This song is how I found Voiceplay...and I've been hooked ever since. Everything they do is gold. Just fall down the rabbit hole....you won't be sorry! And each of the guys take the lead at different times. Just in this song, a deep voice was needed for Oogie Boogie. You will see other songs where other guys take the lead, and of course their lineup has changed over the years. Earl (the big guy with the beard and the super high-pitched voice) left the group, and J. None (the lovely baritone) joined the navy but still pops in and works with them whenever on leave. :) Eli (pronounced "Elly") the little bald insane rockstar tenor, is still with them, and Layne (vocal percussion beatboxing voodoo master who also has a beautiful singing voice we rarely get to hear) does about half the arranging, and arranged this one as well. Geoff also does about half the arranging, though Eli recently arranged "Creep" from Radiohead which is F*CKING BRILLIANT! (just sayin') and their newest member, Cesar De La Rosa, is not in this video as he wasn't in the group yet, but he is a sassy, awesome baritone/tenor who will make you cry when he gets emotional. They are a fantastic group!

Oogie Boogie is a great intro, but is very Geoff focused. I would say you can't go wrong with anything of theirs. VP doesnt have a regular front man as such and the "lead" is given to whoever it suits best

This was Voiceplay's first video where Geoff really took the lead and he did the Ooogie Boogie voice for this song. Shortly after this on his own channel he did Headless Horseman where he speaks/sings like Thurl Ravenscroft. He has the ability to voice act to different styles and also has his own sound.

the members of VoicePlay have had some member changes over the year, but the ones you will always come across is: -Geoff: bass and one of the two main arrangers of the group. -Layne: beatboxer and one of the two main arrangers of the group. -Eli: bald rock tenor, lighting designer, occasional arranger, also creates digital backgrounds for greenscreen. the newest member is Cesar, a latino baritenor. In older videos you might come across other members like J.None (black guy, baritone), Earl (big buff guy with a very high tenor voice) or Tony (baritenor with fabulous eyebrows). Since VoicePlay is one member short now since Earl left a few years ago, they are using guest singers to fill in the 5th slot in their videos. So it might be a bit confusing in the start with all the different people you come across 🙂

Welcome to Voiceplay! 😁 Yep, this is lots of fun, yet it isn't the best first way to be introduced to Voiceplay, IMHO. 🙂 First, there are a lot of "character voices", which may be a great example of their technical vocal mastery, but doesn't make justice to their incredible versatility and prowess at whatever style you throw at them And second, it's maybe the only video in their catalogue where there is ONE of them (in this case Geoff) who has the lead pretty much all the time. Usually, they have a super-well balanced distribution of the lead and every single on of them has his space to shine, which is something that I simply LOVE about them. 🙂 Now, Voiceplay (and, on his channel, Geoff) simply OWN Halloween 😁. They always have some especially crafted stuff around Halloween, and they're ALWAYS great. 🙂 But if you want to really experience their incredible musical skills, you've got to explore other areas of their production. You said you're into metal. Well, then, you could try there a cappella version of Metallica's "Nothing else matters", and you're in for a treat. You would probably like their "Vikings" couple releases: "My Mother told me", from both the TV series "Vikings" and the game "Assassins Creed V - Valhalla", and its natural follow up "Valhalla calling", where Eli (rhymes with "jelly"), the bald rock tenor, shows off (and earned the title of "Asgard's God of Rock"). You want something more melodic and emotional? Try their covers of Radiohead's "Creep", "I can't make you love me", "Can't help falling in love", or the super-cute yet somehow weird "Golden hour". Oh, you like epic video games? No problem, try their version of "The Dragonborn comes - Skyrim", or "Halo theme" (to be watched and listened to the very end, you'll learn something about them as human beings and about why they did that particular video). I'd also suggest "In the hall of the Mountain King", a classical instrumental from Edvard Grieg's "Peer Gynt", that they turned into a hilarious, yet virtuosistic, fantasy story without words but a lot of storytelling. And anyway, choose whatever you want from their channel. It's all fantastic. 🙂 See you next time!

This is just about the only song where Geoff has full lead in a VoicePlay song, so yeah, probably not the best song to pick for getting to know VoicePlay, lol. But, it does show off their character voices, which they do in a few songs. Normally, they have no lead in their songs. Depending on the song they might have one person be a bit more featured than the others, like Eli (the bald guy) might have a more prominent role in rock songs since he is a rock tenor. But for the most part they adapt their voices, their acting and their leads to what suits the song. This song features a very limited example of some of their character voices, they are all talented voice actors. Their Nightmare Before Christmas songs often have character voices as that fits the nature of the songs. Some good recommendations would be Creep, Drunken Sailor, Valhalla Calling, Nothing Else Matters, Seven Nation Army, Enemy, We Don't Talk About Bruno, Halo, Wicked, Hoist The Colours, Carry On Wayward Son.... Ok, I'm just writing up their whole playlist at this point, lol. Just pick whatever you want, it's all awesome! 😂😂

I also love the Nightmare Before Christmas and this was my introduction to VoicePlay. I feel you, girl! We need to start celebrating it earlier! They were singing in character voices (and doing it in tune) for this one. If you like Metallica, they covered "Nothing Else Matters" a few months back and it's amazing! If you love Halloween, you've got to see (and hopefully react to) Voiceplay's cover of "Hide and Seek" ("Ding Dong!"). It's absolutely fabulous. VoicePlay and Geoff has done a number of Halloween covers (see Geoff's cover of "The Headless Horseman" and "Monster Mash"). This song did require more character voices than a lot of their other songs, but they do do a lot of character voices (unlike most of the other a capella groups around).

You saw they did 'This Is Halloween', which you should definitely do but they also did an amazing version of 'Grim Grinning Ghosts.' To answer your question about their voices, most of them were doing character voices. You'll see both more of that as well as their normal voices in 'This Is Halloween.'

Haha! It’s okay. Yes, they are brand new to us. I (Taylor) am the only one who’s heard or listened to Pentatonix, and we just discovered Home Free not terribly long ago as well. Home Free and VoicePlay were both on the same season of "The Sing Off," and they're all friends with each other. As for recommendations "Friends on the Other Side" from Disney's Princess and the Frog has their more current line-up (and a different singer in the lead). Halloween is kind of their thing.

Welcome to a new rabbit hole. :) VoicePlay's 2017-2020 lineup, which is what you'll see in a lot of the YT vids, was: Earl Elkins Jr., original member, high tenor; Earl left in 2020 Eli Jacobson, 2nd tenor Jesse Nunn III (professional name JNone), replaced Tony Wakim in 2017, left the group to go into the Navy in 2021 but still performs with VP when he's on leave Layne Stein, beatboxer and occasional baritone, original member (he was the group's original baritone, but switched to percussion when Scott Porter left, a long time ago) Geoff Castellucci, bass, original member Cesar DeLaRosa is a new permanent member as of 2021, classified as a tenor-baritone (he hits the high note on VP's cover of "Dream On"), so it's a tossup whether he replaced JNone or Earl. Either way, they're one member short, and almost all their YT vids since late 2020 have a guest artist, male or female. Yes, the guys were just doing character voices in this vid, as required by the material. To hear their straight singing voices, try "Tennessee Whiskey" or "Can't Help Falling In Love."

About the group: this is an older lineup of singers as only three remain full time…Geoff, who you know, the beat boxer portrayed the dog with the lit up nose and that is Layne Stein and the bald guy is Eli (pronounced Ellie) and that dude has a killer rock tenors voice. Although other comments about 'not the best first VoicePlay video to watch' have valid points, it definitely helps that she came into this knowing the song/context. People who aren't familiar with the movie are very confused and wondering why the heck Santa is tied up, while she was just able to to enjoy a slightly different spin on the original song. (And, of course, able to appreciate Geoff's even lower version of the solo than what was in the movie.) You obviously saw "This is Halloween", they've also covered 'Kidnap the Sandy Claus' and 'What's This?". No, it is not usual for Geoff to be so front and center. If you continue down the VoicePlay rabbit hole, you will find that Eli (the bald guy) is an incredible rock tenor and the amazing beatboxer, Layne, will sometimes also gift us with his sweet baritone instead of just providing drums and sound effects. Two of the guys shown here, Earl and J None, are no longer members of the group (although J has been coming back a lot lately to be a 'featured' performer with them, he is currently serving a stint in the US Navy, was recruited for their choir/chorale). Newest member is Cesar, who brings another soulful voice that ranges from baritone to high tenor. Hope you will check out more VoicePlay, it is more usual for them to give all the members a spot to shine in during a song. Oh, and while they will do some videos with them doing more 'just standing there and singing', they have been nicknamed the 'theater kids of acapella' due to the way they can really get into costumes, makeup and sets for performing their songs. It seems like you were really appreciating it, so hope you will explore more of their work.

And if you're a Skyrim fan, they did the Dragonborn song. For piratey stuff they have covers of "Hoist the Colors" and "Drunken Sailor". VoicePlay is often referred to as the theater kids of Acapella for their amazing sets and costuming and for how they get into character.

They've had several member changes since this. You're going to absolutely love Voiceplay. Their known as both "The Theater Kids of Acapella" and "The Kings of Halloween" because of their love of dressing up and performing. A good percentage of their videos their in heavy makeup. Their newest videos they released this month.... Voiceplay.... Drunken Sailor. Very fun. They have 2 guests in this. Geoff.... Folsom Prison Blues. The man rented a whole prison for this one. At present Voiceplay has 4 members. They collaborate with various artists for the 5th. Layne Stein - beatboxer, baritone, arrangements. Eli (like jelly) Jacobson - tenor, rock tenor, lighting. Cesar De La Rosa - baritone, tenor. Geoff Castelucci - bass, arrangements. Voiceplay are independent so they make all their own decisions and do everything themselves except cameras, heavier makeup and audio mixing. Light makeup they do themselves. They and Geoff have tons of videos to choose from. You can't go wrong with any. They are in Orlando Florida. All of them have performed at Disney World, Universal Studios or both. They do every genre you can think of. If they feel they can do it they will. They usually film at Pattycake Productions. Owned by Layne and former member Tony. They have all original videos that they wrote and did themselves with actors and actresses. All Disney related in some way. Voiceplay also has minis/shorts. These videos are usually 1½ minutes or less. All amazing. Several Halloween ones in them as well.

I’m glad you already knew Nightmare Before Christmas, because otherwise this vid isn’t normally a good first look at VoicePlay. I won’t suggest other songs from VP to look at next as the comments are full of those. In the movie, Oogie is alone with Santa when this song happens, but since all 5 guys should be shown in the video, Eli, Earl, and J.None are playing Lock, Shock, and Barrel, and Layne (the beatboxer) is playing Zero, Jack’s ghost dog. Yeah, I don’t think this is the best intro to Voiceplay because it’s not the norm for them BUT it’s a great one regardless. I’m sure others have already made recommendations but for Halloween they have 3 more from Nightmare Before Christmas - This is Halloween, What’s This and Kidnap the Sandy Claws. Others that are Halloweenish - Hide and Seek - Ding Dong featuring the stairwell siren, Lauren Paley Grim Grinning Ghosts Superstition In the Hall of the Mountain King Zombies vs Hillbillies (with Home Free) Geoff did Monster Mash and Headless Horseman on his channel But definitely check out some “regular” Voiceplay songs too - like Nothing Else Matters - they are all fantastic!! ❤

There is more. Things are traded off. I see that you have 557 (about that) recommendations for different songs of theirs, all of them are amazing. I didn't see Golden Hour, so I will recommend that as well. Anthony Garguila (gar-JOO-la) is the featured artist on that one, and had already become a Tik Tok sensation with it earlier. It is weird, creepy, sweet, and romantic. Just sayin'. They use whichever guy whose voice will match the song. I first saw Sixteen Tons by Geoff and that led me to Oogie Boogie's Song by VoicePlay. I've never looked back. Im addicted to VoicePlay and Geoff videos now! I suggest you watch Trapped next. Its kind of in a story form and they do a mashup (i think that's what its called) of Billie Eilish songs. They pack so much into that video i swear it took me about 50 times before i saw things that were happening in the background!

Possibly not the best introduction to VoicePlay as you say, it doesn't show their vices off as well as some others but it is a lot of fun and Geoff features heavily in it. VoicePlay are often described as the theatre kids of a capella and they do love doing more theatrical videos but they cover a wide range of genres, so whether your're into Disney, rock, or anything else, you'll find something they've done to listen to. The arrangemts are usually done by either Geoff or Layne, the beatboxer, though Eli the "little bald guy" has done some as well. Also they do almost everything themselves, though they do now get some help with steadycam operaters, thanks to the patrons who give them an income. As you mention it, Geoff is not normally the frontman f the group, often he is simply the bass guitar sound. Try Dream On, or Nothing Else Matters, for something more recent. or anything you fancy the sound of. Two of the group in this video have since left the group , and someone else has joined them, but you'll get that the more you see. Thank you for this, I enjoyed your reactions.

Geoff Castellucci is VoicePlay’s gateway drug. 😝 People come for Geoff’s bass, and then they find themselves hooked on Eli’s belting tenor, Cesar’s ability to bring on the feels and the amazing stuff that Layne can do. Ok metal head…look at their covers of Metallica’s Nothing Else Matters, Aerosmith’s Dream On, and White Stripes’ Seven Nation Army to hear them rock out. And no, Geoff isn’t the front man. They don’t have a front man. They trade that off. There was a beat boxer in this one but he’s so damn good that you thought it was and instrument. 😄

Fun fact: both Voice Play and PTX were on seasons of a show called The Sing-off. Iirc, PTX was the winner of a previous season and were on this season as mentors for an episode. This season also had Home Free as contestants. Also, i believe theres a battle between them in this season and at least one video of them singing together outside of the season (home free and voiceplay). Ok, going stop editing as i think of new things lol.

They have some different over the years in the Group like Jay None comes back and does some when can because went into the Navy but the other one in this song is Earl he left for personal reason but was one the older members They done lots different Music like some Disney Medley like Mona, Little Mermaid, Frozen. the also done We Don't Talk About Bruno. Everyone in the group besides Geoff was using a "character" voice in this song, so their actual singing voices are just as amazing as Geoff's - just in different ways. If you watch "This Is Halloween", you'll hear both their more normal singing voices at the beginning, and more character voices as the song progresses. VoicePlay is the oldest of the 3 big a cappella groups you'll most commonly see on KZbin (Home Free and Pentatonix being the other two). They originally started out as an all-male group in 1997 as 4:2:Five, and made the name change to VoicePlay in 2012. Geoff is one of the original members, along with Layne Stein (beatboxer/vocal percussion/weird noises/baritone). Eli (rhymes with jelly) Jacobsen (bald tenor) is the other member you'll see in almost every VP video, but the other members have changed over the years and you'll see various lineups depending on when a video is made. They are currently down to 4 permanent members, and have been using guest artists to fill back out to 5 for a few years now, often including female vocalists (Rachel Potter and Ashley Diane are two very popular ones, both excellent singers). Recommendations: The Dragonborn Comes (Skyrim), Nothing Else Matters (Metallica cover), My Mother Told Me and Valhalla Calling (both with Viking themes), Phantom of the Opera, Moana medley.

This one is not really representative of what they can do as it very much features one of the singers, but it still is a winner. That last note that he did was the first time he had used a subharmonic on a video. It’s not just how low he goes though. It is also the amazing range he has. Consider that just a few seconds ago he was belting out I’m the Oogie boogie man in a much higher register. To see the same group of people (they have had some changes) doing something completely different where you can actually hear their voices, try Tennessee Whiskey. It is gorgeous The gentleman playing Santa is Geoff’s brother-in-law but the voice was done by Eli, the tenor that was in red. Among other things he is a voice actor. They live in Orlando and most if not all have worked either at Disney and or Universal. They are definitely the theater kids of the group. There’s a saying that in high school PTX would’ve been the student council, VoicePlay would have been the theater nerds, and HomeFree would be out in the parking lot having a party. Come Halloween we will have lots of as Halloween is their favorite holiday. They try to do something spooky each year. They did three other songs from Tim Burton’s Nightmare before Christmas. They have also done the Stevie Wonder’s song Superstition, Grim Grinning Ghosts from Disney’s Haunted Mansion, I’ve Got Friends from the Other Side from Princess and the Frog, and Ding Dong/Hide and Seek. Although not specifically Halloween, they are trolls in their cover of In The Hall of the Mountain King. An older one that you might enjoy is Once upon a Dream from a Disney related album that they did. The guys are singing but there is a featured guest of Maleficent. She is extremely… threatening. Another one not specifically Halloween but sort of related is the incredibly funny sing off that they did with Home Free. If they had competed against one another on the program, they were going to do Survivor. They decided to do it anyway and film the video. You can find it in voice plays catalog under Survivor - Zombies versus Hillbillies. Guess which is which!! Geoff has has only had his channel for a few years and has done a Halloween offering each time. He has done the Headless Horseman from the 1958 Disney animated short on the Legend of Sleepy Hollow, the Monster Mash, and Ghost Riders in the Sky. In addition PattyCake Productions does something every year often related to the movie Hocus Pocus. It’s not an a cappella group -more musical theater. It is a production company co-owned by Layne, and Tony Wakim who was the baritone for about seven years. Some others that are Halloween related would be Bump in the Night which features cameos of about 30 horror film icons. One of my favorites is the Villains in the Haunted House. It features representations of the villains of many of the movies produced or owned by the Disney corporation set in a parlor of Disney’s Haunted House.
