Top-3 drummer for me (along with Ginger Baker and whoever else I'm in the mood for that day). Really unique style and incredible skill. Lots of reggae and jazz influence with a touch of punkish flair in his playing. A slicker version of Topper Headon.

Polo, if this is the beginning of a new rabbit hole for you, may I just say, your under arrest, now get ready to go somewhere totally unexpected. Jazz, Reggae, Punk, Funk, Rock, Blues.... This band has/had everything, all that sound from 3 people. It's totally and completely magical. Sting...lead vocals and bass. Andy Summers...guitar. Stewart Copeland.... percussion. Now, listen to Don't Stand So Close To Me.

Been a Police fan since I was a kid in the early 80's. Walking on the Moon might just be my all time favorite. Driven to Tears is a close second. So much great music by these three guys. Stewart Copeland is a mindblowing percussionist. The Police box set is called "Message in a Box". It is the single best music investment I have made. Now I gotta go out to the shop and listen for awhile. Yes, I still have a CD changer, and a nice tuner with big speakers. Digital streaming doesn't do much for me.

Even after breaking up, all three members had storied careers. Sting had a solo pop career, Stewart and Andy both got into film scoring. Sting had some real video hits in the 80s through 2000s. "If I ever lose my faith in you", "Fields of gold", and "Desert Rose" are just a few. He also collaborated with a ton of musicians.

When Sting went solo, he teamed up with some jazz greats (Branford Marsalis (whose brother is Wynton), Kenny Kirkland, Darryl Jones (subsequently the bass player for the Rolling Stones), and Omar Hakim (who also played with Weather Report)) for his first album, Dream of the Blue Turtles. Their first performance on tour was in France where they also added a number of his previous songs reimagined. There was a documentary of the group preparing for this performance. It was called Bring on the Night and can be found on KZbin in its entirety. You can also find just the rehearsal of Driven to Tears, there, if you search with “Bring on the Night Driven to Tears”. Worth listening to, as is the whole documentary.

This solo is different than the album...Summers manages to go a little outside for a couple of bars. Then, boom, the dynamics bring it back down. Lotta things goin' on for a 3-piece.

Andy Summers is a jazz rooted guitarist who has formally studied classical guitar as well. People are still looking after at the signature sound he uses on this song among many others. Please check out the song "Bed's Too Big Without You" mono version. It summarises what The Police was about 1979-1980. It is a rearrangement on the song originally on album "Reggatta De Blanc". It is faster and better produced.
