This is basically a 12-bar blues, by the 1990s it was a rather old-fashioned music form, but this won a Grammy because it just works on every level. It has a groove and feel that you can't resist.

Yeah it's much more of a blues than "Fast Car", though in the reprise I feel like it's going into a more gospel direction. Also, if you want to hear an older bluesman realling digging into Tracey's song, check out Junior Wells' performance of it (on his very last studio album in 1996).

@@adamwarlock1 Thanks for the recommendation. I love the cover. One of the commenters on the video said it inspired him to play the harmonica. It's also interesting to hear the words coming from an even older, bluesier soul. Truly a timeless song for every generation. 🙂

Astonishing song. Definitely one of her best But she also has a song called "I did it all" which only deep Tracy fans would know that I consider extremely underrated. It's her life story in a completely brutaly honest way.

I don't know what genre she belongs in either. Perhaps folk, blues, country or some combination of sorts. She has always been amazing, and I haven't found a song of hers that isn't great. I think the fact that she doesn't fit in a labeled box may be the reason she didn't become more popular. Her music never fails to impress and delight me. What amazes me is that so few people know of her.

We put her in in the genre of 'womyn's music.' Back in the 90's, the lesbian community celebrated with womyn's music and Tracy was definitely on our list. Miss her but know that she is not someone who likes the celebrity lime light. Glad to see young people discovering her. THanks for doing this.

Wow! I had not seen this version of that song. 👊🏻 I had just opened a music store (CDs) when this album came out. We sold hundreds of her first CD - and she was pretty much unknown a month before its release. Tracy Chapman turned a lot of heads and won millions of people over via radio and MTV. In a time of hair bands and popular aging rockers, she carved out a fantastic new niche of her own. Much respect. Great job with this one, Britt! Thank you.

@@gallery963😂 enough shots on goal, and you're bound to find a sucker, i guess. I agree about the live vs studio, and one version of her songs is a duet and I just don't need someone else singing her song. Nah, if you're singing with Tracy Chapman, you're backup, don't get twisted.

This is old school blues guitar while the vocals are a mix of blues, soul, and gospel that's uniquely Tracy, but you can definitely hear all those and then when they speed up, it's somewhere between a fast blues riff and B with some 70s style rock. She obviously has many different influences and she managed to include a bunch of them in one song which is a lot easier said than done

It's the BLUES. The structure of the song is a 12-bar blues. Plus that voice of hers couldn't be more blues. I loved how you felt this was older music. Like 50's-ish. Well, the real blues masters were in their prime in the 50's though you can still hear the blues in so much of the music that has been made since the 50's. But the reality is it goes so much further back. To the 20's, 30's, 40's and probably even further back to the turn of the last century.

I love Tracy Chapman's music. I grew up listening to her. Here's another suggestion in case you're interested "Tracy Chapman - Baby Can I Hold You (Live)" this song is the third single released by American contemporary folk artist Tracy Chapman released in 1988. The song reached the top 50 in the US. Chapman has several songs that's political and addressed social injustice; she certainly falls within the category of folk and rock music.

Artist is something that is thrown around to mean performer, entertainer, but she is a true artist in the heart of the definition. Every once in a while a Bach, a Motzart, etc. comes along and re-adjusts your standard for what the true definition of Artist should be. Someone who can grab you by your soul and make you pay attention.

I remember seeing her at an outdoor folk festival one summer night. Stage was at the bottom of a hill and everyone was sitting on the hill like a roman amphitheater. She started playing "Talking 'bout a revolution" and without prompt like everyone there was of one mind, everyone lit their candles. In the dark of the night, suddenly it was like Tracy was just sitting there playing to sea of stars in the night sky. Was one of the coolest things I had ever seen. And she was phenomenal.
