To me, as beautiful as her voice is, it isn't what makes her music so special. Her interpretation of the lyrics, her delivery, is without equal. She is an old soul. We are privileged to experience her magic.

Tracy is a true artist. She went to the top rapidly with her first album but looks like she was unable to stay there. I remember a duo with Peter Gabriel singing 'Don't give up' during the Amnesty Int'l tour in 1988. Very meaningful performance. Excellent reaction Polo.

I don't think she wanted to "stay there." She is a very private person and said she stepped away from live performing because being in the public eye was uncomfortable. She has done a few performances on television and at awards shows over the years, including Tracy Chapman "Hound Dog" - Buddy Guy Tribute - Kennedy Center (2012), but definitely pulled back from the "music business."

You are so rapt and quiet while you react to anything. You give us all a silent space to come up with our own reactions. Tracy Chapman's first album broke while I was going through a break up and working in a French bakery in Manhattan. "Baby Can I Hold You Tonight?" It shatters me every time I hear it. I remember melting sugar and watching the steam puffs shoot up from the copper pot as my bitter tears dropped into the molten sweetness.

I'd just like to point out the guitar here. It's not flashy at all, but it's amazing how she evokes the original with just a couple of perfectly placed bass runs, and it is NOT easy to play clean like that on an electric guitar. No effects, just a little reverb... clean! When great guitarists practice that's what they're working for.
