This wasn't just a song. It was an EVENT! MJ, Stevie and the great Quincy Jones (director) wrote this and got the artists together after the Grammy Awards show. They were told by Quincy to leave their egos at the door. This was all gratis by the artists and performed to raise money for the famine that was causing thousands upon thousand to die of starvation in Ethiopia and surrounding areas. "Let's start giving". Money flowed in phone lines immediately after this was aired on MTV. MTV was in it's infancy as the first and only 24 hour all music video channel and this helped propel the channel. MTV had heavily publicized this video for several days before releasing it. It was played at the same time worldwide so the world stood still watching this. It was all the talk for days after and everyone was in awe that so many icons showed up for the recording. It was very successful and raised millions and food and medical supplies were delivered very quickly. Sadly much of what was sent was never delivered to those in need due to the corrupt governments in Africa. As for the talent in that room there had to be well over 100 #1 hit songs and hundreds of top 100 songs in that room. You just played Simon and Garfunkle yesterday and Paul Simon was the third voice right after Stevie and just before Kenny Rogers. This video will be around forever as nothing like it, with this many icons will probably never happen again.
@wnsafford18542 жыл бұрын
The event was organized by Harry Belafonte & Ken Kragen, who brought Quincy, MJ, Stevie, etc. on board. Harry & Ken chose MJ & Lionel Richie to write the song & Quincy to conduct & produce it. The musicians & core vocalist's recorded 1st at Kenny Rogers' recording studio. The "group" recorded at A&M Studio, after The AMA/American Music Awards.

Quincy jones is the most "do nothing" producer in the history of music. Look at the liner notes on any album that he produced (or took full credit for) and see what he actually contributed and you'll be surely disappointed. The one talent he did have was hiring the right people to do All the things he couldn't. with the exception that he refused to allow the True Genius himself, Prince, at the Height of his popularity here, to do the guitar solo he offered for this. Now Babyface? Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis, teddy Riley..... Those are producers!

Just kind of on a binge of "We are the world" reactions. Everyone in the last, say, 4 or 5 years is very much emphasizing that these different people came together! Watching you two, it emphasizes the totetherness you represent! I remember the time when this record came out. And it was incredible and took a number one spot in charts around the world! However, that was first and foremost because it was and still is a really great piece of music, secondly because of the cause. That everyone at that time had to come together in the same room to produce this kind of work and this video ... was considered an effort but kind of a matter of course. So it hardly played a role. But it is the time we have now that makes it significant. Thanks! I love your commentary!
