like his first single IF YOU LOVE SOMEBODY SET THEM FREE, it sets his imagination aflight without the constraints of the band he left behind. BE STILL MY BEATING HEART, COWBOY SONG, WHEN WE DANCED, and my personal favorite from the Lethal Weapon 3 soundtrack IT'S PROBABLY ME, with Eric Clapton, Michael Kamen, and David Sanborn reflecting Sting at the top of his game. His years serving the Police force were amazing. But moving on from the band was necessary for him in order to create without restraint music more sophisticated to nourish and satisfy not only himself but his audience. Enjoy

I have to disagree here. As Noel Gallagher once said, The Police were more of a singles band than an album band. And I have to agree. A lot of their songs sounded the same and they’ve been overplayed over the years to the point where a lot of people are sick of hearing them. Which is unfortunate because in moderation they’ve recorded some good songs.

@@rattnroll84 horns aren’t necessary. And, yes, it’s mostly, but not strictly, about tempo. Reggae is more than just “slow ska”, but shares many things, since reggae was created by ska musicians. Listen to the Slackers…they’re a fantastic NYC ska band, who’ve been playing since the early 90’s. My fav band are Canadian ska legends, the Planet Smashers. RBF and the Bosstones are great too. And if you want ska/punk, Goldfinger are imo the best.

@@andrew348 it’s not about splitting hairs…it’s about me asking and begging them to listen to ska for well over a year (probably closer to 2). Ska has been around since the late 50’s, and has influenced much. Most of what people think is “like reggae” is actually ska. And there are great ska bands all over the world. I’m just trying to get more people to listen to the type of music that I love the most.

Give a listen to Voices Inside My Head, Invisible Sun, Walking In Your Footsteps, King Of Pain and Tea In The Sahara when you are ready. You might also like Murder By Numbers which was added to the Synchronicity album when they put out the CD.

The classic! First album, with the heavy reggae influence. And love those lyrics! More Police? Heck yeah! They only had five albums, but five masterpieces. In order Outlandos d' Amour (1978) "Next to You" Regatta de Blanc (1979) "Bed's Too Big Without You" Zenyatta Mondatta (1980) "Driven to Tears" Ghost in the Machine (1981) "Invisible Sun" Synchronicity (1983) "Synchronicity II" My choice would be either "Next to You" or "Synchronicity II", but they're all good.

I literally grew up with the Police albums of the 80s - on vinyl - and listening back now to this one, something that comes up for me is of course the fact that Stewart Copeland is one of the best rock drummers in history. The Police! Heavy ska and reaggae influences. Great band and catalog. Lot of punky bands had reagge influences especially in their drum beats, jumpy lead guitar, and bass guitars.. In the UK, many punk bands and reggae/ska bands hung out at same underground clubs and infused influences on each other. In those days, reaggae, ska and punk was kind of underground. So they would book venues together at underground clubs, shared the same audience over time. Thats where you get a lot of ska punk from. The Clash is similar to The Police. You have to remember, lot of Carribbeans migrated to the UK at the time. Bringing over their music.

I remember how this sound of mixing Reggae and Rock was a nuclear blast in the music world. A lot of bands copped that sound...even RUSH did!! But to be truthful RUSH did it first at the end of "Spirit Of The Radio", but it was a small bit. The Police made it just ONE key factor to their sound...

Stewart Copeland is a very interesting guy. He is an American, but he grew up in Egypt and Lebanon -- where his father was a spy for the OSS and CIA. Then, later, his family moved to London. His father, Miles Copeland Jr., was originally in the OSS but became one of the first members of the CIA. Stewart's brother, Miles Copeland III was a music executive, who founded the record label IRS Records (which became The Police's label), and was also the band's manager. Stewart's other brother, Ian Copeland was a music booking agent, who also worked with The Police.

The story goes that after Zenyatta Mondatta's release someone gave Sting a copy of Men at Work's "Who Can It Be Now" pointing out the obvious similarities toThe Police. Sting, clever boy he is, said "ok...enough of that" and gradually eliminated reggae from their sound. Ghost In the Machine has just a touch of Caribbean rhythms on a couple of the songs , and Synchronicity has none! Amazingly so, Rush were listening to a lot of The Police at the time and both Permanent Waves "Spirit of Radio" and Moving Pictures "Vital Signs" show the reggae influence of the Police.

You haven't truly "heard" Sting until you heard his songs, Shape of My Heart(♠♣♦♥), Why Should I Cry For You, and Epilogue (Nothing 'Bout Me).😉 Sorry 'bout my absence, not that anyone should miss me. I'm just an old man with many ailments that affect my mood and availability. I could be wrong 🤔but I do believe I have every single (original) CD put out by The Police. Yeah, I'm a fan, but it was sting who made me one.

Stewart Copeland is the REAL musical genius behind the Sound of the Police. He did most of the arrangements. Listen to his solow work as "Klark Kent, where he plays ALL the instruments, or his soundtrack to the film Rumblefish, particularly the song, "Don't Box Me In" with vocals by Stan Ridgway of Wall Of Voodoo.

Another three-piece band who were massively influential in the early 80's UK, were The Jam, fronted by the mercurial Paul Weller, ably supported by Bruce Foxton, killing it on super-heavy bass, and one of the best drummers ever......ever, Rick Buckler!!! Check out one of their minor hits, 'Funeral Pyre' and wonder at Rick Buckler's treatment of his poor innocent drum kit!! 😲😲😲
