"This song is a sad song if you listen the lyrics but that's not how you feel while you're listening" is like the thesis statement of twenty one pilots lol. Every song is either a mellow banger or happy sounding, but they're almost all about struggle and strife
@GarnetJ2 жыл бұрын
I really enjoy when someone reacts to twenty one pilots for the first time. They are a duo: Tyler (vocals, songwriter, bass, keys/synth, ukulele, guitar, creative content) and Josh (drums and trumpet). They still live in Columbus OH where they were born and raised. The video was filmed with their actual families in their childhood homes. Tyler shared a room with his brother, which is why he was in the bedroom scene with them. A lot of their music deals with struggles with depression, anxiety, and insecurities. The character of Blurryface (the name of this album) is a personification of Tyler’s insecurities and the black paint represents the almost suffocating like control Blurryface has over what he creates (throat: voice and hands: what he writes and performs). The pitched down vocal and red are Blurryface. But even though many of the lyrics tackle serious topics and issues, they have a way of making the music very uplifting. And their live shows take it to the next level! I hope you continue the TØP journey! I would recommend these next: - Car Radio - Migraine (some serious bars!) - Lane Boy - Fairly Local - Holding Onto You (Live From Fox Theater) - Heavydirtysoul (this song is the bridge between the Blurryface album and the Trench Era, which is amazing but you will appreciate it more once you have explored their older music. Nearly everything is interconnected.) The other thing you will discover is they don’t really have a genre. Their sound is very eclectic. It’s a fun journey!

Don't feel bad about pausing, the reactors who just watch a whole video silently and go "Ah yeah that was cool" and then end are practically stealing content from the original posters of the video. The point of a Fair Use reaction is to provide something transformative, and you're actually pausing and taking the time to share your thoughts and insights are what make this ACTUAL content and not just lazy "lemme make money while watching YT videos I would've watched anyway". @@dangerousdiscourse Yeah that's fair too. If you don't pause, then why are you even there when I could just lookup the vid myself, but if you pause every 5 seconds then I may as well just watch the video on DSL for the same experience. I had a horrific childhood. It would be a nightmare to go back to that time; but I understand this song. I survived my childhood because of my brother (that candle bar cuts deep). Adult problens put distance between us later on but as children? We'd go to war for eachother. We took beatings for eachother. We went hungry for eachother. I'd give almost anything to turn back time to those days. Tragically, he was murdered a couple months after his 30th birthday and sometimes a certain smell brings him back to me. RIP Capt. "The song is a sad song, but that's not how yoy feel when you're listening to it. " - Is basically what twenty one pilots is about. They sing a lot about mental health and how it affects them, especially Tyler (the singer, writer, composer, mixer, multi instrumentalist and genious) who's been dealing with a lot of depression and anxiety and thoughts about suicide. And they have helped A LOT of people struggle through mental illness. I think that is one of the main reasons why their fanbase is so loyal. Also because of how true Tyler and Josh (the amasing drummer and a very big part of twenty one pilots) are to themselves, by not being corrupted by the indutries, but instead going they own way! --> "Lane boy" is all about that! One of all great songs by them! The black print on his neck and hands represent his insecurities (along with blurryface, which is a red thread throug their music), in his creativity and voice. Red is blurryface's colour. Oh and the genre is Twenty one pilots ^.^ Keep on doing your great work! Love your reaction! =D Love from Norway!

Paint on Tyler's hands and neck is a representation of Blurryface - this album is Blurryface and its a concept album where Tyler is constantly battling Blurryface which is the personification of all his insecurities, bad thoughts, etc - the black on his hands and neck is him trying to cover up insecurities in his music (vocals and writing)

I'm 60, and my son is 20. I found 21P through him - it's his favorite group. I am fascinated with the depth of their lyrics, and in particular the concept of Blurryface - the personification of his insecurities, which he treats as a person and interacts with directly. That's profound.

I've found that Twenty One Pilots kind of defies genre. He raps, he sings, but the music is so many different styles. I've heard hip hop beats, reggae, ska, electronic, industrial and typical rock and pop through their catalogue. They're like a chameleon - they change to suit whatever mood/atmosphere/lyric that they wish. That's paint on his hands/neck and represents his 'alter-ego' Blurryface. Insanely talented multi-instrumentalists. Tyler Joseph - vocals, piano, keys, ukelele, synth, bass, guitar. Josh Dun - drums, percussion, trumpet, keys, synth, vocals (backing). Their well of songs is deep! Highly recommend: Jumpsuit, Heavydirtysoul, Chlorine, Car Radio, Ode To Sleep, Ride, Lane Boy, Mulberry Street, The Outside...for starters... Amazing group! Great reaction & analysis.

Hello friend, 48 year old male here. Welcome to the twenty one pilots fan club(clique) because I promise you will enjoy these guys. All I can say is read the comments, listen to the people, sit back and enjoy the journey. Lead singer Tyler writes about his own insecurities all the time. The whole album Vessel is about that, internal demons, depression, anxiety etc. including one he wrote when he found out about fans contemplating suicide(powerful). Anyway his “bars” are amazing, he writes every song. The beats are amazing, production is amazing. The whole band is amazing. And their live shows, and the best I’ve ever seen.. seen them 5 times in concert. New subscriber here and hiunwill have many other newbies going down the TØP rabbit hole.

To Howard and Scarlet, I am fifty years old and this is the first band I've ever been a true •fanatic• of. And I don't have a kid to blame it on. I have been to see them live three times now, and will hopefully be seeing them again in the future. I have always loved excellent music, I was raised on Van Morrison, Jimi Hendrix, the Beatles, Nina Simone, Phoebe Snow, Pink Floyd, so many others. But this band, and their obvious purpose, which is, I think, to help teenagers survive adolescence and all of it's crippling derangements, are so unquestionably •good• to me, that no other band can compare. They are becoming masters at their craft, but also, they genuinely feel, I think, that they have been appointed a job from their God, to save these children's lives. And I think that is the most worthwhile thing I've heard about in maybe ever.

As someone who had a rough childhood (abusive step-dad) this song makes me cry but moreso because I remember all the friends I had. Living with my sister. When my mom was alive. How when I compare the one stress of hiding from dad growing up to the mountain I carry today I'd go back to getting my knocked around by my Dad any day. Cause now I'm mostly alone, have all the normal adult stuff and am very aware of how precious life is and feel it slowly drain from me every day. I had a lot of preconceived ideas about this band since they had a few overplayed radio songs back in the day, but I took my daughter to a show and quickly changed my tune. They are extremely talented and their live shows are unbelievable!! Tyler writes all their lyrics himself and they play multiple instruments. He does a lot of their production. They like to control everything they do. I was reading in Rolling Stones that there were like only 22 or 23 number 1 songs written by a sole writer in the 2010s….and 3 of those songs were by Tyler Joseph. The guy is creative and commands a crowd like nobody’s business. Very genuine and good to their fans.

It's vindication, the uplifting nature comes not only from the music but also from understanding a feeling and being happy that someone else knows it too. This song takes me back on a different level. This is literally me and my best friend growing up. We'd go to eachothers houses, play video games, go on adventures... hell, we even had the secret handshake. Whats funny is you mention what about people that didnt have a good childhood? My parents are still together, they tried the best they could to give me and my siblings a good life. My buddy however, had divorced parents, dad was never around, "lived" with his mother even though she was never around either. Working multiple jobs and spending any of her free time looking for that man in her life. I would stay at his house on the weekends and my folks would be under the impression that there was some sort of adult supervision. There was not. But we were there for each other. And because of that absence of adults we were given the opportunity at a pretty amazing childhood. Like thoes 90s movies where the kids would just get into situations and you're going "where are the parents?" We were able to explore the countryside for miles, hiking creekbeds, finding caves and old abandoned houses. Looking for lost mines. We lived in a fantasy world that was on "A Bridge to Tarabithia" levels of childhood imagination. Im thankful everyday for the adventures and memories we were able to create because of his absentee parents but as an adult my heart hurts for what he didn't have that allowed us to have that. Nostalgia is a strange and powerful thing. This song and video hits me in the feels like a truck. To anyone out there that has a friend in need, just be there for them... and let them be there for you.

If you like music that sounds happy but has sad lyrics, you are in the right place with TOP! For more along those lines I recommend Guns for Hands, Migraine, Ode to Sleep, and Ride (in any order). The band is just Tyler and Josh; the third guy in this video is Tyler's brother. The dark markings on Tyler's hands and neck represent his insecurities around his voice and writing ability. If you get invested please consider doing the Trench Trilogy, which actually includes a 4th song off the prior album: - Heavydirtysoul - Jumpsuit - Nico and the Niners - Levitate There's a whole story with lots of symbolism in that series of music videos, so they should be watched in order for the full effect. As you already noted, they really defy classification into one music genre, but they are immensely talented and have lyrics with real depth.
@bradleymay53502 жыл бұрын
Lol gotta admit, that comment about the ink on his neck and hands threw me. I blinked and thought "Pardon?" I always suspected it was via a permanent marker or something but had no idea why. I assumed it was an avant-garde fashion choice. But a quick google search of the musician explaining it in his own words validated your comment while remaining just as mystifying. But right on. It's still an unusual coping technique, but whatever helps externalize one's insecurities and allow them to regain some measure of control.
@biodorkus2 жыл бұрын
@@bradleymay5350 The lyrics to Jumpsuit hit different knowing that. In the video Blurryface/Nico applies the black to Tyler's neck when he captures him, and afterwards Tyler sings "I'll be right there... but you'll have to grab my throat and lift me in the air. ... I'll stop my plans. But you'll have to tie me down and then break both my hands." In their recent concerts during Message Man he brought out what I'm guessing was a bowl of warm wax and dipped his hands in to coat them in black. 🤯

Twenty One pilots genre is a self-titled genre called schizophrenic pop which basically means their majority pop that's what they tend to sit around however their music tends to not fully fit into pop giving it kind of its own category as it bounces around with all sorts of different inspiration. Unlike a lot of musicians Tyler doesn't set out to make a genre of music he sets out to make music itself he makes art because it helps him deal with anxieties or there are things he wants to get out or there are things he wants to say to tell his fans to tell the people the world certain views that he has or the way he's feeling about certain things and sometimes a specific genre doesn't quite fit for something. You're always going to fall short if you build yourself boundaries before you start creating art

The concept of the video is dreaming about childhood. The scene where they are in beds and their families are around them screaming, "wake up you need to make money," is reality and everything else in the video, them in their hometown, hanging out in each other's houses, drinking caprisun's and riding big wheels, is their dreams about their childhood, when they had zero responsibilities, that they wish they could go back.

Well, you've discovered the Harry Mack rabbit hole...and the Aurora rabbit hole...now you have the TOP rabbit hole to explore. These guys are straight FIRE in every way. Edited to add: TOP is their own genre. It's kind of impossible to categorize them any other way. Also edited to add: I had a shitty childhood myself, but this song makes me nostalgic for something I never really had, if that makes sense. Also edited to add: my brother-in-law used to play shows with TOP before they were nationally known (he was in a different band but they played concerts together).

Yeah, sometimes nostalgia can be even more powerful thinking back on a childhood that you wish you had 😕 That’s cool about your brother-in-law! I’ve heard they’ve always been pretty down to earth. Their live shows are so good.

@@GarnetJ For sure. TOP is from Columbus Ohio (where Ohio State University is and has a thriving music scene) and my BIL lived in Cincinnati which is around two hours away. Some promoter put these summer concert series together with TOP and my BIL's band. It was a sort of pop-punk early 2000's band and they were pretty popular in Cincinnati at the time. Nobody knew that TOP was going to make it that big. They were just two guys making music and trying to break out of the Columbus scene. Pretty crazy stuff.
