If you think it's legendary now allow me to further open your minds eye to how truly awesome this performance is. In an interview done a few years after this amazing show Eddie admitted that he was so drunk during this performance he hardly remembered much beyond being on stage. If that's not excellent then I don't know what could be

@@b3easy261 That story has been circulating since this performance was released. I'll fill you in on the facts. He was drunk and many times he didn't know what city he was in or where he was performing. The performance you just witnessed was not THAT performance. In this performance Eddie is lucid, responsive and his performance flawless. He's not flawless when he's stoned or drunk I've seen him at his worst. He was sober during this show. Sorry to disappoint you I realize he might be your hero but let that be for his ability to play not hold his liquor.

Great reaction, it's always fun to see new people react to King Edward's guitar playing. He grew up broke in Pasadena, CA, where his dad, a pro clarinet/sax player during the big band/swing era, brought his boys, Alex and Eddie along on gigs to make what money they could. Ed was actually a major introvert, so crippled by stage fright that his dad gave him a beer and a cigarette at the age of 9. Maybe not the best parenting ever, but it helped Ed to get out and perform. The brothers were forced to take classical piano lessons by mom, Eugenia, who was Indonesian. She wanted her boys to become "respectable musicians" . Ed never learned to read sheet music, but could play anything by ear, and so fooled his teacher that way for three years. Then the boys heard Glad All Over by the Dave Clark Five, and they decided they wanted to jump around the stage and play rock and roll. Ed bought drums, Al started guitar lessons, but their interest and abilities forced a switch. All the weird noises you heard Ed play were the product of necessity and poverty. He couldn't afford fancy effects pedals, so he cobbled together a guitar that didn't exist along with a style of playing that he invented, a ferocious work ethic he learned from his dad, and got busy. After high school, he and Alex went into music full-time, their only other job prospect being baggage handlers at the airport. After several years of grinding out the club scene, backyard parties, bar mitzvahs, quinceneras, weddings, biker bars, you name it, they were discovered by Gene Simmons of KISS. Gene flew them out to NYC to cut a demo and take some professional publicity photos, but the label balked at the idea, and the Van Halens went back to LA a little wiser, but no closer to being signed. They stuck it out anyway, and eventually released their debut album through Warner Brothers, and changed the ENTIRE Rock Landscape overnight. Van Halen's wild success made other labels take notice, and suddenly there were VH wannabe bands sprouting left and right. By 1984, the Hair Metal movement had begun to take hold, and thanks to $400 and some ingenuity from lead singer, David Lee Roth, the band made a video to go with their biggest hit, Jump. The brand- new channel, MTV ran that video every 15-20 minutes, along with Michael Jackson's Beat It, which Ed played a solo on-for free! After Jump, even keyboards changed, adding a preset imitation of the sound Ed had used for his biggest hit. From 1978 to 2015, Van Halen toured as often as health and band politics would allow. Ed's health sadly deteriorated through 2019, and with advanced experimental cancer treatments in Germany out of reach due to covid restrictions, we lost a musical genius who seemed like everybody's best buddy on October 6, 2020. Please check out Van Halen's ENTIRE first album, as it is pure, explosive, inventive rock n roll like you've never heard. Cheers!

King Edward! He was the greatest EVER. I've been listening to them since '78, and STILL listen to them daily. Their debut album was just insane. Eddie singlehandedly reinvented rock & roll guitar. He was also an amazing pianist, and won many national awards as a youth in Amsterdam (before moving to CA). Guitar virtuoso, killer songwriter, inventor (he holds a US patent on one guitar device), innovator, awesome performer...Ed was the real deal. And nobody, NOBODY had more fun or showed the pure joy that he did when he performed. I got to see them live 3 times (twice with Dave, once with Sammy), and he was absolutely amazing. His brother, by the way, was (& still is) a monster drummer. They formed the nucleus of VH. Oh...and Edward's son, Wolfgang, is also an incredible musician in his own right...check out Wolfie's tune "Don't Back Down." Wow!! I exhort you guys to do a deep dive into VH...SO much excellent music!!!

Eddie was always exploring new ways to find new sounds, its one of the reasons he is so iconic and creative. His son, Wolfgang, can play eruption just as well as good old dad did, plus jump on the drums and bass since he mastered them as well, and played in Van Halen with his father and uncle. Van Halen IS a group...thus the drummer, the singer, who stated he was going to take a break during Eddie's solo and the bassist lurking in the background. This was actually the Van Hagar iteration with Sammy Hagar on vocals. I recommend you start your journey with the original line up, Van Halen with David Lee Roth on vocals. In fact, start at the very beginning and listen to the album version of Eruption leading into You Really Got Me. This solo is known as the Eruption solo because it has portions of the song sprinkled throughout. It is comprised of several other well known VH riffs and solos. The original Eruption is only 2 minutes long, but it's nasty and has no down time. Definitely worth a listen.

Great reaction to Eddie and the Eruption solo. He was such a virtuoso and it was always obvious how much he loved playing. As someone who grew up in this era, some of those sounds were instantly recognizable as EVH, even if they were done as a guest artist, because no one else made those sounds with a guitar. Different genre, but another famous, mind blowing, guitar performance is the classic Stevie Ray Vaughan performance of Texas Flood live at the El Mocambo.

I was in college from 1977-1980, and on Concert Crew. We put on concerts in our gym and downtown at Memorial Hall and at the State Fair. We did bands like George Thorogood, 38 Special, Jefferson Starship, and Van Halen. The Van Halen show was on March 30, 1980. They had just come out with Van Halen II, and were starting their tour. They did a few warm-up shows before the tour began. The third was at the University Of Southern Colorado, our school. The contract called for a bowl of m&m's in their refreshments, but no brown ones. They called for that so they could tell immediately if we had read the entire contract. Their stage show came in 8 semi's and weighed so much that it required special foundation support. Well, there were brown m&m's in the bowl, we hadn't read the contract carefully, the stage sunk into our brand new basketball flooring and ruined it, the band trashed our Student Center, and we were banned from holding concerts on campus for a year. True story. Our 15 minutes of infamy. Yup, the legend of the brown m&m's took place at USC in Pueblo, CO, and I was there.

I was 9 years old when Edward first melted my face. The year was 1979. The cool local rock station played Eruption>You Really Got Me one Saturday afternoon, and I was done. Van Halen immediately became my favorite band and remains so to this day. It's incredible that a guitar solo he played in New Haven, Connecticut in 1985 is still melting faces today. His presence changed the entire course of rock music in the 80s. Every band had to have a guitar hero, and they all wanted to sound like Eddie Van Halen. Alas, there can be only one, and he is the greatest of all time.

Eddie's smile says it all, He loves what he is doing. He plays with a smile as if he is a child playing with his favorite toy. He spent hours upon hours from childhood playing with this toy. He and his brother were trained musicians as their father was a musician. He took formal piano lessons. He bought drums and wanted to be a drummer and Alex got a guitar. Eventually, they were each drawn to the other's instrument and switched. He took no guitar lessons, but he was a musician. So, he self-taught himself guitar, but made his own way. He played with it and experimented for hours to see what sounds he could get out of it from using it in all kinds of ways. He modified and eventually built his guitars to make them so he could get different sounds. He was poor and had no money for amps and such so had to make the guitar sounds without the help of other equipment. He was a musical genius like Mozart and Beethoven. He showed and reinvented how to play the guitar. You did not have to use it in the traditional way. He used it in unconventional ways and changed the way future guitarist think of the guitar and how it should be played.

Eddie's fretboard stretch was HUGE! 5th to 12th COMFORTABLY!! That's like 7 inches! He had BIG hands, especially for a guy that was 5' 8".

Eruption was a short, intense solo/intro from the first album. As the band released new albums, there always seemed to be at least one song where Eddie would be very unique and experimental compared to the typical music of the time. This live version is a combination of all those together. Also - Eddie taught everyone how to play air guitar.

My same reaction when i first heard him as a teenager in 1978, a lot of mouth open, mind blown, a big question, HOW? I was blown away and rock guitar has never been the same. RIP Eddie the legend.

When VanHalen hit in 1978 it was with a sledgehammer. Nobody was playing guitar like Eddie at that time , with his older brother Alex on drums , Michael Anthony on bass and frontman David Lee Roth on vocals they set a fire to guitar players around the world.

I saw Eddie do pretty much this same solo during this same tour back in 1986, the summer after I graduated high school. Remember it like it was yesterday. I really enjoyed your guys' reaction. I kinda got a vicarious thrill from seeing someone experience it for the first time.

I really love these reaction videos. I have seen several lately of people who have never heard Eddie shred on his guitar. I get to relive the first time I heard him play Eruption when I was 11 years old. I couldn't believe it back then, and I have been trying to wrap my mind around the absolute mastery for 43 years. Another great guitarist, Steve Vai, said, "There have been a lot of great guitarists, but only two game changers, Jimi Hendrix and Eddie Van Halen." I think that says it all. Thank you for the video.

The truly amazing thing is they started in the late 70’s during disco. The final part is him just jamming with his volume control. Yes he had a lot of signature guitars, but he made so many of his own icon guitars. He was the first of his kind.
