Tom Jones is Welsh. He actually had almost no formal voice training before becoming a professional singer. That was extraordinary raw talent. If you'd like to hear/see Tom's more upbeat side, I recommend "She's A Lady," one of his biggest hits. Singer and songwriter Lonnie Donnegan, who was a friend of Tom Jones and toured with him, wrote the song for Tom to sing. In the music program The Voice, Tom Jones actually was the only judge to turn around when Lonnie's son, Peter, sang one of his father's songs, and Tom ended up inviting Peter to sing "I'll Never Fall in Love Again" (the song Lonnie wrote for Tom) together with him. You should see this on KZbin. You could see Tom always wanted to cry as he was singing the song his friend wrote for him together with his friend's son, who was probably not even born at the time Tom sang this in 1967. He is British.

I have spoken on KZbin to the Songwriter:Lonnie Donegan's son=Peter and he confirmed he went along with that on The Voice in the duet with Sor Tom but this was not written for Sir Tom as it was written in 1961 and Tom was in The Tommy Scott welsh band then and was known until 1963. But why ruin a good story as Tom made it his own :)

Imagine if you can, a 10 yr old girl, me, growing up with older parents, there were 9 of us kids and I was towards the bottom of the ladder. 7 boys and 2 girls. Our home was all about Country music. At 10 I already knew the words to so many great ones, I love music always have. So Country was the only influence by ten that I knew. Oldest brother, still lived at home, he bought a new "Color" tv to replace the black and white, but not until after I watched, heard Tom Jones perform this, live on a stage. Mind you again I was 10. The usual night time TV line up after supper, regular watched programs was starting in our living room. As soon as this man started singing, I stopped frozen in what ever I was doing. HAD to listen and watch, and with every moment I felt goose bumps on my neck and arms. To this day I have never forgotten that feeling of amazement, the power which was his, emanate with his voice, his words and his movements. Stunned, I was. Sure there have been numerous singers over the years which I like very well, but not one has ever effected me as Tom Jones did that day. Only one has taken 2nd place to him, Steve Perry. These are not just singers, these are Artists, who have the ability to convey feelings, with every word, and note and freedom of expression that is amazing and hard to match.

He was born in Wales and was awarded the OBE in 1998 (I think) and Knights in the UK (so he is now Sir Tom Jones)...he is a judge on the X Factor UK and regularly does impromptu duets with the contestants. He is now 80 years old and his voice is still amazing. Be safe and Enjoy Life..
