Your reaction to the lyrics is a perfect example of why he writes them that way. He wants you to think; ask yourself questions. Relate it to yourself. It's a testament to the depth of his artistry and his intelligence. His lyrics tend to often be an allegory about "us" as people.

9:08 Sudden, violent, inexplicable loss like that is just indescribable. Shock and heartache like that can be deadly. "Heartstrings" are tendons (chordae tendineae) that connect parts of the heart, and they can rupture under extreme stress. That part of the song almost always brings tears to my eyes. For as hard and heavy as this song is, it's one of the hardest ones for me to sing along with for that reason. My throat just closes right up. But it brings the message that much closer to home. These are not things to celebrate, and yet our society thrives on them. Blessings on that family in your mom's neighborhood.

4:30 Nailed it right away. Except for not picking up on it being an analogy for everyone, not just a specific subject like a villain. We LIKE death and suffering. Its more than just human, its animalistic nature. Those instincts have helped us to survive, our shadow selves, our darkness. That darkness will rule us if we are unwilling to admit we like to live vicariously through others suffering. It makes us feel better about ourselves

@TRudder1 Жыл бұрын
Correct
@ethanfowler1752 Жыл бұрын
That’s the simplest way to put it yes, but during Undertow and Ænima eras, Maynard added more than once in interviews that he used to be more unloved with the music being made, he wouldn’t tell the band what to do, he would just give them insight on his own ideas on certain messages the songs should give people that listen to it, like Jimmy, Ænema, Stinkfist, Pushit, Hooker with a Penis, and even Wings for Marie and 10,000 days, according to the band, the song Third Eye and Forty Six and Twi was the only songs off Ænima that Danny, Justin, and Adam created themselves before introducing it to Maynard while he was writing lyrics, which makes the recording process from Ænima to Lateralus much more interesting and intense

One of my favorites for sure. The build toward the end right before the last chorus (starts around 18:25 in this vid) is excellent, with the instruments each slowly changing their patterns to become harder and harder. The stream was a lot of fun to hang out on, thank you! Glad you are enjoying this band!
@exileinoblivion7 Жыл бұрын
Yeah even before that when the news broadcast part ends and Danny starts playing that almost monotonous sounding beat almost as if time is passing by, while slowly evolving it into this anxiety inducing thunder. Meanwhile Adam goes from playing a clean innocent sound, to this head smashing riff that literally feels like it's pulling the energy out of you. Then of course you have Maynard's incredibly powerful lyrics on top of all this. Yeah it might be the best bit of music ever recorded

Reactions are so important, and so many reactors ARE helping to keep the legendary recordings alive and introduce them to new fans. So many times I got into music and enjoyed it so throuroughly, and wanted someone else I knew, anyone else I knew to listen and get the same kind of joy and energy I did upon my first listen. Time and time again I sat in anticipation waiting for friends to have some kind of similar reaction, but usually it was someone sitting there kind of bored and talking through/over the music cause they were not digging it like I did. Finally, thanks to Reactors on YT, I get to VICARIOUSLY watch fan after fan discover these songs and react in the same ways I have. There's a supreme joy in watching people enjoy things, and a certain connection I seem to form with certain content providers such as yourself for appreciating similar things in music as I do. Thank you for what you do. Keep up the great work man. I'll be watching.

Credulous at best, your desire to believe in angels in the hearts of men… Pull your head on out [of] your hippie haze and give a listen…shouldn’t have to say it all again… The universe is hostile, so impersonal, devour to survive, so it is, so it’s always been… Don’t know why, but this section of lyrics is in my top 10 Maynard phrases. There’s something so raw, but deeply philosophical and insightful about it, kinda cynical but honest.
