This song was about someone explaining their psychedelic drug trip to the doctor. The doctor being the person that was in the previous song called "Lost Keys Blame Hoffman", which comes after the song "Lipan Conjuring" where the person singing partakes in some form of psychedelic Native American ritual. Good stuff.

This song is just an embellishment of a story told to the guys by the singer of Green Jelly (Jello damn it! Lol) about a friend of theirs trip he had. He never went to the hospital of course, and he never seen any aliens (of course lol).

"S*** the bed" is double entendre where one meaning is "failed spectacularly" which is what happened during the trip/abduction when he forgot to write down the important message, and then likely at least once meant on the literal reality side because the narrator is in the E.R. for having taken too much LSD and being all freaked out on the street. At the end of Lost Keys the doctor asks the narrator/patient to "tell me everything..." and so he definitely does. It gets slowly more coherent and less frantic toward the end as the LSD wears off, and so does the music. Masterpiece, an opera about LSD.

From a negative experience of mine, the start of the song feels like a scared and confused peak. When the line “overwhelmed as one would be placed in my position” comes, it’s laying in bed thinking “oh god that sucked”

The Rosetta Stone is a big black stone discovered in Egypt that had the same text inscribed in Egyptian hieroglyphs and ancient Greek alphabet. The stone allowed the translation of the hieroglyphs that until then nobody understood. In this song, the narrator is the Rosetta Stone that has to translate the message of the E.T to humanity, but he doesn't remember the message. Or maybe, the character is high on psychedelic drugs and is just stoned (Rosetta Stoned). When you understand the lyrics it's a very funny song (in a dry kind of way).

Don't feel bad about the 25 min reaction. I love it. Or, about not getting the lyrics on the first go through. I have been an obsessed tool fan since 94 maybe a colonel in the army if you will, and I had no idea what was being said when this came out. I caught about what you did. They also didn't have lyrics in the album. So, I was on my own. I would have thought this as throwing you in the deep end a bit too early so I am glad you liked it. The previous track on the album (lost keys blame hoffman) which is the intro for this song sets the scene when Maynard (well, the subject of the song) is in a hospital unresponsive but with solid vitals and a Dr has to convince him to speak. Finally convinced to speak this song is what he says. DMT is mentioned at the beginning of the song which is a powerful hallucinogen that frequently leads to spiritual type hallucinations, and I am told can lead to S the bed. I have never tried it so nobody flame me if I am wrong (open to honest criticism though). Being strapped down in a hospital he cant' really do anything about it either way. Before being in the hospital he is in this trip in the desert near area 51 on DMT and he has a being come to him and give him "the message" to deliver to everyone else. B/c he is high, he ends up not being able to remember it. Whether you believe some special being came to him and actually delivered the message or if it's just a trip is up to the listener. I tend to take the road that he was just high. I have been altered and though of GREAT ideas which either I can't remember the next morning or were just garbage even if I did write them down. Great stuff. Again, love that you enjoyed it, and am hoping you give a heads up for the Aenema album live show. I really don't want to miss it.

a rich tapestry of ever changing sound. like a kaleidoscope. the jagged rhythmicality can feel odd at first, thereby not everyone's natural pick, since it isn't as digestable as their more straightforward stuff. very rewarding to get back to these tunes and uncover a new dimension to them that previously went unnoticed.

What Maynard did here is spin an elaborate and beautiful story about the human condition… the narrator using drugs as an escape/coping mechanism, his psychedelic hallucination of aliens who chose him to spread meaning to the masses, and then the aspect that he can’t remember what they said and couldn’t have written it down anyway bc he forgot his pen-that he f-ed up again. For me, that represents a person having difficulty, choosing escapism, that escapism allowing his irrational subconscious to taunt him with meaning and hope, and his rational subconscious delivering the cutting blow that there is no meaning that can be derived from such escapism-from any, in fact… no easy route for someone who’s tried too many easy routes. All that against a backdrop of chaotically beautiful TθθL instrumentals.

The tooliest Tool song. EDIT: lul double-take at 12:42 was priceless. Even if you shake your head incredulously, you can't help but shake it to the beat once you find the rhythm. Here's a drum cover that is propbaly the most accurate to the actual album version: kzbin.info/www/bejne/oaipemRjp894q68 Theres also a deconstruction or "how its's made (interpreted)" on that page. Pretty nuts and worth a watch or two. The percussion on this one is an absolute treat.

Æ is symbol for ash in alchemy or fire and brimstone. It's why they used it in Ænema. The song is about judgement on LA. Or bringing fire and brimstone. So you get an enema (cleansing) and judgement (fire and brimstone). Just thought I'd toss that in there since you asked about alchemy. You also mentioned Catholicism...if you listen to Jambi, it's about his mother passing and how he wished he could take away all his criticism of Christianity because his mother was a devout Christian and he understood everything she believed in when the pain of her passing struck him. Thus at the end of the song he says "silence Legion, save your poison, silence Legion stay out of my way!"

Rosetta Stoned is part two of the song. Part one is called Lost Keys (Blame Hoffman). It ends with the doctor telling the patient that was dropped off at the hospital by an anonymous person. "We want to help you, in whatever way we can, but you need to talk to us. Tell us what happened." Rosetta Stone begins with. "Alrighty, picture this if you will." The Key to the whole thing is the hallucinogen DMT. Produced naturally by the Pineal gland (also called the 3rd eye) in the brain. DMT is released as you dream and during the moments of death. It is responsible for the light in the tunnel effect people that have died and been brought back to life claim to experience. It also is produced by a plant, cooked down into a potent smokable powder. The effects only last a few minutes and are not addictive but often life changing for the user.
