When we read the section of The Odyssey that mentions Scylla and Charybdis in high school, my English teacher asked the class what those monsters made us think about. I raised my hand and said it reminded me of that saying 'being stuck between a rock and a hard place,' and she was stunned I got that this is where that expression comes from (back in 1986, pre-Internet). It seemed obvious to me, but no one else in my class got it (but I suspect many of them didn't bother to read the passage). Everyone read the assigned reading after that day for the rest of the excerpts from that book! Lol. I read The Iliad and The Odyssey for the first time in 6th grade when I was obsessing over Greek and Roman mythology, so I had already read the whole book a couple of times before high school. I think I was the only one in my class who'd even heard of it previously. It was clear to me when this song came out that Sting had been a grade school English teacher, slipping references like this into his songs. Love him! X) :D

I have always loved Sting's use of language in his songs and this song is a perfect example. Trying to convey the problem of being trapped between a rock and a hard place Sting uses a reference from Greek Mythology " caught between the Scylla and Charybdis". It's from the story of Odysseus who had the option of sailing past Scylla (a six headed serpent) or Charybdis (an all engulfing whirlpool monster.) Odysseus chose the lesser of two evils by sacrificing 6 of his sailors to Scylla rather than risk potentially his entire ship to Charybdis. It's a lesson in fear versus courage when making our choices in life.

I guess we all have different ways of enjoying songs but mine is definitely the tune, melody, instrumental musicianship & the voice, that's what always draws me in regardless of the subject matter. I'm also hopeless at deciphering hidden meanings so if it's not in black & white, it goes right over my head 🤣 But it does fascinate me how people are able to comprehend & interpret the lyrics so in-depth, so thanks for the insight!

This is one of those albums that's hard to fully appreciate in hindsight because as good as the songs still are, they were game changers when the album was released. New sounds. Totally different. Very influential. You wonder where the songs even came from. So, definitely appreciate the older stuff (it's good), but don't forget to keep an ear out for the new game-changing songs (they happen periodically). Because the sounds are so new and different they might not initially be your cup of tea but if you listen to them a few times, the genius becomes more clear and you'll know you were first to hear a change in the fabric of music. A thrill.

Did you catch that plot twist?? Looove this song! Is a vibe!! “Sting described "Wrapped Around Your Finger" as "a spiteful song about turning the tables on someone who had been in charge." Like other Police songs from this period, it features mythological and literary references, including the Scylla and Charybdis monsters of Greek mythology, and the German legend of Faust.”

When I heard this song the first time it brought forth the image of an old sorcerer capturing a young apprentice involuntarily through the power of a magic ring. The old sorcerer mainly wants to use the young apprentice as a servant and has little interest in teaching him. But the younger one is able to learn enough from the things the sorcerer says, and books that he leaves laying around. He eventually turn the tables, break his control, and overcomes him.

It’s impossible to describe what it was like when this album came out. I was in high school….and from the “cool kids” on down, it was like a brush fire of excitement: “The new Police! The new Police!” And all the girls with crushes on Sting got even more fixated on him when these videos started dropping (we all would watch MTV at each others’ houses after school). It was just magic - nothing like it before or since.

This song is so good. Takes me back to the winter of 1984. I was 11 and I recorded this song off the radio onto a tape. Sadly, this was the last album The Police made together as a band, but what a way to go out. This song has a very mysterious Middle Eastern vibe to it and probably because Stewart Copeland the drummer grew up in Egypt and Beirut. Great song and reaction.

If you back to their earlier albums, you can more clearly hear their jazz, reggae, ska and punk roots. I'm partial to "So Lonely", "Bring on the Night", "Spirits in the Material World", "Synchronicity II" (real up-tempo/puninfluenced track form their final studio record). They've got some cool songs that are a little off the beaten track..."Invisible Sun" (about the violence in Northern Ireland in the late 70's) and one of my favourites for it's strong emotional feel, "The Bed's Too Big Without You". I Loved, loved, LOVED this band in my early teen years and have followed Sting's career faithfully in his solo work.

Yo you finally got it! this is my absolute favorite Police song! the sound, Sting's voice, the imagery everything draws you in from the jump! a real 80s song that makes you think instead of just listening to the beat Amber, since you love Greek mythology, did you catch some Greek names in the lyrics? Scylla, Charybdis, Mephistophles? Those names make the song even darker it turned into like a small story of overcoming demons on a quest just like the ones told in ancient times Awesome symbolism! Do "Spirits in the Material World" next please! That one gets you back to banging your head!

I do believe I suggested this song on a previous Sting/Police reaction video...Very glad you two decided to check it out. I really like "Roxanne" and I love "Every Breath You Take" but THIS song has been a favorite of mine ever since I was a kid. It's one that I've remembered regularly, even though I may not have actually listened to it in years...Thanks so much for giving it a chance, I'm pleased you enjoyed it. I'm hoping that you will soon take a look at a live performance clip for your channel: "You Lost Me" sung by Christina Aguilera in 2010 when she was a guest on Late Night With David Letterman. Another song that won't ever leave my brain...

First comment! This was off of "Synchronicity" perhaps the Police's most successful album. It spawned this, "Every Breath You Take", and a few others that I would highly recommend, "Synchronicity II", and "King of Pain". And please, keep exploring Sting's solo discography! "If I Ever Lose My Faith in You" and "Shape of My Heart" are killer songs.
