I was left a quadriplegic back in 87 from a dirtbike crash. I was in month 6 or 7 out of 8 in hospital/rehab. My sister and brother-in-law brought a tape of this and put it on my Walkman with headphones. I'm still here after 35 years of many downs but enough ups to keep me from giving up, Hearing this cuts deep, but it reminds me of the gift of hearing it from them. Both warm and wrenching.

This song deals with the Great Depression and the devastating consequences for many families. Initially Dolly Parton was asked to perform the duet but she declined. Since Gabriel and Bush had been are are still very close friends she was called in to deliver the vocal parts. The rest is history.

It's a moving experience more than just a casual listen. Peter Gabriel's anguished, heart rending vocals and Kate bush's reassuring plaintive pleading to carry on hits you hard . Me anyway!!!! Both have absolute stellar voices and meld so well here. Brilliant choreographic staging, which you feel Kate had a major hand in knowing her background. Absollutely brilliant

In a moment of utter sublime metaphysics, when he was singing this song just this year in Los Angeles, he messed up with the lyrics, immediately saying "I fucked up" when it happened - right before the longest part of the female vocal solo. So during that part, he sat down on the stage, almost head in hands, as she went on singing about "don't give up" and "we're proud of who you are" and etc etc. It's like the band and audience both were amused, almost giggling, and yet deeply touched at how the song was literally playing itself out on stage. I think a lot of people in the crowd that evening likely needed to see and feel that moment.

The very first song written by a 14 yr old Kate Bush is "the man with a child in his eyes" . Once you hear it and realize that was her very first? You will then know that she is beyond next level. She studied with Mime for years just so that she could physically express her music. Must react to the 90's masterpiece Sensual World. In Fact that whole record is just epic. The fretless bass work is so amazing. Kate loves the bass and gives the instrument total freedom in her work.

To this day, I remember watching Kate Bush in a spakly jumpsuit perform "The Man with a Child in His Eyes" live, on Saturday Night Live, back in the early 70s. She was sitting on the top of the piano, accompanied by Paul Shaeffer, playing, along with a backing track, and it was amazing. I had never heard of her before. I was a complete Kate Bush fan from there, and nearly 50 years later, I still am! Hopefully Rob Squad will play and react to it!

As you listen to more Peter Gabriel you will start to see how these two artists fit together. Both are from the same genre of music. You mentioned how the intro and outro "sounded so Kate Bush", yet the song is written by Peter Gabriel. Inspired by Depression era photos and focused on the economic hardship at the time, Gabriel wrote the song from an American country/roots point of view. Is initial choice to sing the second part was Dolly Parton, but when she turned him down he brought in his friend, Kate Bush. The rest is history.

Gabriel is such an incredible songwriter. Kate Bush was a perfect choice for this. The version of this song from Secret World Live with Paula Cole is also really good. Its interesting that the strong voice is the male portion but the strong person is the woman's voice.

I can't hear this song without crying. I only found out recently that it's about the Great Depression. To me it's a song that crosses all boundaries of time, age, race, religion, etc. It's a song we can all relate to because we've all needed someone to say "Don't give up" to us❤

FINALLY!! i guess it took some pushing and Amber to be curious enough to, in my opinion, watch the best duet ballad ever. they just work in this song...his struggle and vulnerability to her soothing and calm landing spot... this song just works and makes you care about the two characters. whether its there embrace to the lunar eclipse that was on the green screen behind them. simple video for an amazing song. btw...phil collins was the drummer when peter gabriel was in Genesis...still lots of peter gabriel songs to hit. shock the monkey, games without frontiers, biko, big time....peace

I love the imagery of the video. Yes the darkness comes in life, the eclipse, but it also fades. May take a while but the darkness always fades. My favorite bit about the video shoot is Peter Gabriel said there are worst ways to spend the day than hugging Kate Bush.

Both these artists have very strong and individual voices that could easily have overwhelmed the other but what's really impressive is how they managed to convey so much emotion while showing so much restraint with their voices, especially when they're accompanied by so little instrumentation.

It is such a beautiful duet. This was already a moving song. It took on more meaning after my husband died suddenly from massive heart failure and he LOVED Kate Bush, so it was doubly hard to hear. Next, I heard Matthew Perry reference it in an interview and it became more meaningful. Then, they played it at his funeral. 😢 From a podcast with Tom Power: When asked what music might be on a hypothetical soundtrack for his memoir, Friends, Lovers, and the Big Terrible Thing, Perry confidently told Power, "''Don't Give Up.' Listen to this song when you get home, Peter Gabriel and Kate Bush. I don't know if you've heard it as it was a long time ago but it's beautiful." In the interview I watched, Matthew even described how they filmed it with just the two of them hugging and the camera moving around them etc. I'll never see this the same way I originally did when it came out.

Peter Gabriel wrote this song after watching a documentary about The Great Depression in America, originally he thought that Dolly Parton would sing the other part but she wasn't available so, he asked Kate Bush whom he knew well and I for one think that she was the perfect choice to sing this duet.
