The Amish do avoid most technology, but these days there is no avoiding all of it. For example, the Amish business owners who make furniture or other things will use gasoline and machinery to help and also even have smart phones in order to help them do business. They still don't use it nonstop like the rest of us.
@ffjsb

Amish WILL use modern tech if they are employed by an "English" factory. Most "Amish" furniture is made in factories with modern tools and technology, but just using Amish employees. "Amish" built most often just means an Amish employee built it, not that they used hand tools to build the product...
@IggyStardust1967
@IggyStardust1967 2 жыл бұрын
@@ffjsb Still, there's a level of quality associated with "Amish Made". As I understand it, Amish people won't offer anything (or even allow something to be advertised with their "name" associated with it) if it's not of the highest quality. I've worked around Menanites as well as Amish people, and while you really need to stand down-wind of them, the work they do is absolutely top notch. If I needed to hire someone for any sort of construction work, they would be the first I'd call upon. Smell or no smell, their work ethic offsets that.

You have to watch the Coolio version of this song (thus the braids) and the sweating when he sings on the side. I died laughing because you have to know the original.....yeah now you should research the Amish. That's the Amish...they are allowed to leave at age 16, many end up pregnant, on drugs etc. The kids go crazy because they have never experienced alcohol etc and all the other fun stuff. But about 90% end up going back to their community in the end. You can see them on KZbin. Rumsprunge i think it's called. Peace from Canada.

My great grandma was born Amish. It's not that they are really against technology, because they still have to use it. They all have to use batteries for the lights on the horse and buggies. A lot have boomboxes that play music, which need batteries. Most Amish communities have one television and one telephone for emergency purposes. The television for the weather and a phone to call 911. They will even use it to order pizza. It is more based on a vote, at their city hall type meetings. If they agree to something then they will use it. And Amish people do fight and they usually win, but I think that is more grade school and high school. I don't think the adults do as much, but I have seen a lot of kids pick fights with Amish kids, and then watch them get their butts kicked. It's hard for a normal school kid to beat up a kid, that probably woke up at 4:30 in the morning doing farm chores. The Amish kids in school were not allowed to watch movies when we had movie day, but not because it was television, it's that they believe movies and shows are not good to watch. They would have to leave the classroom, but they didn't have to leave the classroom because the lights were on, or because the teacher used an overhead projector.

Amish people avoid technology and current affairs. Mormons (I am one) believe in living in the world but not being of the world. Meaning we live as most people do but we don't do what most people do if we see it as contrary to religious teachings. We don't drink, smoke, do any drugs unless prescribed and avoid anything that alters our state of mind or pollutes the body. We teach kindness and compassion. There is a lot more to it but it would take a very long time to explain.

I'm ex-Mormon. We are very different from Amish. Mormons have temples and missionaries and a prophet and we can't drink or smoke or have coffee. We used to have polygamy. There are a lot of very wealthy and powerful Mormons, and the Mormon church has billions of dollars in wealth. The Amish have almost no power. I don't even think they vote or pay taxes. They have no technology, as you see, and they are well known for craftsmanship. Both are high-demand religions that are difficult to leave, but the Amish is much harder to leave by any metric I can think of. Mormons don't even shun (at least not officially, but some families do it).

A large of a part of my family was raised either Mennonite or Amish, and after a certain period, they try to retain and live and believe by a custom of Lutheranism that was adopted after moving to the US. It is meant to be a simplified and simple life as based on the Bible as conceived about a century before they into the US and expect the community to live a simple and wholesome life without modern influences if possible. That being said, young men and women of an informational age can go on something called Rümspringer, which allows them to experience a more modern lifestyle through personal living. A lot go back home, but some do go to the “modern English world.” A few of my family did leave their communities, and my mom played them this to help them laugh and cope. I hope you find the same humour!

Amish people believe that the history stopped about 1700 (correct me if i am wrong). They are not allowed using things after that period of time. Head of the church decides what men can read in the bible. They are not allowed to read what he doesn't approve off. There is one special period, which count for boys and girls. The Rumspringe. In that period they can do as they please, aftwards deciding if they want to be baptist as amish, as most young people do.

Mormons are like Scientologists except they stuck with the Jesus thing. They seem more like a really sexist racist giant corporation than a religion - to me anyway. My dad is Mormon - I really dislike everything about that particular group. Amish are very averse to technology but they are ok I guess. Everyone has their issues. The have a thing called Rumspringer (not sure how to spell that - it’s probably Dutch) where the teens get to go be in the world for a bit and they decide if they want to come back or not. If they leave they cannot ever come back. The family will shun them and everyone who is still Amish.

Mormons and Amish are VERY different from one another. Mormons are famous mainly for their door-to-door missions, wherein a pair of guys in button-down shirts and ties show up and knock on your door and try to talk to you about their religion. Every new convert to their religion has to do this for a few months, which is a way of separating them from their friends and family so they end up relying heavily on the Mormon church for friends. Their religious doctrine, incidentally, is abnormally wacky, almost as bizarre as scientology. Jesus was a space alien and Satan is his brother and maybe some day you can get your own planet, and their main religious text was written on golden plates in a language that there's no other record of and translated into English by their founder using magic sunglasses, etc. Mormons originated in America and pretty much all speak English. It's easy to get them confused with the Jehovah's Witnesses (there are a lot of similarities, including a marked tendency toward gnostic practices), but the Mormons tend to be better educated than the JWs on average. Mormons interact regularly with the outside world, hold normal jobs, etc., and there have been a number of Mormons who were famous for things other than their religion, e.g., Orson Scott Card, a noted science fiction author. Oh, and several early influential Mormons practiced polygamy, and the Mormon church *officially* holds that there was nothing wrong with that. Theologically speaking, Mormons are a "cult" in the technical sense, i.e., they claim to be Christians but reject core tenets of the Christian faith, particularly the doctrine of the trinity (and so of course they claim that all other Christian denominations are apostate except for theirs, standard cult stuff). Again, this puts them in the same category as the JWs. Note that this usage of "cult" is *not* the same as the pop-media definition that involves stockpiling weapons and drinking grape Kool-Aid; the Mormons are not subversive or anti-government or suicidal or militant or any of that. They just want to change the definition of what "Christian" means. Amish are an ultra-conservative sect of the Mennonites. The Amish are particularly strict about not using modern technology (such as fabric dyes, tractors, and zippers), because they don't want to be "worldly". All Mennonites believe in not being "worldy", but the extent to which this means "no technology" varies quite a lot; the Amish are at the very strictest end of that spectrum. They mostly keep to themselves (to the point where a lot of them still speak Pennsylvania German among themselves and refer to all outsiders as "English") and don't really need to do missions because they grow their church by having lots of children; if they can convince even a third of their children to grow up and be Amish, their church grows. (I don't know how the Amish feel about birth control in principle, but in practice they don't seem to use it much, perhaps because several of the most popular and reliable methods of birth control are based on modern technology.) Like all Mennonites, the Amish are Anabaptists, which has several implications (strong belief in separation of church and state, unwillingness to fight or support the military, and rejection of infant baptism because they reserve baptism for professing believers only, are probably the three most important Anabaptist traits to know about.) The Mennonites (and various similar groups) came over from Europe (because the Catholics and Protestants in Europe were pretty much having a two-hundred-year-long competition to see who could kill the most Anabaptists) and settled in the Philadelphia area, then gradually moved westward as the coast became too crowded for their tastes. The most common profession for Amish is farmer, but they also have blacksmiths, carpenters, lumberjacks, and various other trades that you can do without modern technology. They're hard workers, and their stuff (e.g., furniture) is often very good quality, but their avoidance of modern technology limits them in some areas (e.g., they don't have much of an internet presence, for obvious reasons). Theologically speaking, the Amish are "legalists", meaning the emphasis of their teaching is so much on picky details of how to behave, that they end up losing sight of what is really important. Legalism is sort of like pietism ("practice what you preach") cranked up to eleven and then multiplied by a thousand. There are a lot of little legal grandfather clauses and loopholes that allow Anabaptists in general, including the Amish, to avoid breaking the law but also avoid violating their conscience. For example, there's a tax form they can fill out that says "I'm a pacifist, don't use any of my tax money to fund the military", and the US federal government promises to use their tax money for something else. (This has no impact on the budget, because the IRS just shuffles things around on paper so that someone *else's* money is going to the military instead. But these kinds of loopholes get the government out of throwing a lot of Anabaptists in prison for the crime of having an over-active conscience. There's no benefit to society to be had by putting these people in prison; they're acting on a religious conviction and will not recant no matter what the legal consequences are.) Full Disclosure: I am an Anabaptist (but not a Mennonite; specifically I am of the Schwarzenau Brethren; as you can probably tell from the fact that I'm saying this on the internet, we don't especially mind using technology, but our theological background is similar to that of the Mennonites in certain other ways).

Your overall concept of The Church of Jesus Christ of latter-day Saints (LDS) is very disturbing and not at all accurate in any sense. I think you should do a little actual research from the source itself and not from any anti-LDS website or individual. LDS people believe in God the Father, and in His Son Jesus Christ, and in the Holy Ghost. They have been taught that the Trinity are one in purpose but also 3 distinct eternal beings. I'd go on about more, but I didn't come here to preach or teach the Church's doctrine. I just wanted to clarify that you are astronomically uninformed about any real facts about the what the Church is and what it believes.

As an ex amish person I would say the chances of you being allowed to live with amish family for a week who will allowed you to record them are slim but not impossible. Most of comments about Amish using technology is true.

I would compare the Amish with the Mennonites. Traditional believers always wear plain clothing without buttons. Women always cover their hair. Grew up in a Mennonite area. They can marry between the sects. Mormons are the ones who used to have multiple wives. They wear regular clothes and live modern. I had LDS (Latter Day Saint) friends growing up.

Members of the Church of Jesus Christ Latter-Day Saints(not actually called Mormons) are Christians and mainly what sets them apart from most Christians are things like the word of wisdom(a belief that things like alcohol, coffee, tea, etc should be avoided), the belief that God the Father, Jesus Christ, and the Holy Ghost are three separate beings, the belief that families are eternal, God continues to speak through prophets today, etc. Overall a member of the church lives like anyone else and tried to be a good member of the community. "In the world but not of the world." Basically the belief is to try to remain unstained by the bad things in the world but that to make a difference and help others one needs to be involved with society. That is how members try to live.

All different levels or secs of amish. Some have cars and electronics but are restricted from many things on the internet . Others dont use any electric, and others have electric but its solar and batteries. Oh some amish dont want to be on camera and others don't care. The barn scene was done in 1 take and that was a real giant frame they dropped and that was him standing there the entire time.

It's already been said both in comments and the video but yeah. Amish in specific are the ones who generally avoid technology. I'm originally from PA and lived about an hour out from Lancaster (shown in the video). It's one of the biggest Amish populations throughout the country as far as I know. You go there and see all sorts of horse and buggies and stuff. It's actually really cool to see imo

You're confusing Mennonites with Mormons. I grew up near Lancaster, Pa. which is known for their Amish. In a nutshell, Amish don't have electricity or cars. They travel by a horse pulled buggy and plow their fields using horse powered plows. Menonites have electricity & cars but their cars are usually black.

Do Amish Mennonites use technology? Yet, contrary to popular belief, the Amish don't reject all modern technology and aren't entirely against it. While guidelines around the use of tech vary between their communities, in many of them, you'll find Amish folks using electricity, telephones, and even a kind of computer. Also my grandfather came from Dutch Pennsyvania Lancaster he's not Amish he is Methodist but he did go too school with Amish children during 40s.
