Technically WayV -- the Mandarin Chinese sub-unit of NCT -- debuted in January 2019 with the Mandarin version of "Regular." (The Korean and English versions of "Regular" were originally released by NCT-127.) But "Take Off," which came out in April 2019, is considered WayV's official debut song because it was their first release that was all theirs. Currently, there are 6 members in WayV. However, in this MV there are 7 members: Ten is also a member of NCT-U and SuperM; Lucas, is a former member of NCT-U/WayV and is also part of SuperM; Winwin is also a member of NCT-U and NCT-127; Kun -- the leader of WayV -- originally debuted as part of NCT-2018; and Yanyang, Xiaojun and Hendery debuted specifically as members of WayV at the beginning of 2019 when WayV was formed. Because WayV -- which stands for We Are Your Vision in English -- or Weishen V in Chinese -- which means "gods of vision" -- is a sub-unit of NCT, NCT's whole dream concept is also part of WayV's storyline and concept. As with everything NCT does, it all has to do with dreams, dreaming or being in a dream state, etc. Some fans who are into SM group theories have also speculated that NCT's storyline also connects to EXO's and SuperM's storyline. Almost everything from SM Entertainment is connected to SM's Culture Universe, which is all part of a giant drama or movie. It's just another chapter in the story. Since the creation of SuperM, where they are now taking members from each of SM's most popular boy groups -- Baekhyun and Kai from EXO, Taemin from SHINee, Taeyong and Mark from NCT, Ten from WayV and Lucas, former member of WayV -- and creating an Avengers supergroup, I think that was SM's first indication that from now on we need to pay attention, because all of its groups' MVs are somehow connected. If the SuperM Avengers are coming together to help EXO stop the evil Red Force from EXO's storyline, I think the members who are part of SuperM are the liaisons who are helping to connect all the groups together. For example, right after SuperM released their debut "Jopping" MV, WayV came out with their "Moonwalk" MV, and I think "Moonwalk" is pretty much a continuation of "Jopping's" storyline, and now I think WayV's "Turn Back Time" and "Kick Back" are also part of that story. With NCT's dream concept, they could very easily connect to EXO's other world and other dimension theories. One thing that I find interesting about WayV's "Take Off" MV, is that if you watch "Take Off" with an eye for looking for connections and theories, an argument could be made that the storyline in "Take Off" may have been designed to connect WayV -- and more specifically, Ten and Lucas -- to "SuperM's storyline. "Take Off" came out even before we knew that SM was even considering creating SuperM, but with all that I know about how SM spends years working on creating stories and connecting storylines between MVs and between its groups, it wouldn't surprise me if SM may have been planning ways to draw connections between WayV and SuperM even when the concept for "Take Off" was created. If you notice, there are several "superhero-like" elements in the "Take Off" MV that are similar to SuperM's and EXO's storyline and they could potentially be connected. Not only because "Take Off" was WayV's debut song, do the lyrics talk about being ready to take off -- as in they are ready to be launched onto the scene and become superstars -- but I think it's also supposed to be interpreted like they are ready to launch into orbit and join in the fight to help EXO battle the Red Force. For instance, we see Xiaojun suspended in the air with wings a lot like Lucas in WayV's "Turn Back Time" MV and SuperM's "One (Monster & Infinity)" MV. And we also see a lot of WayV's storyline has an otherworldly, futuristic and digital theme, which could now be connected to aespa's storyline. aespa is NCT's sister group, so that usually means there are similarities between the groups and, when it comes to SM, it also means that their storylines are probably connected. I also think the drones you see in "Take Off" are connected to the drones we see in a lot of SM's other group MVs, such as SuperM's "Jopping" and "One (Monster & Infinity)" MVs and EXO Kai's solo debut "Mmmh" MV and his "Film: Kai" teaser video, and even WayV's "Moonwalk" MV, etc. It's all part of SM's SM Culture Universe storyline. "Take Off" is also another part of NCT's dream concept, so what you are seeing in the MV could be interpreted as different things to do with dreams and dreaming. Real things like the dream of wealth, the dream of fame, the dream of the perfect body (LOL), as well as things that only happen when you are literally dreaming, such as the wings and Ten's glowing eyes, etc. As you may know, the only reason why WayV doesn't have NCT in their name like the other NCT sub-units is because at the time of their debut there was a lot of political issues between Korea and China, and because of that Korean companies were not able to work in China. NCT's Chinese sub-unit has been going to debut for years, but with all the political issues it took SM a long time to find a way to work around all the rules the Chinese government put in place to prevent its native Chinese citizens from working with anyone associated with Korea and preventing anyone who was working with a Korean company from working in China. Therefore, in order to circumvent some of China's restrictions, SM found/created a Chinese company that was willing to take on NCT's Chinese sub-unit, but also allow SM to have a say in the group's concept and promotion activities. Part of how they get around the rules is they gave the group a name that distances them from their Korean roots. (That is also why WayV's Chinese fans are called WayZenNi instead of NCTzens and why WayV has their own lightstick design that is different than NCT's.) The company WayV is under is called Label V, which is part of SM, but separate from the Korean branch of the company and it produces songs in Mandarin to keep the Chinese government happy. All the members of WayV also speak Mandarin and have some connection to Chinese heritage, but most of the members are not native mainland Chinese citizens, so this gives them some immunity from the Chinese government. But they are representing China and they are promoting Chinese culture, so the Chinese government kind of turns a blind eye to the fact that they are technically still under a Korean company, as long as they hid any connection to their Korean company while doing promotions in China. As you can see, not only do the WayV members speak, Mandarin, Korean and English, but Ten is from Thailand so he speaks Thai; Lucas is from Hong Kong so he speaks Cantonese and a little Thai because his mom is Thai; Hendery also speaks Cantonese because he is from Macau China; and Yangyang is Taiwanese, but he grew up in Germany so he also speaks German. WayV is a very international group that speaks many languages. So, pretty much all of WayV's songs are in Mandarin with a few English lyrics and words mixed in. (Except when it's an English version, such as "Bad Alive" or their all-English version of "Love Talk," or their song "Miracle", or if you happen to pick the Korean version of a couple of their songs. etc.) LOL
