@@HarriBestReactions this was written by Graham Gouldman, later - much - of 10cc, at age 18 in '64, and was indeed inspired by the Beatles. Mostly singer Keith Relf, drummer Jim McCarty, a bowed bass, bongos and organist Brian Auger on harpsichord, which he thought a ridiculous inclusion on a pop record. Guitarists Chris Dreja and Eric Clapton only played on the change-up section, and Clapton left soon afterward, unwilling to sacrifice his integrity and love of blues for attempted pop success. Good ear, btw, m8! 👍😘🎶🎤🎹🎸🔥

This is the early bridge to the last half of the 60s. In the US it was the Byrds and the Buffalo Springfield who distilled folk and rock and incorporated the new ways you could use pop music, that the Beatles opened the door to. In England it was the Yardbirds. I think that’s either a clavichord or a harpsichord, two classical non electrified pianos that were subsequently incorporated into electronic keyboards. That sound in the chorus, the da-da-da-da-da-da-da on the keyboard, is one of the foundations of what came to be known as garage rock or underground rock. You might even call it the tiniest seed of the punk movement that borrowed much from the garage scene in terms of musical ethics.

Jimmy Page, Jeff Beck, and Eric Clapton's legacy still continues. Jimmy as you know was the Co Founder of Led Zeppelin, and Jeff Beck would later form his own Group with Rod Stewart & Ron Wood, when they broke up Ron & Rod joined The Small Faces then The Faces and when Maggie Mae became a hit, Rod left and Ron joined The Rolling Stones in 1975. Sadly enough Keith Relf died of a Electrical Shock. Also after The Beatles, so many Young Men in England wanted to be A Rock Star. Yet what I admire about UK Groups is the fact that they were very "Open" about their love for US Blues Music.

The Yardbirds was a British group, formed in 1963. They didn't really follow on the coattails of the Beatles, they were contemporaries, and I'm sure they borrowed from each other. They were the root of many great banger groups, with early Eric Clapton formed Cream, Jimmy Page (formed Led Zeppelin & did many covers of of Yardbirds), Jeff Beck the world's greatest studio musician,' has worked with EVERYBODY, and hated by many: Richie Blackmore formed Deep Purple and then Rainbow. Yardbirds "Heartful Soul" , "I'm a Man" 1964(harmonica is dominant), "Train Keep a Rollin"(Aerosmith did famous cover!) and "Shapes of Things" would be great songs to react to, super cool early rock!!! Your fans will love these deep dives!

A few noteworthy songs by The Yardbirds that others overlooked are "Good Morning Little Schoolgirl", "Evil Hearted You", "I'm a Man", "You're a Better Man Than I", and "The Train Kept A-Rollin'". On a related note, one of the hits Jimmy Page played on before joining The Yardbirds was "Sunshine Superman" by Donovan. Page also backed up Donovan after The Yardbirds fell apart and while he was forming Led Zeppelin. Donovan's "Hurdy Gurdy Man" from 1968 features Jimmy Page, John Paul Jones, and John Bonham from a not yet formed Led Zeppelin. Bonham's drumming on that song is unmistakable.

The "British Invasion" bands of musical talent that hit the airwaves were similar in style, sound, and musical culture and they fed off each other to write songs that appealed to the younger generation nurtured on the 50s Rock from the US. That is why they had the sound they did, like one another, because there shared their influence.

For better or worse, so many of these bands were started because they heard the early Beatles singles and wanted to play that kind of Rock and Roll. This was the case in both North America and Britain. It's a common story in interviews - "I heard the (fill in the blank) Beatles song on the radio and thought, that's a good way to make a living!"

Over Under Sideways Down is an excellent example of the Yardbirds' pop music output. Keeping in mind that they were strongly divided between pop music & the blues. I think that's the reason for the coming & going of a number of great guitarists. And don't forget Jeff Beck! --don, mphs

Clapton was on this recording and it does sound like the Beatles and that is reason Clapton left the band. They tried to get Jimmy Page but he was happy with the session work he was doing so he referred the Yardbirds to his friend Jeff Beck. About a year later, the bassist quit and Page needed out of the session biz so he joined as the bassist. Beck got kicked out for being very erratic (drug induced) and page took over in mid '67 as on guitar. The Yardbirds fell apart for good in the summer of '68 and somehow Page got stuck with the remaining gigs the band had under contract. So he got a band together and did those gigs, I think they were in Scandanavia somewhere, as the New Yardbirds. He and his band then came to the US and did some gigs billed as "A New Band from England". He was going to use New Yardbirds as the name of his band but Keith Moon of the Who thought it would be a fun name for a band. Page then changed the name of the band to Led (spelled like this because he thought us dumb Americans would pronounce Lead as leed, and he's probably right, so he dropped the "a") Zeppelin and the rest is history.

I can't understand why so many people want to or insist on comparing one group to another. Why can't you folks just concentrate on what is being presented instead 9f being distracted by so much comparing. Comparing the Yardbirds to the Beatles is like comparing apples to oranges. They're both fruit but other that that they're not even close to being similar.

The Yardbirds formed in 1963 about three years after The Beatles, but I personally think they're far more Blues influenced than the early Beatles. The album came at right about the time Clapton left the band and he had a limited role playing in it near the middle of the song.

When I saw The Yardbirds in America at basically a teen dance, Jeff Beck had left the band during the ill-conceived winter tour; so Jimmy Page picked up lead guitar and Chris Dreja went from rhythm guitar to bass. That gave us the chance to hear some early Led Zeppelin guitar work by Page, so everything turned out rather nicely. Also, it was necessary filler because lead singer Keith Relf had a really nasty throat infection and could barely sing. Keith did play a ton of blues harp though!

Ah yes, the British Invasion - perhaps not as much The Beatles but the overall style/production level of 1964 - 1965. Songs were generally well rehearsed and recorded live in just a few takes. Keep in mind that people like Eric, Jeff & Jimmy were not "Superstars" quite yet, just another good studio/band player honing their own style. At this point in time Jimi Hendrix was in the back up band for Little Richard and then Curtis Knight and the Squires before he moved to England and formed The Experience in 1966. Carry On!!
