This is a song about a man mourning the unexpected death of his girlfriend, his mood is so dark he doesn't want to see any bright colors. "I see the girls walk by Dressed in their summer clothes I have to turn my head Until my darkness goes" - when he sees the young girls dressed up, it reminds him of his girlfriend whom he has lost. "I see a line of cars And they're all painted black With flowers and my love Both never to come back" - the black cars are limousines waiting to go to the girl's funeral, one of the cars is a hearse with her casket inside with flowers on the top. "I've seen people turn their heads And quickly look away Like a newborn baby It just happens everyday" Even though it happens every day just like babies being born every day, people turn their heads when they see a funeral go by.

I think anyone who has lost someone extremely dear to them or experienced some horrific circumstance that changes the way they see the world, can relate to the sentiment of this song at some point in their healing process. It’s hard to see the world cheerfully and oblivious going on around you, while your whole world falls apart. I said elsewhere in a reply that because I first knew this song as the opening to a tv show about the Vietnam war, I always interpreted it as though it was about a soldier returning from war and having a hard time adjusting to their old life, perhaps suffering from the effects of PTSD. Surprised to not see Beast of Burden and You Can’t Always Get What You Want mentioned in the comments - two of my absolute favourite Stones songs. Those two in addition to Paint it Black, Gimme Shelter, and Angie (which I have seen mentioned) - are all worthwhile listens for those new to the group.

The British people were MASSIVELY inspired by Black American music, mainly Blues, but also Jazz. They were far behind us, but they reinterpreted it in really interesting ways. What I find so cool about music is how a style can bounce back and forth from different cultures, growing each time it bounces. The exact same thing happened to Techno, which originated in Black Detroit and Chicago. The Brits put a big spin on it, bounced it back, but by that time Americans were more interested in Rap and Hip-Hop, which the Brits also had a response to.

True... Northern Soul was huge in England in the 60's and 70's...

And rock n roll! That came first we just were interested where it came from so the young English people were ordering shipments of American blues and jazz vinyl.

The brits really took rock n roll to a new level with the beatles, stones, Queen, Floyd, Zeppelin. Those 5 bands alone are 5 of the biggest bands in rocks history. Impressive!

Yeah same with punk, the American scene in NYC, Cleveland and Detroit was several years before the British got involved in the genre.

We weren’t ‘far behind’ you. It’s not about being behind. We had our own music genres. We’re on a separate continent with a very large ocean in between. There’s no reason why blues would’ve organically emerged in the U.K. when it had its roots in African folk music and is specific to that culture. Our music artists could only adapt it and reinterpret it once they had been exposed to it, which happened in the first half of the 20th century. And when you say ‘us’, that’s a bit misleading because mainstream white America took no notice of blues until the British bands popularised it. You even had separate ‘black’ and ‘white’ radio stations, something we’ve never had.

The reason they are called the worlds greatest rock and roll band is because they have been putting out and performing top tier rock since the early sixties. Jagger is ageless. Still in top physical condition and putting on energetic performances at an advanced age. It's a very deep rabbit hole you've opened up. Gimme Shelter is amazing and I could say that about many of their songs.

The stones somehow are still touring !!! Unbelievably talented everyone of them !! A little overlooked in the 60s by the Beatles !! But again what blows my mind is these guys are still touring 60 years later

I've seen a few legendary acts in their twilight years in the last 15 years and all I can say is: maaaaan, I wish I could've seen Dylan and the stones in their heyday because it was a fucking farce hearing a 90 year old Bob Dylan lazily croon his way through songs sounding like a confused dementia patient gargling hot gravel haphazardly or seeing Keiths geriatric osteoporosis riddled bones gyrate through a laughable set of their most radio friendly bubblegum songs.

The song is about the depression felt after the death of a friend / lover. The line that makes it most clear is the one about the line of cars that are all painted black -- a reference to a funeral.

Very off topic and a totally different genre but y'all should react to Rammstein. They're a German industrial metal band and they're fiiiiiire (literally). You could start with Du Hast (live version in Paris) and go on to the other hits - Ich Will, Amerika, Mein herz Brennt. Speaking of the Rolling Stones, yes they're still alive and still performing. Anyway great reaction, keep it up!

They named themselves after the blues song "Rolling Stone" by late great blues musician Muddy Waters. A lot of British rock bands around that time were influenced by American blues music.

So true! I have a favorite British Rock band that I turn people on to every chance I get. I’ve loved him and his band since I was in grade school lol, thanks to my big brother. Marc Bolan of T Rex!! I’ve never stopped listening to his work. Such a loss!! Far too soon!!

Can't you hear me screaming " play it!" 'Give me shelter' is bangin. The Beatles and The Rolling Stones were the two sides of the 60s. The Beatles were the Light and the Rolling Stones were the Dark.

My dad is a Vietnam veteran. This song was one of their anthem's for the war. He get emotional to this day every time he hears this song. He loves it and hates it at the same time. Even though this song was written about a girl it that is not how most saw the meaning. Hell, I never knew it was written about a girl until just now, LOL. This song reflected the dreadful mood of people at the time waiting to be drafted and loosing loved ones.

"Gimme Shelter" is their best rocker. "Sympathy for the Devil" is a close second. You guys would probably like "Under My Thumb" and "Get off of My Cloud" as well.

The Rolling Stones and The Beatles were part of the British Invasion in the early ‘60’s. A few of the band members are still rockin’, a few have passed. John Lennon, for example, was shot to death outside his apartment in NYC. 😢

Thanks for reacting to this. 👊 I didn't pay attention to this song's lyrics when I was growing up, and -- thanks to this listen, at 64 yrs. old -- I now understand what it was about. Fwiw, _The Stones_ (as they are called by their fans) were contemporaries of the Beatles... they were considered the dirtier, grungier, druggier, counterpart to the Beatles' cleaner, more fun, humorous, nice-guys image.

The Rolling stones were very ''out there'' with some of their songs. But there are such good ones - I personally love this one though, Paint it black is deep. They've also done Angie, Honky Tonk women, Sympathy for the devil, Ruby Tuesday, Gimmie shelter, Jumping Jack flash (I'll stop now lol) The C bomb creased me btw 🤣🤣

I saw some good shows back in the 80s; Prince, The Jacksons, Elton John, Madonna and The Stones, among others. Prince and the Rolling Stones were the best by far!!!! Different music, different crowds but my goodness, they each knew how to give you a show! I agree that you should try more. Sympathy for the Devil is a good next recommendation made by another commenter. I, myself have been known to quietly sing the one about Mothers Little Helpers to my kid, lol.
