Not a single one of those 47 ( or Dan Akroyd) got a single dime for making this song. They did it all for charity. I feel like today is artists wouldn't be able to take the time out of their busy schedule to get together for this so it wouldn't be able to be done together in one room like this song was the parts would have to be done separately if they could check their egos at the door and if they didn't expect to be paid. I was working in radio at the time this song was released. It was a huge deal. One of the things that has been largely forgotten since the release of this record is that every radio station in America -- regardless of format -- stopped and played this song at the same time. The record was embargoed from airplay, and when it popped, you could go up and down your radio dial and virtually every single station was playing it, all at once. What a debut! And then right about that same time, there was the "Hands Across America," where people from coast-to-coast stood in a long line, holding hands, to form a continuous chain of humanity from the Atlantic to the Pacific. A friend of mine and I were playing golf that day, and we broke our round short to go stand in that line on Highway 80 West in Arlington, Texas (in the Dallas/Fort Worth metroplex) just to say we were part of it. Those were pretty amazing times.

It'd be tough to replicate this today. There was an attempt in '94 for Haiti, but it didn't feel the same; didn't feel unified. The sign on the way in said "Leave Your Egos At The Door"; no one tried to outshine eachother, they just tried to do the song & service justice. Also, Quincy Jones is the MVP, here. His arrangement of solos, duets, and harmonies are what make this so incredible.

I watched this live on TV. We taped it on our VCR and I watched it over and over again. I was about 7 or 8. I'm white and grew up in a mostly white suburb and was obsessed with Michael Jackson. I was rasied to not judge people based on race, sex or sexual orientation and that we were all equal. This was the message I was taught... Better times.

To add a bit; The USA project was initiated by Harry Belafonte. He & Ken Kragen (talent manager, activist & fundraiser) were in charge. They chose Quincy to direct & produce, chose MJ & Lionel to write it, obtained the talent, facilities, etc. Harry definitely could have had a solo, but I imagine he wanted to showcase the popular artists of the day, to raise the most money.

I loved watching your reaction as much as enjoyed watching We Are The World live along with the rest of the world back in 1985. Of course I am from a different generation. It is adorable that you have no idea who many of the artists are. They were the tops in their field at the time. You should look up information about the recording, and who the artist were. I think you will be surprised that you have probably heard a lot of their music, if you had ever listened to classic rock. These were wonderful times back then when we did not have so many of the struggles that the world is experiencing now. Thing most people don't know is that the artists were asked to join in at an award show so this was started around 1am and didn't finish till after 6am. No one was paid, they volunteered their time. Unfortunately half of the artists here have passed away.

The Making Of video puts me in awe of the stamina of these artists. So many of them coming straight from an awards show; others flying in just to make this video. Music they've neither seen nor heard til they got in the studio. Michael tirelessly demo singing parts of it til his peers get the melody straight. Consummate professionals, masters of their craft, putting conviction into their voices!
