My sweet little momma planned her own funeral, she didn’t want it messed up, this was the song she wanted played. Several years before she passed I was working security at the arena, Vince Gill came, my momma has never been to a concert, I brought her to see the show, she fell in love with him & this song. I still smile then cry when I hear it. I miss her every single day..

When my husband died almost 11 years ago I had this played at his funeral. It is my understanding that this song has replaced Amazing Grace as the number one song played at funerals. It is perhaps not surprising that I get as teary when I hear it today as I did on the day of my husband's funeral. It is a beautiful song and Vince's voice is hauntingly beautiful so how could you not love the song? I heard that Vince was so emotional over this song that he intended to write it for his brother and either sing it or have it sung at his brother's funeral and then never have to perform it again. His record company talked him into recording it which he reluctantly did but he did so believing that because the song was so highly personal to him it just wouldn't appeal to other people and no one else would want to hear it. To his chagrin, not only do average people like me want it played at the funeral of a loved one but when a member of the country music community dies Vince is always asked to perform it live at that funeral as well. I will never forget how much Vince struggled trying to make it through this song at George Jones' funeral. To Vince, George was not only a great country music singer, he was also a close personal friend and Vince had a terrible time trying to keep from crying. He was not successful. God bless Patty Loveless who tried her best to help him through .

Billy, I have been a fan of, and followed your channel for quite a few years. I have never really had the words to express how I feel about a reaction - and then there was this song. My mom and I lived together for 44 years - for the first 25 years she took care of me as here daughter and then for the next 22 years I took care of her until she left for me for her Father’s arms. I had this song played at her celebration of life. I replaced every “Son” for “Mama.” I just had want you to know how much your reaction impacted me. I especially was thinking of not only family members you may have had to say goodbye to but your military brothers. Love and light to you ❤️

Vince started writing this song when country music star Keith Whitley died and finished it when his brother died. Keith is well known for his song "I'm No Stranger To The Rain" which is one of the first lines in this song. Keith lived about half an hour from me and we all grieved when he died. Keith will always be a treasured memory. It's a gift for all to be able to hear a beautiful tribute to both men.

Man, Billy! This song has always made me think of my Grandfather. His death is probably the one that had the most emotional impact on me in my lifetime. But I also heard my dad sing it once in a church that had recently lost their beloved pastor. Tuesday, Dad found out he has inoperable cancer. I don't know long before this song has another sad connection in my heart. If you read this and happen to be talking to God in the near future and think to mention my dad or our family, I'd be appreciative.
