Vanessa Williams was the first African American Miss America back in 1984. She wowed the judges with her singing prowess. She became a major female vocalist in the 80s/90s and actress. Beautiful singer, pretty underrated

Extremely underrated indeed Samuel. Vanessa is SO MUCH MORE than just a pretty face!!! She's a fantastic actress and a phenomenal singer as well. Like you said her singing prowess can't be denied. I've loved this song since it came out 31 years ago and I love it even more now. Wonderful and magical in every way. Thank you LORD for Vanessa.

@@Wushock there is only one race, the human race. I dont want to give you a detailed lecture about DNA but ... We came from Adam & Eve or whatever 2 first humans you want to believe in (who evolved first, man or woman ? Truth is both had to be together there at once. We are devolving and not evolving. Look at a wolf and a poodle, you can tell its the same kind of animal but the poodle has lost alot of information, thats not evolution, thats devolution). They had the perfect gene pool and probably were brown. Children are a recombination of genes from their mother and father and you pretty quickly get all kind of variety. Now if 2 come together who were born white then they lost the ability to reproduce brown/black babys and thats it. There really isnt any real difference between us, we are all one blood. For example the color of your skin is dictated by how much melanin you produce but every human has it, some more and some less. Dividing races is a concept by the "Elites" to control us and to keep us down (divide & conquer). When 2 billionaires meet and one is black and one white they dont care, they just make business. Just the stupid masses always and everyday make an issue out of it, fueled by mass media ....

The song, "Save The Best For Last", had originally been written for Steve Perry of the rock band Journey. He passed it by. It was then reworked for a female singer and marketed to Bette Midler, Whitney Houston, and Barbra Streisand, who all turned it down. Then, it went to Vanessa Williams and it became her breakaway hit song of 1991 and 1992 and beyond. There is an entire episode of the free podcast, "Where Were You In '92" devoted to this song and features additional inside information and an interview with Vanessa herself. That tells the story of this enormously popular song that resonates to the present.

This song will be a classic forever: the face, the voice, the lyrics & soundtrack. I heard this song played loudly at a hardware store today and just was lost in the song and the memories again. I hasn't been mentioned but I really like the striking use of the double bass. It first comes in strongly at 1:40 in the video. Then its placed perfectly in various places to give added a courser texture giving a flavorful punchy counterbalance to the rest of the very smooth instruments in this composition. The double bass is one of the last instruments heard at the fade out too. I like your description at 2:14, "Christmas vibes" and "sprinkling of stardust". For me, the instruments and lyrics in this soundtrack is maybe like tasting Christmas nutmeg for the first time.
