Oh Lord--NOTHING compares like watching him trying to sing this at George Jones' funeral. He was BAWLING up on that stage and couldn't even finish the song. Patti Loveless was singing and comforting him at the same time. Seeing the audience stand up and crying at the end is incredible. Absolutely love Vince Gill.

My sweet little momma planned her own funeral, she didn’t want it messed up, this was the song she wanted played. Several years before she passed I was working security at the arena, Vince Gill came, my momma has never been to a concert, I brought her to see the show, she fell in love with him & this song. I still smile then cry when I hear it. I miss her every single day..

When my husband died almost 11 years ago I had this played at his funeral. It is my understanding that this song has replaced Amazing Grace as the number one song played at funerals. It is perhaps not surprising that I get as teary when I hear it today as I did on the day of my husband's funeral. It is a beautiful song and Vince's voice is hauntingly beautiful so how could you not love the song? I heard that Vince was so emotional over this song that he intended to write it for his brother and either sing it or have it sung at his brother's funeral and then never have to perform it again. His record company talked him into recording it which he reluctantly did but he did so believing that because the song was so highly personal to him it just wouldn't appeal to other people and no one else would want to hear it. To his chagrin, not only do average people like me want it played at the funeral of a loved one but when a member of the country music community dies Vince is always asked to perform it live at that funeral as well. I will never forget how much Vince struggled trying to make it through this song at George Jones' funeral. To Vince, George was not only a great country music singer, he was also a close personal friend and Vince had a terrible time trying to keep from crying. He was not successful. God bless Patty Loveless who tried her best to help him through .

Billy, I have been a fan of, and followed your channel for quite a few years. I have never really had the words to express how I feel about a reaction - and then there was this song. My mom and I lived together for 44 years - for the first 25 years she took care of me as here daughter and then for the next 22 years I took care of her until she left for me for her Father’s arms. I had this song played at her celebration of life. I replaced every “Son” for “Mama.” I just had want you to know how much your reaction impacted me. I especially was thinking of not only family members you may have had to say goodbye to but your military brothers. Love and light to you ❤️

My mother passed away 2 weeks ago. I took care of her the last 2 years. I haven't cried yet... haven't grieved. The explosion is coming. Don't know when, or how. It just builds and screams inside me. I know God's Word better than most, know she sleeps, to rise when the Lord returns... but it damn sure hurts for now. I appreciate your vids; as a vet, it does my heart good to get your take on things. I also know, by sharing my heart here, some will join me while I work through this, and understand where my heart is at, and grieve with me. Thanks, everybody, in advance. I love and appreciate you.

Vince started writing this song when country music star Keith Whitley died and finished it when his brother died. Keith is well known for his song "I'm No Stranger To The Rain" which is one of the first lines in this song. Keith lived about half an hour from me and we all grieved when he died. Keith will always be a treasured memory. It's a gift for all to be able to hear a beautiful tribute to both men.

Man, Billy! This song has always made me think of my Grandfather. His death is probably the one that had the most emotional impact on me in my lifetime. But I also heard my dad sing it once in a church that had recently lost their beloved pastor. Tuesday, Dad found out he has inoperable cancer. I don't know long before this song has another sad connection in my heart. If you read this and happen to be talking to God in the near future and think to mention my dad or our family, I'd be appreciative.

Takes a 💪 man to cry! Like when someone passes,a 💔, etc! This was 1of 3 songs played at my daddy's funeral. Drift Away by Dobie Gray was another, it was 1 of his favorites!

I lost my little brother 14 years ago. This played over and over in my world even still today. He was 32. It’s was quick. We were talking on Friday night and my mom was calling me Monday morning. I was with a patient. I quickly went from being the nurse to needing help. I was on my knees in the hall. I’m glad to see younger people listening to these older songs to help through some of our darkest hours.

The original with Patti Loveless and Ricky as the backups is a bit better but this is an amazing song. The only cover I've heard that comes even close to the emotion of the original is Home Free's cover.

The original will always be the best version to me. The harmonies are glorious!! Vince's vocal is perfection. The background video gives it a haunting and heavenly feel to it.

This is one of the only two covers on Home Free's "Dive Bar Saints" album. And they totally "get" the song's meaning and emotion. They also slip in a little surprise that completely fits as if Vince Gill himself told them to do it. Give it a listen, you won't be disappointed.

There is a fantastic video of Home Free singing this song as part of Country Rebel’s The Church Sessions. It was recorded live in one take at a church in Nashville. The acoustics are so good...it’s the perfect live recording. I’ve seen them sing it at several concerts and Chance had a difficult time getting through it...he had to keep his eyes closed throughout the song.

Vince Gill has the best voice in country music period! You can literally listen to ANY song by him and fall in love with his voice plus the raw emotion he sings with is crazy!
