USA For Africa was a fundraiser single for famine relief in Africa. The song was written by Lionel Ritchie and Michael Jackson. The project was started by Harry Belafonte in response to the British charity song "Do They Know It's Christmas" with British artists. So many of these legends are no longer with us now. This song never fails to stir me! There is a full documentary here on KZbin about the making of this video. It happened after an awards show and that's why all of the artists were together. Quincy Jones put a sign on the door that told the artists to "leave their egos at the door". Even if you don't react to it I recommend watching it.

Well, Dan Aykroyd wasn’t at the music award show. He just happened to be in town, looking to hire a new business manager. He accidentally ended up at talent agent’s office, who tipped him off about this. Dan thought it sounded interesting, so he showed up, and ended up in the choir between none other than Harry Belafonte and Lindsey Buckingham. And why not? After all, he’s Elwood Blues.

It has current artists at that time singing the parts with a new added verse. It would be worth checking out as well as Do They know it's Christmas from British artists and Tears are not Enough done by Canadian artists! There is also a metal band contribution but I dont remember the song name! These were all great contributions to end world hunger and provide famine relief. It was actually what started the idea for The Live Aid concert about 6 months later. People working together like they should for the good of all humans. ❤❤❤❤❤

Netflix has a documentary on this, "The Greatest Night In Pop," that lays out how they did this and got people to show up. They picked the night of the AMAs (American Music Awards) to record, luring the stars (from many genres) since they were already at the awards. It's an interesting story that explains what went on and the hoops they had to jump through to get the song written and recorded.

Many of the participants came straight from an American Music Awards ceremony that had been held that night. The song “We Are the World” was recorded in 1985 to raise money for USA for Africa, a charity that provides food aid to Africa. The song was released on March 7, 1985, and sold 800,000 copies in its first three days. It ultimately raised more than $60 million for famine relief in Africa, with 90% of the money going to long-term and short-term relief efforts. Long-term initiatives included food production and birth control programs. The project has also funded more than 500 African organizations in 21 countries. George Harrison of the BEatles really started this idea with his charity concerts in 1971 called the Concert for Bangla Dash...that was filmed an dis available STILL to watch.

JAMES INGRAM! Hes the singer there towards the end who was singing with Ray Charles and you asked Who that is. He was the pinnacle of 80s and early 90s slow R&B, he sang with so much emotion and power, and could go from high to low to high to low again in a single phrase, and make it sound like the smoothest thing you've ever heard. He was protege to Quincy Jones, the legendary producer who made We Are the World become reality, and Ingram was essentially Jones's instrument of choice for the male voice. He had some classic hits from the 80s, my favorite is "Just Once" but also "Find 100 Ways" and his amazing duets with Michael McDonald ("Yah Mo B There"), Dolly Parton ("The Day I Fall in Love"), and Linda Ronstadt ("Somewhere Out There", from the movie An American Tail.)

Now as I watch it i still have tears in my eyes.Today realizing what good they did then, but also realizing i believe 10 have passed since that time. That really puts into reality how lucky I was to see it back then and resee it now. I may be wrong, but i believe everyone was individually selected and the soloists were choosen due the ability ans uniqueness of their voice so most would easily recognize them, as it radio as well as video back then. Quincy Jones had a sign on the studio door that said: "Check your egos at the door and let us sing together and raise money for Africa". Michael Jackson and Lionel Richie wrote this song while Quincy Jones produced it and put the duets (Stevie Wonder and Bruce Springsteen/Ray Charles and James Ingram) . Some of the instrumentalists that played on Off The Wall or Thriller were featured on We are the World like Greg Phillinganes, The Brothers Johnson, and some of the Frank Sinatra band did the violins and violas. To have everyone from Lindsay Buckingham (from Fleetwood Mac) to some of the Jacksons (Marlon, Randy, Jackie, and LaToya), to Sheila E, to Harry Bellefonte to come together and sing not for profit, but because they wanted to give to a charity.

@leeknott2171 The UK were the first to come out with the song 'Do They Know It's Christmas' before 'We Are The World' and the UK did Band Aid for Africa and made more money than the USA.

It was planned after an awards show. They all agreed to participate, after the show. It went late into the night. There’s a utube video of how the song was made.
