What you just witnessed was the greatest guitarist of our time. In the early 70’s there wasn’t a guitar on the market to do what he wanted. So he took the humbucker out of a Gibson and chiseled out a stray after removing the pickups and installed it in there. His amps used a variable voltage device to control the volume. This way the amp would be all the way up without being too loud but you get feedback. This invention would be known as the Frankenstrat guitar and his tone was known as the brown sound. By the early 80’s every elctric guitar manufacturer was doing this. And a lot of of guitarist was copying this sound. Or let’s say chasing this sound. In actuality the tone comes from the fingers through the mind. His influence is still being heard by young musicians in all types of music. He is the “Goat” Mozart,Beethoven,Bach Edward Van Halen he fits right in there. Check out the video “ Van Halen Live 1981 Oakland coliseum” it’s 14 min with 3 songs “Hear about it later, This is love & Unchained” you’ll absolutely love it. It shows the energy they brought to the stage. Good reaction and video.

He built that guitar to the specifations that he wanted by experimenting with different necks and pickups thats why it sounded like a violin and many different sounds. He also used to practice 12hrs a day. His brother plays the drums. and the guitarist started playing drums and the drummer started playing guitar when they were kids until they switched instruments HE IS THE KING OF GUITAR PLAYERS

Eddie actually learned to play piano first, long before he switched to guitar! He also composed most of the songs that VanHalen recorded on a piano. Also he played piano and organ on the 5150 album, along with the Guitar! Super Talent at it's Best! RIP to this Legend.

The one thing I don't see anymore are classic garage bands like Van Halen. They began by forming a local group and practiced out of their southern California garages. Love the engagement, Vex - You are experiencing this from a first time, singular perspective. For those that lived through it, 15 years straight (and more), this guy was The Man. He (and the band, but it was him) was a staple for top-end rock. From 1978 on, they kept coming out with hammer after hammer album productions. Eddie was different than other "shredders" because he just had this innate musicality that made his shredding sound almost pretty. Just imagine some crazy musician in 2015 producing an experimental, yet head banging, ground breaking set of songs. Then, he continuously does so through 2030-35. You are looking back and there are a lot of songs, compositions, history, breakups/makeups, new lead singers....but there was always EVH to guaranty you got your money's worth.

1. You asked if he was tuning the guitar while playing. No. He was plucking the strings near the tuning knobs. 2. You asked how he was making his guitar sound like a cello ("violin"). Watch him carefully. It's a combination of knob work, reverb, _and likely a pedal setting._

Growing up in that era, I was a child and I remember hearing the sounds, and thinking it came from a synthesizer (computer keyboard) Later heard their songs on the radio and was just a fan Not until watcing these "reactions" did I understand the sounds came from one guy and his modified guitar And yes he has tapped into something I haven't quite understood, that some of the rave DJ's in more recent times can do too. Naw he was hitting the springs on the tremolo system and plucking the still tensioned strings behind the lock on the headstock! It’s friggen nuts and it infuriates me it stays in tune the whole time😂😂 And he’s using the volume knob to go from 0 volume to like 1-2 volume, then back to off…Another thing that’s just insane😂The things Eddie thought of to do on guitar is just out of this world!(I’ve been playing guitar for nearly 30 years and there’s a lot of EVH stuff I won’t even attempt…Just for inspiration, he’s not someone you can truly emulate, he was one of a kind!

You just watched "King Edward" as his fans prefer to refer to him by. Eddie was self taught how to play the guitar when his big brother got better at the drums though he was so he took Alex's guitar and music for all eternity was suddenly changed into something that no one had ever heard before. Eddie learned the piano as child along with his brother. When the band came onto the music scene in the 70's no one had ever heard the things that Eddie was able to play and do with his guitar. He did not invent "tapping" , the hitting the guitar strings with his fingers. But he was the first one to ever use the 2 finger "tapping" technique and he has the only one to perfect it. You should listen to their early songs like "Mean Streets" and "Running with the devil" and when the lead singer quit the big and they got Sammy Hagar to sing the music changed but in many ways it got even better. Listen to "Hot for teacher & Jump then listen to a newer song like"Poundcake or5150."As a Van Halen to life you can not go wrong listening to any of their music. Eddie was a musical prodigy and an absolute genius when it came to music. Listen to Michael Jackson's song "BEAT IT" Eddie wrote and performed the guitar solo that you hear in the song. He even said that he had to rearrange the song for the guitar solo to make the show "flow" better. For most people Eddie is and will always be the GOAT when it comes to the guitar. Listen to songs "Little guitars" and "Spanish fly". Eddie was absolutely incredible!!! please check out more of Van Halen the band. I am very happy that you saw this video!!!!
