One of the guys said something about the value of the guitar. I’m not sure if it’s that one specifically, but, he built what is known as the “Frankenstrat”. He does have some or maybe one that looks similar from a distance. But, the Frankenstrat is the only one that exists. I’ve wondered what it would fetch at auction. No one will ever know. Thankfully, his son and brother have all that stuff and would never let it go.

I’m 55 now but saw tons of live shows throughout the 80’s. Saw Van Halen three times and each time Eddie would do some kind of crazy guitar thing halfway through the show. He was a literal guitar god. He and his brother (Alex on drums) were born in the Netherlands and came to US with their parents as young children. English is not their native language (there are videos on YT of Eddie and Alex doing interviews speaking Dutch) so not only were they born musically gifted, they speak English as well as any native. Eddie also played the piano very well and would play it as well as guitar in live shows. Eddies only child, Wolfgang Van Halen inherited his father’s musical gift and plays bass and guitar in his own band. Eddie was one of a kind and his death made the rock world a little less bright. I’m glad I got to see them live before he died. But he never suffered with carpal tunnel. He was playing as much as ever up until his cancer got him too sick to do much of anything.

It's called a swell, you hammer on the note (Use the fingers hitting the strings on the fret board to vibrate the string) and with your picking hand you turn the volume knob up and down in time with your notes. The slower attack(build up of the note) gives it the sound reminiscent of a cello. Eddy was an encyclopedia of variant techniques for playing guitar.

Not true. The solo was engineered by Ted Templeman and when Eddy heard the playback the next day he got pissed and then told Ted to play it back again. The way that 'song' appears on the album is not Eddy. He told Ted "Now I have to learn it." He went on to say that the audience would be missed if he didn't play it just like on the album. That's how his music is, what you heard on the album, CD or digital download, you heard it exactly the same, live in concert

They may have “tapped” but no one was tapping like Ed before he did it. He is the OG of his style. No one played guitar like him until after he did it. Of course he had influences like every guitarist but he reinvented the way people would approach the guitar for generations to come. He “popularized” tapping because he did it like no one else. When eruption came out, no one had heard anything quite like it before. That’s why eruption is considered one of the most influential guitar solos of all time.
