Interesting story of Steve's ability to control a situation, I saw the Steve Miller band in 1973 (The Joker was his current album) at the U of Penn indoor venue. The security and the crowd up front were getting into what easily could have been violence. Steve stopped the band in mid song, sent the band off stage & told his guitar tech to bring him his acoustic. He sat on a high stool addressed the security saying calm down these are just kids & addressed the crowd to say security were just doing their job & everyone needs to calm down. He proceeded to play a few tunes on the acoustic, finished, then called the band back out & they finished the set. I was impressed, I was a fan from their first album (you should check out the solo work of both Boz Scaggs & Ben Sidran from the early Steve Miller Band), but that cemented my fanhood. Also Rick Roberts by himself was the warm up, he was in Zephry, Flying Burrito Brothers & Firefall. What a concert!

Now THAT is what you call crowd control. Top notch of him to be aware of what was going on and doing what was needed to calm down the situation. I remember the days of "festival" seating. When we saw Zeppelin back in the mid 70s in Houston, the venue was configured for festival seating (NO seats).. for being only 15, I was well aware of problems and deaths that had occurred prior when fans rushed the stage and we were right up front, but it all went off without any problem luckily.. so sad that kids have to lose their lives needlessly. Thanks for that great story!
@larryg71262 жыл бұрын
@@connieb4372 I wasn't even aware till he stopped the band mid song & talked the situation down, we were seated close to the stage but to his right. My eyes were on him. That "unique & authentic" thing you pick up from some of the classic rock groups is time served playing dives, small clubs & venues. They toured & not in luxury before the big break. You are hearing musicians & singers who already are comfortable with their instruments & stage presence. Makes a huge impact🙂

The band was formed in California but Miller was born in Milwaukee. His parents were close friends with guitar virtuoso Les Paul and his wife Mary Ford. They were best man and matron of honor at the Paul/Ford wedding and Les Paul was Steve’s godfather. They moved to Dallas in 1950 and Mr. Miller, who was a pathologist and recording engineer, had many distinguished musicians come to their house to record. Young Steve absorbed much from "greats" such as T-Bone Walker, Charles Mingus, and Tal Farlow. Walker taught Steve how to play his guitar behind his back and also with his teeth in 1952. His classmate in prep school was Boz Skaggs who Steve taught guitar chords so he could join Miller and his brother Buddy’s band.

I have seen Steve Miller Band many, many times in the 70s and into the 80s, in Seattle. The part of this song that goes, "Driving from Phoenix , AZ on my way to Tacoma", always got a loud, thunderous cheer from the Seattle audience. Miller lived in the Seattle area in the mid to late 70s. Last I heard he was living around Medford, OR. I would say he likes living in the Pacific North West. There's a lot of good Steve Miller song suggestions here, and I love them all. However, one of his songs that would get played at parties is a song called, Dance, Dance, Dance, which I highly recommend.
