"Bring On The Night" was also the name of Sting's documentary on the formation of his jazz supergroup for his debut solo album. Th group consisted of Bradford Marsalis on saxophone, bassist Daryl Jones, piano player the late Kenny Kirkland, and drummer Omar Hakim.

"Bring on the night," were Gary Gilmore's last words as he was about to be executed. He was a convicted murderer who famously refused his right to appeal and asked for the death penalty. He got it, and Norman Mailer's book about him, "The Executioner's Song," inspired Sting to make this song about him.

According to Sting, The song is about a man named Gary Gilmore, who was the last man to be executed by firing squad in the USA. He was executed at dusk. Therefore the lyric “bring on the night I couldn’t stand another hour of daylight“. It’s a dark subject, but a brilliant song
@AndersonDawesWasRight4 ай бұрын
IIRC Gary Gilmore's claim to fame was that he was the first to be executed in the USA for many years. Before him there was a tacit agreement that a death sentence really meant life imprisonment.

The Police are what happens when an American expat living in London, obsessed with reggae and ska rhythms gets thrown together with a teacher moonlighting as a jazz bass player by a manager who happens to be the drummer's brother, and an experimental/prog guitarist with more road miles under his belt than the rest of the band combined. You said it, no one sounds like the Police, then or now. PS, please react to Sting's "If You Love Somebody Set Them Free"

The Police were a unique band. They fused reggae, new wave. punk, rock , jazz all together. The African tribal sound yall hearing is the Carribean music (reggae, calypso, Island tropical music). It originates from Africa. The UK had a lot of Carribean immigrants that hung out with the British punk rockers. Thats where you get the fusion at the time. They liked each others company and music.

Hi, you two! It's Andrew Erroch fae Paisley in Scotland here. This song really takes me back to being a teenager, living in my parents' house, with my older brother playing his Police records. He now has some very special edition copies. This song was more of an album track, but a very good one, although it didn't get very far in the charts. I'm going to suggest one I've suggested before and it's from this same excellent Reggatta de Blanc album. It's 'The Bed's Too Big Without You' with a killer base track. That one didn't get anywhere in the charts either, but it is one of my favourites, because it's brilliant. Æx 🙏

Great choice. One of their best. The fast picking guitar from Andy Summers in the verse while Sting takes over the offbeat reggae guitar on the bass. Then they both swap back to onbeat bass and traditional offbeat guitar in the chorus - so clever. None of this possible without the true genius of Stewart Copeland. Love the reverb on the kick drum. Agree with the comment below - The Bed's Too Big Without You needs a listen. More genius rhythms to behold. You'll love it.
