I think you nailed it on the first guess, the devil's not saying that HE is doing these things, but that WE are doing these things...and what puzzles us is why we go along and do these things with the devil, like trying to figure out the motives of a serial killer...and it's laid bare in one of my favorite lines, "I shouted out, Who killed the Kennedy's? When after all, it was you and me." and also in, "Every cop is a criminal, and all the sinners, saints." It's the old devil/angel on your shoulders...we all have that duality within us...so, the real question is what do WE get out of playing the devil's game? Girls like a bad-boy, and boys like a bad-ass...we're drawn to that darkness for whatever reason...
@denisewhite4858 Жыл бұрын
From being "drawn to that darkness" one can easily segue into Tool's "Forty-six and Two." 👹 And come to think of it, stones were man's first tools. 🤔😯

The song goes down through history, the Czar was Nicholas II of Russia. He and all his family, wife, 4 beautiful young daughters, and his son and heir, Alexei were all assassinated by the Bolsheviks during the Russian revolution. Anastasia Romanov was his next-to-youngest daughter who many believed managed to survive death. There were at least a couple of imposters claiming to be Anastasia. It mentions WWII when Germany was dropping bombs on London in the Blitz, and the bodies in the gas chambers of the concentration camps during the Holocaust…it references also the 100 Years War between the French kings and English kings, the house of Capet-Valois and the English Plantagenets who also regarded themselves as the rightful kings of France. The line about the troubadours could possibly be a reference to the Thugee cult who worshipped Kali, the Hindu Goddess of Death. The cult would waylay, kill and rob travelers on the roads of India. Lyrically brilliant song.

Hey Shon, welcome to the Stones fanclub! Your lyrical interpretation was so spot on, even if your didn't catch all the historical references - you really nailed the true meaning. Also, in 1964 the Stones had to follow James Brown in a show, (Jagger protested. saying "Nobody follows James Brown"), and afterwards he stole a lot of his dance moves, but more than that, his attitude, which comes through strong on this record. Can't wait to follow the rest of your musical journey!

The Rolling Stones (named after a Muddy Waters song) stared as a blues and R&B band in 1962, so everything they did was blues-based, like Led Zeppelin, The Animals, and many other British bands of that era. All this music came about because of the folk music revival of the late 50s and early 60s when young white kids discovered blues music at a time when blacks had turned away from the blues for Soul and R&B. Black bluesmen who had made "race records" in the 20s and 30s were literally rescued from obscurity by white blues lovers, who booked them into concerts at clubs and colleges all over America and Europe, so these original bluesmen had second careers and their music was loved by the Boomer generation who took the music most blacks had abandoned and made it into what you hear today. The Stones and The Beatles are recognized as the top two rock bands, listen to their early studio albums and buy the CDs because they were made to be listened to in an album format. Great reaction, listen to Mississippi Fred McDowell. For the early history of rock&roll, watch ""Sam Phillips, the man who invented Rock&Roll" on YT. Very insightful reaction.
