The Yardbirds are one of the most important bands in rock history. So many great musicians came out of the Yardbirds. Led Zeppelin started out as the New Yardbirds. Guitarist Jimmy Page joined the band, and then all the other members quit, leaving him responsible for their contractual obligations. He had to get a whole new band together, in order to play the dates that the Yardbirds had agreed to perform. I, for one, think he did alright.

"Heart Full of Soul" is one of my favorite songs. Two and a half minutes of slipping straight into the sauce. The singer was Keith Relf. His look in both videos was very Andy Warhol. The guitar player was Jeff Beck. Jimmy Page took Beck's place when Beck left the band and ended up with the franchise, so to speak, when The Yardbirds broke up. Page's efforts to reform The Yardbirds led to the formation of Led Zeppelin. Although none of the musicians in the either video were in Led Zeppelin. Also check out The Yardbird originals "Shape of Things, "Over, Under, Sideways, Down," and "You're a Better Man Than I" or their blues covers "I'm a Man," "Smokestack Lightning," and "Train Kept A-Rollin'."

Hard to comment on the archetypal band that's more interesting for what the members did next (Led Zep, Renaissance, Jeff Beck). I know Keith Relf's voice sets some people's teeth on edge (...have they heard Jim McCarty sing ?!) so it's worth noting that Heart Full Of Soul was also cut by The Ghost Dance (need I say more!) + When India, appalling right-winger that she is, researches the band she will be taken ill!

As was mentioned they had three of the greatest guitarists. First Eric Clapton who actually left the band because didn't like the Pop direction the band was taking with the song For Your Love. Jeff Beck replaced him and it's Beck you see in these two videos. Beck had a breakdown and was replaced by Jimmy Page. Beck returned and for a short time both Beck and Page were in the band and you can see them both perform on Stroll On in a scene from a movie which I believe was called Blow Out. Then Beck left and Page remained and eventually the rest of the band left and Page brought in new members and completed some show they had contracted for as the New Yardbirds before renaming the band Led Zeppelin.

I really like how you delve into the emotions of the songs as you see them. Great job! I was 16 in 1965. These are two of my favorite Yardbird songs. My brother was a lead guitar player at the time, and that's how bands dressed in those days, matching suits, pencil thin ties, not always black glasses though but the glasses helped shield the glare from stage or studio lights. Eric Clapton was lead guitar on the recording of For Your Love, but left right after. It was their first big hit. Jeff Beck was lead guitar on Heart Full of Soul. Jimmy Page (later in Led Zeppelin) started playing with them on bass, then was lead guitar in tandem with Beck starting in 1966. Those three guitarists are are the trifecta of English guitar royalty and influenced (along with Jimi Hendrix) everything that came after. Their last album was recorded in 1967 and they broke up in 1968. Check out their cover of Bo Diddley's "I'm a Man".

I think the 'Heart Full of Soul' video is the one I learned the solo from! At this stage The Yardbirds were competitors to the likes of The Rolling Stones and The Animals - before moving out into the psychedelic end of the 1960s. Had they not broken up in 1968 we would have been robbed of Led Zeppelin, but would they have become a different kind of progressive band in the 1970s? Jeff Beck (here on guitar) would later work with the likes of Stevie Wonder - who wrote 'Superstition' for him - and has proved to be a more experimental player in some respects than Jimmy Page.

This was recorded, I believe, on a TV show called Shindig. So you got the screaming girls. I was a huge fan of the Yardbirds. Jeff Beck (the main guitarist) gave the band a real unique sound. No band sounded like the Yardbirds. Over, Under, Sideways, Down or New York City Blues or Shapes of Things or even their cover of the old blues song Smokestack Lightning.

The shape of Things is considered the first psychedelic song. Awww look young Jeff Beck in a suit. The Yardbirds are an English rock band, formed in London in 1963. The band's core lineup featured vocalist and harmonica player Keith Relf, drummer Jim McCarty, rhythm guitarist/bassist Chris Dreja and bassist/producer Paul Samwell-Smith. The band is known for starting the careers of three of rock's most famous guitarists, Eric Clapton, Jimmy Page and Jeff Beck, all of whom ranked in the top five of Rolling Stone magazine's list of 100 greatest guitarists

These two TV performances took place when Jeff Beck was the lead guitarist for The Yardbirds. Eric Clapton was lead guitarist from 1963 to 1965. From what TV performance footage I have seen, Eric Clapton's guitarwork did not stand out very much. Clapton really came out with his own guitar style when he recorded with John Mayall for the 1966 album, "John Mayall And His Bluesbreakers (With Eric Clapton)". I would like to see you react to their song, "All Your Love", which is a cover of an Otis Rush song. Jimmy Page became the lead guitarist for The Yardbirds, and was there from 1966 until 1968, when the band broke up. I would like to see you react to a 1968 TV performance by The Yardbirds for the song, "Dazed And Confused", that was done for a French television network. When Jimmy Page joined Led Zeppelin, they rerecorded "Dazed And Confused" with completely different lyrics. Personally, I like the 1968 TV performance of "Dazed And Confused" by The Yardbirds better. The song is much easier on the ears to listen to.

The lead Guitarist, Jeff Beck, is a legend. They originally used a sitar for the main riff but it sounded too thin as it is an acoustic instrument - he said, 'I know, I'll play the guitar and distort and bend the notes to make it sound like a sitar' - the result is a classic

The bassist Paul Samwell-Smith became one of the most respected producers of the 70's. He is probably best known for his work with Cat Stevens, e.g the famous song "Morning Has Broken". Jeff Beck on the 12 string and lead guitar. Originally in the studio the lead guitarist was Eric Clapton who left soon after "For Your Love" was released. The second guitarist became an advertising photographer. Drummer Jim McCarty and the singer Keith Relf formed Renaissance. This band - after many line up changes was the foundation for Led Zeppelin. Yardbirds split and it was left to Chris Dreja and then guitarist Jimmy Page to form a new band to fill in the touring contracts. The rest is real life mythology.

At around the same time as The Yardbirds started,Gouldman was in a band called The Mockingbirds. While they never had a big hit,Gouldman's songs were hits for many other artists including The Hollies and Herman's Hermits.

Here's a cool fact for everyone who doesn't know, Heart Full Of Soul was originally done as a sitar version by a couple of Indian guys one on sitar and the other on a tablet and when they laid it down for the group if they weren't getting it right because the chord changes are in a 4-4 cord change and the sitar player just could not get it right, so then next thing you know they had Jeff back come up with something on the spot that would sound very close to that so he did the 44 core change on his guitar and added some rock and roll to it and next thing you know that became the iconic rift for Heart full Of Soul. One thing I forgot to mention in the original recording there was one guy on sitar and another guy on Tabla, so when the sitar player cannot get it right they had him leave but they kept the Tabla player and kept his part on the track.

Sadly the singer Keith Relf whilst practising with his electric guitar in his basement was electrocuted to death at just 33 years of age. Even worse it was one of his kids who found him and because they were used to him practising thru the night thought he was asleep. Great voice and a brilliant Blues harmonicist who never succeeded as well after the demise of The Yardbirds, Relf preferred Blues/Rock music to the more commercial pop sound.

I'm still a little sad, that this band is now reduced to a stepping stone for guitarists. Relf was a good musician too. Cheers! :)
